The Used Graphics Card Market Kinda Sucks

The State of the Used GPU Market: A Mixed Bag

One of the most significant changes we've observed in the used market is the presence of mining variants, particularly among some RX cards. These mining versions are not inherently bad, but they can make it challenging to determine whether a card has been mined or not. Before purchasing one of these cards, it's essential to ask the seller if you can flash it back to its gaming BIOS. This process is crucial to ensure that the card functions optimally and meets your performance expectations.

Another aspect worth noting is the proliferation of GPU prices in the used market. While some high-end cards are still reasonably priced, others have skyrocketed in value due to their mining potential. A few RX 580 and RX 570 models can be found for around $100, but prices may be higher than they were a year or two ago. This increase is largely driven by the fact that many of these cards are now being sold without their mining BIOS, making them more appealing to buyers who want the full range of features and performance capabilities.

In contrast, lower-end GPUs like the GTX 1070 and 1080 are still relatively competitive in the used market. These cards can be found for around $200-$300, which is a significant discount compared to their original retail price. The GTX 1660 Super, in particular, has proven itself to be an excellent value proposition, offering performance similar to the GTX 1070 at a lower price point.

The used market's competitiveness is also affected by the sheer number of listings available. Historically, eBay and other online marketplaces have hosted numerous GPU listings, providing buyers with a range of options to choose from. However, in recent times, many of these listings seem to be either duplicates or new, brand-new cards being sold without any apparent attempt to undercut prices.

The reason for this decline in inventory is partly due to the current buyer's market demand for GPUs. As more and more people look to upgrade their gaming rigs, the demand for used GPUs has increased, driving up prices and reducing the number of available listings. Additionally, many sellers are choosing not to list their used GPUs on these platforms, instead opting for Amazon or other online marketplaces that offer a more streamlined buying experience.

Ultimately, the used GPU market is still worth exploring, particularly for buyers who want to squeeze out every last bit of performance from their budget. However, it's essential to be aware of the potential pitfalls and nuances involved in purchasing used hardware. By doing your research, setting realistic expectations, and being prepared to negotiate, you can find a great deal on a high-quality GPU that meets your needs without breaking the bank.

