**The Runway App: A Simple Masking Tool**
One of the things you can do with the free version of The Runway App is export 720p videos. However, this results in slightly fuzzy edges on your mask. To get around this, I'll be using a video editing software called DaVinci Resolve to create a more precise masking effect.
To start, I'll import my video and mask into DaVinci Resolve. Since the app doesn't have a traditional masking tool, I'll use Fusion to achieve the same result. I'll right-click and select "New Fusion Clip," then jump into the fusion tab.
Next, I'll drag my mask into the nodes section of the clip and click on the button in the top-right corner to view it in multiple views. Unfortunately, the global in/out setting is very slim, so I'll drag it out to get the whole range of the mask.
Now that I have my mask in the correct position, I'll connect it to the alpha channel of my media one clip. However, the mask video exported from The Runway App is at 720p, which is much smaller than my source video's resolution of 1080. To fix this, I'll add a resize node and adjust the settings to match the original video's size.
With my mask now correctly resized, I can drag my main video into the second layer of the timeline. Next, I'll bring my original clip back down to create a new layer on top. This will give me a standard picture with an alpha-channelled out mask.
To complete the effect, I'll add a text node and move it between the layers. Since The Runway App has a simple animation system, I can zoom in and out of the text to achieve a more dynamic look.
Overall, using The Runway App's masking feature requires some creative problem-solving, but the end result is well worth the effort. By using Fusion and DaVinci Resolve, I've been able to create a precise mask that enhances my video without losing any of its original charm.
WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthe first thing you're going to want to do is jump over to the runway app it's free for lower quality exports but that's really all you need if you're trying to sort of remove the background so I'll log in here and basically you can start a new project up here in the top right corner do a video composition and I'm going to go ahead and upload a sample video okay there we go now all you have to do is simply drag it down into the timeline and on the far right side over here you're going to want to click green screen now what their tool allows you to do is basically set keyframes on your timeline for the different things that you want to keep and the different things that you want to remove so let's start out by clicking an area that I want to keep so let's start with my face you can see that it pretty much already masked me out of the screen but I want a little bit more stuff if so the power of this is that I can go ahead and keep clicking include so let me start clicking some of these things and you can see it's starting to pick up more and more of the scene and this is a pretty complex scene you can see all the different things that I'm having to click to make sure that it's kind of capturing okay so that looks pretty good some of these areas are green down here that we don't want to keep we want to mask those out so you can come over here to the top right side and click exclude and allows you to choose exclusion points so I'm going to get rid of this bowl over here and you can see it kind of pulled out part of my hand here so let me go back to the include and click include for my hand and there we go and I think that looks pretty good now if I hit preview now in this particular scene you can see that it hasn't really captured this bag and I want to make sure that everything down here is captured so one of the powerful things I can do is I can go to a specific spot in the video and I can start to add keyframes in where I want it to make sure to focus on keeping or excluding in this particular case I'm going to make sure I've clicked include up here and I'm going to add these couple little portions in right here okay that looks pretty good hit preview okay I'm pretty happy with that so now hit done masking and when you come back out to the main screen you'll see down here in the timeline that it's basically removed the background from this scene so what I'll do first is go ahead down to the effects and the filters and I'm going to choose fill color and I'm going to make this white so in this particular case I'm pretty happy with this if I wanted to make the background green I could I could have kept me here and actually had to chroma key this out but what we're going to do in DaVinci Resolve is actually use this video as a mask to add transparency to One Clip layer so once you're done here I'll hit play and it's done a pretty good job of cutting me out again you can go through each one of these areas back into the green screen click this go back into the green screen area right here and add keyframes all along your timeline if you wanted to but for the demo purposes here I think we're good so I'm going to go up here to export the only thing you can do with the free version is export 720p but that's just perfectly fine for a mask it just makes the edges a little fuzzy so I'll export video and the export is submitted and it'll basically go through and Export this for you so you can download it so I'll go ahead and jump forward to when it's done okay so now that it's exported click on the file itself come over here download so now once it's downloaded I'll jump into DaVinci Resolve now we're in DaVinci Resolve I've basically got just a test project up here with the two assets you can see I have my video here and then I have the mask video that I downloaded so I'm going to drag my normal video into the timeline and I'm in this particular case gonna there's a couple ways to do this so I'm going to use Fusion so I'm going to right Mouse click and say new Fusion clip and I'm going to jump into the fusion tab now a lot of people don't like Fusion but this is extra simple so you're going to want to go ahead and drag your mask into the nodes section here and on your media 2 which is your mask it's super important right away to go ahead and click this little button right here which shows it in the multiple views and if you don't have the multiple views this little button over here the viewer button allows you to switch between a single and a multiple view and you'll notice there's nothing showing up when I click that that's because for some reason when you bring a mask in there the global in out setting in the top right over here is very slim so in this particular case I'm going to go ahead and drag it out so I get the whole range and now you can see my mask okay so now with the mask in the nodes area I'm going to go ahead and simply drag it over and connect it to the alpha channel of my media one now you're going to notice it's not really showing up correctly there's a couple steps we need to take first thing we need to do is on Media One you need to go up to the settings area and you're going to want to choose the luminance Channel instead of alpha typically you're bringing an alpha channel in here and using that to mask things out but in this particular case we're using luminance because it's just black and white and some gray on the edges so once I choose luminance you'll see okay I'm starting to see a little bit of the shape that I want but it's not quite right because the mask video that we exported is at 720p so it's much smaller than the 1080 which is what my source video is at so click on your mask node and hit shift space and type in resize and put in a resize node so now what I can do is jump back over to the edit tab that now that that's all set up and you can see now I have a cutout video so what I'm going to go ahead and do is drag my main video up to the second video layer and I'm going to bring my original clip back down and you can see now I have basically my standard picture back but I have two layers I have the top layer which is Alpha channeled out and I have the bottom layer that I'm going to use as my background so let's go ahead and move this up one more layer and I'm simply going to bring a text node in and toss it between the layers let's leave it as basic title bring up the size drag it out and there you go so if I go ahead on this text layer and I zoom it in and out zooming in and out it really is simple once you've done it and like I said you can put anything behind yourself if you want to animate this going back and forth while you're talking you can zoom in and out so that's it it's the runway app put something behind you I could have put a green screen behind me but in this particular case I just wanted to keep it simple for this tutorial toss something down in the comments because I'd like to chat about this if you have another idea this has been Carl from technical goodies and I'm outthe first thing you're going to want to do is jump over to the runway app
