Hannah Liu, Strategy Director of Fossil Wearables with Kate Spade - Live Interview at CES 2018

**The Evolution of Wearables: A Conversation with Han Kao**

As we sat down to talk with Han Kao, CEO of Fossil Group, it was clear that he was excited about the latest developments in wearable technology. The company has been making waves in the industry with its new hybrid smartwatches, and Kao was eager to share his thoughts on what's driving this shift towards more functional and stylish timepieces.

For Kao, one of the key factors behind the success of Fossil Group's wearables is the ticking effect that many people experience when they sleep. "We know that our hybrid smartwatches have a silent feature that doesn't tick," he explained. "This was particularly appealing to consumers who wanted to be able to track their sleep without disturbing their partner or feeling like they were being monitored." With this in mind, Kao emphasized the importance of creating products that are not only stylish and functional but also considerate of our daily lives.

One of the standout features of Fossil Group's new smartwatches is their sleek design. "We've always believed in simplicity," Kao said. "Our watches should be beautiful and easy to use, with a focus on telling the time and providing basic notifications." This approach has been a key differentiator for the company, as many consumers are turned off by feature-packed wearables that feel too complicated or overwhelming.

When it comes to women's wearables, Kao acknowledged that the industry has sometimes fallen into clichés. "We've seen a lot of brands trying to appeal to women with gemstones and pink models," he said. "But we believe that there's more to it than just aesthetics." Instead, Fossil Group has focused on creating products that are both stylish and functional, with a focus on empowering consumers to take control of their own lives.

For Kao, one of the most exciting aspects of this expansion is the growing demand for wearable technology from consumers around the world. "We've seen incredible growth in recent years," he said. "From doubling our points of distribution to expanding into new markets and retailers, it's been a wild ride." With this growth comes the opportunity to create products that truly meet the needs of consumers.

**Availability and Pricing**

So when can we expect to get our hands on Fossil Group's new smartwatches? According to Kao, they're already available for presale on the company's website, with in-store and online releases planned for February. The Kate Spade smartwatch starts at $295, with a bracelet option that goes up to $390.

**What's Next for Fossil Group**

As we wrap up our conversation with Han Kao, it's clear that Fossil Group is just getting started. With its commitment to simplicity, style, and functionality, the company is poised to make a major impact in the wearable technology industry. And with new products on the horizon, fans of the brand can look forward to even more exciting developments in the world of wearables.