The author notes that, while the current market conditions are challenging, they hope that the situation will improve in the near future. With more inventory becoming available and prices stabilizing, the used GPU market may once again become a viable option for buyers looking to upgrade their gaming rigs or supplement their budgets with a high-performance card.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enall right I know the camera angle is a bit weird you'll get used to it for this video in particular wanted to and I have just scroll through eBay see if we can find any decent graphics card deals and I'm sure that if they exist when this video is made in this video err shortly after I make this video those deals will vanish fairly quick as well so I'm gonna do my best to link some of these ads in the video description or check those out they might have already expired I might also list some general search listings as well to get you started but look things in the new market in terms of graphics card it's not looking too pretty right now some things are just totally out of stock other things are just marked like way up into outer space you know five six hundred percent markups from some of these third-party companies that are selling on eBay and new AG and Amazon it's just ridiculous so we're gonna try to find some sweet used and graphics card deals stay with me if you're sick of seeing that same activate Windows watermark over and over snag an OEM license from SC D key you'll have a fully activated OS in seconds and you can kiss that watermark goodbye and be sure to use many offer code GSL for that suite discount well the first things I like to do when I scram through eBay is typing the simple phrase graphics card just to get an idea of how prices are trending currently this is actually a new graphics card this is a raid on art 57 XT from gigabyte for 369 bucks sold from new egg brand new this is a really good price here about 10% off you usually get these for around 400 bucks but I think this is yeah this is the gaming OC card so this is pretty much top-of-the-line from gigabyte I could go horas but this is a really great gigabyte card I think I have this exact model and it does indeed run very quiet so I'm pretty pretty good start there new card didn't expect that on eBay now you will see throughout this video several listings for our x4 70s and five 70s 5 80s 4 gig and 8 gig variants a lot of this has to do with the mining craze simmering down people are trying to offload that inventory they were mining with these cards for sure you can see this one in particular has that DVID port only and that'll tell you right away this was in fact a mining skew I just realized the way I'm cropping this yeah the DVID ports they can weigh over on this side of the screen but anyway this is not a bad thing per se if you're willing to get around the fact that only as DVID could make for a great intro gaming card I've actually used this exact skew as well for a bucks I'd say that's a bit steep look for around $60 especially for only a four gig for 70 variant and one of my favorite use graphics cards in the market has been for a very long time the GTX 1080 also the GTX 10-7 you can lump in they're both cards are excellent for the price if you can find them for the right price usually around 300 bucks maybe a bit less for GTX 1080 at this point you can see we've only got a couple in them and they're gonna be the zotac the the mini cards it's gonna run a bit hotter a bit louder just to the consequence of being smaller not gonna be able to cool these cards as efficiently but they are great in small cases and confined spaces and the EVGA one is one that is a surefire a6 3.0 card yeah this one here is a really good card I have several of these actually used to I have given a couple of away but for 300 bucks this is pretty good what I would try to do is find one that has like an OB O button next to it maybe submit an offer of to 60 to 70 if they haven't gotten a bite in a few days or weeks they might take you up on that also have to remember shipping is sometimes not included with these listings so you might end up paying another 20 or 30 bucks on top of whatever the list price is just to get the card to show up at your door scrolling down a bit further though where things are a bit more competitive it seems like prices for GTX 280s have not fully recovered to the point where I feel comfortable totally recommending these in the use market yes there are a few $300 listings that I do think are worth your consideration but I would not for example like this arrow 8 gig blower card like I wouldn't pay 250 bucks for this there's just not no chance the founders Edition card maybe but then again it's still a blower design it's gonna run a bit louder and typically won't boost as high as some of the AIB models so not one I would recommend for 350 either now one of the best gtx 280 SKUs it's gonna be the asus strix rog car this one's being sold for 350 bucks and you see have to pay another $17.25 as well but we've got an OB omake offer button this is good I'd like to see this maybe pitch them the 320 I'd say 300 you probably say no to just because again this is one of the best AIB variants of the 1080 but around 300 to 320 I would say is a good starting point from there he might counter to 330 now but if you're looking for one of the best GTX 10 eighties around I'd say the Strix is it now GTX 70s were some of the best cards in my opinion from a value perspective on the used market at around 200 bucks now that has slightly changed as of late these cards have as well gone up in price by about 40 to 50 bucks on the used market on average I'd say that the average ask is around 230 240 bucks this is a super clock variant I used to get these for 200 bucks maybe 180 all day this one's being sold for 245 not sure if that car it's gonna be on the market for very long but it is one of the I would say more prevalent gtx 1070 variants and these usually go for about 200 bucks so I wouldn't pay 245 for this maybe something closer to 220 if you're desperate you've got a couple blower cards here for around to 15 to me those are not worth it if you're gonna pay 250 for an asus strix 1070 I say pay an extra 50 bucks on top of that get yourself a bare-bones GT X 1080 I think you will definitely see a difference there not so much from say a regular super clock 1070 from EVGA and Astrix 1070 now while we're on the subject a 92 TI a comparable card to attend 70 though will consume a bit more power typically run a bit hotter these cards also have sold in the past for around 200 bucks they don't appear to have gone up in price as much as in the 10 70s which makes sense again this is an older architecture and the drivers probably haven't favored this card as much as they have the 1070 as of late but around 200 bucks especially for one that's as beefy as as otech and I need the TI on extreme I have one of these cards as well they run very quiet and well though I do notice there's no box here I like to buy a graphic arts with boxes usually help the resale value but this isn't too bad a starting price you could just buy outright for 200 bucks but I imagine if the bids ended at around 180 probably need his reserve now I want to check cards that are a bit beefier let's do our TX 2080 see if we can find any used our TX 2080s that's just the housing for a Tony 8/8 guy wants 250 bucks for it holy Sh this here is a gigabyte geforce r-tx 2080 gaming OC 8 gig for 600 bucks this does appear to be used as well and I'd say for $600 it's not a terrible deal but it's nothing to be super excited about people know that these are still fresh on the market there's nothing better than this in terms of Architecture from Nvidia so they're not gonna mark these down very far also the Arctic's 2080 with respect to Pascal is as good as the best from Pascal right so we're talking ten atti artix 20 they're in that same category although I'm sure many people would prefer the r-tx 2080 everything else equal if the prices were equal but this it's not terrible but I'd say if you're willing to spend 600 bucks on a Huston one you might as well spend an extra 50 to 100 bucks and get yourself a brand new one with a fresh warranty you get the box and everything else included as well now I did mention 1080 Ti so I think it's fair that we check those out as well you can see these are going for around 400 to 450 I'd say a really good price on a 1080i is about $400 that's a good hundred-dollar stepping stone from a GTX 1080 which again is another hundred-dollar stepping stone from a gtx 1070 so they scale actually quite nicely on the used market and the one we're talking about pass Garko textured but for 417 yeah you're talking about almost $500 for GTA X 1080 something that I wouldn't be super excited about again I mean this is just my opinion on this I would say that for 470 480 bucks I'd rather spend 400 of it on an RT X 2070 or even buy an RT X 2070 super for around 500 bucks then get a used 1080 TI although there are some applications where a 1080 TI would be beneficial I'm not gonna talk about those in this video it's just too deep of a topic but this is okay these prices are not anything to be super excited about and I do believe we are sorting by lowest price again yep we're sorting by lowest price and these are buying now options again you could look at bids that's fine but bids aren't really gonna tell you what the current prices are or the current going rates are for products in your and your scope now let's check out some more AMD cards see if we have any rx 5600 X T's that are used on the market this is something I don't expect to see very much of yeah and and it's pretty much all new stuff here this is brand-new from Newegg gigabyte right on our X 5600 XT gaming OC variant for 270 bucks this is not bad I mean these are like stock images here but this price is not bad for 5,600 XT keep in mind though AMD drivers are look a bit more old-school a lot of people like to recommend these and baller budgets these are rx 580 I'm gonna look for 8 gig variants you can buy one right now although it's coming from China apparently for a hundred bucks anything under I would say anything under a hundred bucks is gonna be a really good deal are we we are also sorting by the lowest price but you can see a lot of these prices have kind of bumped up I don't I personally don't think that a used rx 580 is worth a hundred and thirty bucks whether it's an 8 gig or 4 gig variant because you're getting pretty close to competitive new territory like when we're talking about the Nvidia RT analyst at RKO gtx 1660 at a 1660 super for 200 and 220 bucks the markets are gonna kind of fall in line where you would expect performance to be for these cards for the most part unless you're talking about vintage hardware but an RX 5 84 130 or 140 knowing that I could have gotten these a year ago for a hundred bucks used it's just it's it's not yeah not appetizing to me while we're on this topic I also wanted to check out the RX 474 gig cards now a few of these up front are mining variants not that there's anything wrong with these you want to make sure that they're flash to gaming BIOS is beforehand it's gonna be difficult to flash these back to to gaming biases if you have not done BIOS flashing or view BIOS flash conditions they in the past but these cards are