**The Future of Wearables**

As we look to the future, it's clear that the wearable technology market is going to continue to evolve and grow. With new innovations and advancements on the horizon, consumers will have even more options than ever before when it comes to choosing the perfect timepiece. Whether you're looking for a stylish and functional smartwatch or simply a reliable way to tell the time, there's never been a better time to explore the world of wearables.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwelcome back you are watching CES 2018 coverage right here on digital trends day 3 with all the tech talk happening a lot going on please don't miss a thing digital trends come forward such CES so you can find all the information there is so much going on I believe that's around 4000 people with information and updates with going on in the tech world which is so exciting thank goodness I've got help from Digital Trends with what's going on today Julian Jakarta joining me at the table again hey Julian hey how you doing good day 3 I tell you what there is a lot happening almost over and we are going into wearables which is what I'm excited about and to join us for the very first time at the table hi Andy box all right then senior writer for Digital Trends I'm very excited to talk about wearables as well but how has your CES been it's been exciting and exhausting and as usual absolutely fantastic I love Sirius right so let's get talking to wearables right now Connelly the strategy strategy director sorry for fossil wearables I want to know what is CES launched for you this year what have you been going on with the with the wearables well we've had a lot of exciting news this year for CES so probably most notable that I actually have here in front of me are our Kate Spade scalloped touchscreen smartwatches so they're very feminine and skate potatoes done a great job it's a it's a global brand one that's always had digital very native to the brand so they've done things such as you know phone cases watch straps for Apple watch they've done hybrid smartwatches with us which was great and very successful and you know they've done very amazing things with their watch as well so it's truly feminine details on the hardware so you can see everything from the scalloped top ring to details such as the iconic Kate Spade on the actual crown but what's great about is they've actually thought about how do I differentiate my product experiences for my consumers and so they've had very whimsical detailed dials such as a winking face and a hailing a taxi cab in New York City but one of the most exciting features that we really love about this watch was the ability to actually choose your own look so you know what we actually are finding are a lot of consumers love changing the dials constantly to just match their outfits and so for cakes me they decided to make it easier so they actually designed something called choose your look so if you actually go and go in to choose your look you can actually say okay do I want an outfit for the nighttime or the daytime so I'll actually say it's gonna be nighttime pretty soon here and in Vegas I can say what color is my jewelry it's gold I can say what color is my handbag it's pink and it's a great color wheel that actually allows you to do every type of color Under the Sun that you would actually want so let's just say my handbag is pink and my dress is blue and you just press the Spade here and it'll automatically generate a watch faces that'll match your style for that day so what's great is actually I could say oh that's a really cute dial I like it but I also want to see what else is next so it automatically generate be an algorithm what's the most important information that I want to see and want to generate on my watch face and then it'll actually show up and match perfectly with my outfit for the day what is it like obviously with the with the demographic here which really switching things up with tech because what women want are with their wearables is a little bit different to what men want what are the things that women are more attracted to when it comes to wearable technology in their phone yeah that's a really good question I think one of the biggest unlocks that we actually had respect to women consumers was actually just getting the design right so one of the biggest things is finally making a touchscreen SmartWatch that was thin enough small enough to fit on on your wrist and so typically females have smaller wrists and so that's actually been great I think the other thing is also getting products that are from global brands that they know and love and they've always been used to engaging with and want to hear from so that's been the biggest unlock for us and the differences between female and male consumers I'd say in terms of features and functionality one of the biggest things too is also just like the level of connectivity so always just making sure that you know they're always on the go they want things that simplify and help them to stay connected so one of the biggest things is actually just making sure they're not missing any notifications or anything that's important on their on-the-go lifestyle what was important to us because we gave this particular watch our best wearable of CES we really yeah really light really liked it and what a what we liked about it as men it was something that was actually said to us by Mary Beach who is a Kate Spade person and she said it was a break away from the traditional pinky and shrinky approach to women's wearable and who wants that anymore surely it's not the way forward and it's certainly the case for men we don't always want this big bulky watch and it was great to see a female attractive brand do Saeng a little different with with the watch itself you pointed out with the scallops and with the plate spade and I also really liked on the I don't know whether the cam will ever pick that up but on the clasp it says Kate Spade New York I think it's such a nice little detail it's really great to see a watch brand making a wearable watch one that people want to wear it's been a trend that's growing and we're pleased to see it on wearables for women so it's almost jewelry first and tech second it's always been it's always been for us at fossil group fashion first in tech second and that was actually just a very conscious decision that we made so a few years ago before we got into the wearable space we noticed that you know there was an opportunity here where everyone wants to put tech first and features and function which is absolutely great and very important but we actually saw this part of the market that wasn't currently being served especially with our consumers we're you know wearable is actually a very personal item to them it's you know wrist goes with you everywhere you are and you want it to match your outfit you want it to reflect your individualistic style and so that's actually what we exactly what we decided to do and so in addition to Kate Spade we're also launching our Skagen touchscreen smartwatches and I actually don't know if you guys are familiar with the Scoggin brand as well I am but I'm not sure whether everybody knows that the Skagen brand and the case Bay brand and various others are all under the fossil group so fossil group I think that's it's just been a very great company in terms of a portfolio very strong and kind of the world's best global brands and so we've actually had a number of different brands that we've added connectivity to within the wearables so Scoggin is no different so Scoggin is under the fossil group umbrella as well and it's just a great Danish very strong Danish Heritage brand and it's all about minimalism and simplistic lifestyle where everything is very intentional everything in the design so actually as you have it here everything is streamlined the lugs are actually perfectly formed so it lays very flat on your wrist and then they've thought about their digital dials to be how do we actually give you all the information that's very important but in a clean streamlined way so it's not cumbersome and so they've also designed the digital dials to optimize for battery and power real power life as well sorry oh no I'm actually more of a fan of this one if it's waterproof it looks very well water-resistant it looks like it's very versatile I mean somebody in the chat because we are live and everyone from around the world is tuning in for this one we've got janae McCarty saying love the Kate Spade smartwatches can you actually change out the wristbands and I wanted to extend that out to all the other watches how interchangeable are these features I know that in the tech you can yes the jewellery side is it the same as well yes it's actually the same so a lot of the watches actually come with interchangeable watch straps so exactly if you want the gold with a gold bracelet or you want it with this black leather strap even if it's something really fun and one's the goal like a you know metallic bracelet you can actually do that as well and it's very easy to actually interchange just with these pogo pins here yeah how do you think I was just gonna say this is what we love about fossil