pretty affordable if you want just an intro 1080p graphics card but then they jump up to about a hundred bucks and once you're in the hundred dollar territory you notice that a lot of these SKUs suddenly turn into gaming excuse and that is just that's how it is people know that they're willing to pay more for cards that were not mined with although there's no way to really know you see this one has the mining BIOS on it so before you put an offer on that one you might want to ask if you can flash that back to the gaming view BIOS but anyway you know there's nothing really spectacular about the rx cards in the used market and that's why some people have been recommending that you buy new rx for 80s and five 80s and I just think that that's I mean that works in certain cases but a lot of times if you're in a six hundred dollar gaming PC budget squeezing out even 200 bucks like 130 or budget on a graphics card a new one can go a long way so I don't think we saw anything too surprising here the market is definitely crippled to an extent a lot of the cards that are fairly powerful are not very competitive from a price standpoint just because you can buy new cards like a you know neutering cards let's say that are maybe only a hundred bucks more expensive that will have the driver support for several years and that will likely mature much better as a result of that and then also the efficiency factor the fact that you get arty cores and tensor cores for ray trace things and even the advanced its streaming codecs I should mention that because I'm using the new and Bank encoder for this it's not really streamed but I'm recording with with streamlines anyway you know you're getting something extra for that hundred bucks it's not like they're just trying to you know totally undercut the market here they're saying okay well if you want those couple extra things I'm gonna price the pascal variant just slightly under what it would cost you to buy a new turing skew and i think that's smart from a seller's perspective but it doesn't really help us as buyers especially when there's not much wiggle room and to add insult to injury there just aren't as many listings on ebay as i feel like there used to be which means that the inventory on the on the seller side drying up raises prices because now there aren't as many to choose from there's not as much competition so you don't have to compete with other listings that are maybe trying to undercut you at the end of the day i think the cards that are still worth considering the used market may be an RX 580 or 2 if you can find them for around a hundred bucks although from what I've seen you're gonna be paying a bit of a premium at least when we're referencing use prices from about a year or two ago and then the gtx 1070 1080 ballpark those two to three hundred ollar cards are still gonna be fairly competitive although knowing again in the back of my head that i used to pay 200 bucks for a 1070 now i have to pay 250 260 that just that's things a little bit you know I just it makes me want to look at the new market and then when you're talking about a gtx 1070 in particular you've got cards like the 1660 super that are doing a heck of a job brand new for around the same price fairly close from a performance standpoint as well to the gtx 1070 so keep that in mind and then when we're talking about new cards there just aren't many if any at all being sold used most of them are just you know washed over listings from new wagon amazon that are brand-new and at that point might as well buy from Amazon are new he just makes the buying process a bit simpler if you have accounts over there already so the market is a bit grim it still is a bit grim I'm hoping that we can revisit this topic in a few months and see much more on the market I feel like a lot of people are buying right now it's also part of the reason why we're not seeing as much listed on sites like eBay but again hopefully in a few months we'll see this turnaround you guys like this little video give it a thumbs up click the subscribe button and I'll catch you in the next one my name is Greg thanks for hunting for PC ads with meall right I know the camera angle is a bit weird you'll get used to it for this video in particular wanted to and I have just scroll through eBay see if we can find any decent graphics card deals and I'm sure that if they gonna be fairly competitive although knowing again in the back of my head that i used to pay 200 bucks for a 1070 now i have to pay 250 260 that just that's things a little bit you know I just it makes me want to look at the new market and then when you're talking about a gtx 1070 in particular you've got cards like the 1660 super that are doing a heck of a job brand new for around the same price fairly close from a performance standpoint as well to the gtx 1070 so keep that in mind and then when we're talking about new cards there just aren't many if any at all being sold used most of them are just you know washed over listings from new wagon amazon that are brand-new and at that point might as well buy from Amazon are new he just makes the buying process a bit simpler if you have accounts over there already so the market is a bit grim it still is a bit grim I'm hoping that we can revisit this topic in a few months and see much more on the market I feel like a lot of people are buying right now it's also part of the reason why we're not seeing as much listed on sites like eBay but again hopefully in a few months we'll see this turnaround you guys like this little video give it a thumbs up click the subscribe button and I'll catch you in the next one my name is Greg thanks for hunting for PC ads with me\n"