it's an actual fashion and watch brand getting involved with technology and that's where wearables were failing for so long is because it was tech brands making wearables and fashion and they didn't really understand it this is why we love this it's an understanding of what we want to wear yeah and it's also not just smartwatches with screens right you guys are also doing a huge push I think you're there was a something last year that someone said that fossil is gonna be trying to make all their watches into hybrid watches right yeah so I think that you know with us we've actually launched hybrid smartwatches which I love that you're actually wearing with Asik you commuter which is one of our best-selling styles so I think you know we are launching hybrid smartwatches which has been a great category for us which it looks exactly like a traditional watch but it actually has connectivity in it so it does notifications activity tracking sleep tracking a number of different features and you never you don't have to charge it which is even even better for a lot of our consumers how how do you know whether there's even daughter in there it looks like just a normal watch it's a bit complicated because you sort of have to set you know say if I want my facebook notifications to go at the one o'clock time and it's a bit of a memorization so you have to like you know learn what you're setting things to but that it'll like if I get a facebook notification right now it'll swing over to the one for a few seconds and then swing back so by the time I look at it oh right Facebook and I'm like I don't want to interact with Facebook right now then maybe I don't look at my phone that's secret even well it is it's extremely discreet and it was one of the biggest pieces of feedback - we got from consumers so there's different consumer segments so there's ones that absolutely love the touchscreen love getting full notifications and then those are others who really like the discreet and secretive nature of it and the fact that you can filter it so for example sometimes I might not care about everyone that calls me or text me but I really do care about my family and my friends and so my husband's number one my sisters are all number two my mom's number three and so anytime they're actually contacting me you know nobody knows in the meeting other than myself when I look at it and I say oh okay my husband is called so it's actually been a great thing for us in terms of the category you've probably saw a lot happening with fossil granite brand and the marketing with Kristen Bell and and others and it's been really powerful and great and I do think that in the future we are thinking about how do we add every piece of connectivity to every watch that we make some day we talk about some of those software involved here and you connected with iOS visitor adren Android function and what are some of the things that I can use in my day-to-day yeah absolutely so that's actually a really big decision that we made for hybrid smartwatches but even for partnering with Google on in the Android wear platform we wanted it to work with all of our consumers devices and that's iOS and Android and so we you know everything is perfectly compatible with that into the functionality and features you know what I think a lot of our users actually really love is the ability to stay connected with notifications track their activity in some of our models we have tracking heart rate within like fossil and misfit brands and so that those are ones that actually people really love kind of in their day to day lives we're talking off-camera about the ticking effect and I know that this is a tech watch but even with the hybrid brand I never take a watch off when I put it on and I noticed that you were talking that we sleep and a lot of the time I would hear the ticking when I was going to sleep and it was very infuriating what is it is it a silent watches can you set like those settings and does it have a sleek capability as well yeah it ties so our hybrid smartwatches have sleep tracking as well and the great news is they do not tick so you know you can actually sleep with them you know and you don't have to take them off and you can actually get um you know great information about your sleep so how long you slept what are the different sleep cycles how restful were you in those different sleep cycles so it's great information to be able to have kind of at night as well as during the day and I want to know your interest in this as well like what do you look for in wearables and what is it like as a man what do you think of the women's watches what appeals to you if you were to buy one for a significant other I like that they've got so much slimmer and first generation watches for men were extremely thick and they didn't make women's wearables at all because they were massive and what attracts ask to them is simplicity of use and not being feature packed personally I don't like smart watches that have got too many features because you don't use them you want to tell the time you're on notifications to be tracking ideally and a long battery life which is why it hybrid watches appeal so yeah it's those it's the simplicity of you so what should be beautiful and it should tell you the time and a few other things nothing too much okay yeah and and you know last year and a couple years ago there there were female centric smartwatches but a lot of the tech brands that go try to do that they they go little let's say cliche and overboard with gemstones only pink models and all these little things that they think women like but perhaps the vast majority of women don't really want something like that and sort of last year which is why I was you know excited because there was this huge push from fashion brands and of course there's so many under fossil group that they're just launching all these watches and a lot of them are for women and you know they don't look Arden my you know abruptness but it doesn't look Taurus yeah fair enough that's a really good point I'm Blake Neil in the comments as well this is actually really freaking cool usually smartwatches stick out like a sore thumb so the subtle nature oh this is great i am i suffer from incredibly tiny wrists so i was wondering if i could actually test you out watching and just see how it looks like on this itty bitty breakable bad boy that I call my arm thank you so much yes thank you I do want to talk about availability and prices because that's obviously a huge point of discussion at CES what are we looking at here and when can we get a wrists on them so the Kate Spade smartwatches are actually on presale right now on their website so they're going to going in stores and online a little bit broader on in February and so that one actually there starts at 295 and for the bracelet option goes up to 390 or 325 it is affordable no upcoming events yeah that's a lot which is great this actually feels beautiful that's leather is it yes it's leather a very solid wrist wrap thank you so much for talking to us about this product I think people do want to learn more about fossil because obviously this expansion is so big where can people find out about the new technology yeah absolutely well you know fossil group actually in the past 2017 we've had a lot of different things happen in this last year one of which is actually we doubled our points of distribution we just seen so much demand from consumers for our products for our connected products so that's great so in any location you're able to find us at you know fossil brand stores and in major retailers everywhere such as you know Target Best Buy et cetera and then also online you know we've got great presence on fossil group that you can go on and as well as looking at all of our different brands where people can go and learn more thank you so much Han I really do appreciate you I'm out of a very busy CEOs schedule to talk to us about fossils wearables and in the comments everyone so so proud of me for actually being able to give you back the watch after my careers you alright that was really really difficult to do stick around though we're gonna do a mobile recap of all the mobile content that we saw this year at CESwelcome back you are watching CES 2018 coverage right here on digital trends day 3 with all the tech talk happening a lot going on please don't miss a thing digital trends come forward such CES so from consumers for our products for our connected products so that's great so in any location you're able to find us at you know fossil brand stores and in major retailers everywhere such as you know Target Best Buy et cetera and then also online you know we've got great presence on fossil group that you can go on and as well as looking at all of our different brands where people can go and learn more thank you so much Han I really do appreciate you I'm out of a very busy CEOs schedule to talk to us about fossils wearables and in the comments everyone so so proud of me for actually being able to give you back the watch after my careers you alright that was really really difficult to do stick around though we're gonna do a mobile recap of all the mobile content that we saw this year at
