The Concept Car: A Partnership between Sony and Honda
It was a neat opportunity for a more in-depth look at what a partnership between these two companies can even look like. Just like how people attribute Tesla's success to it being a good software company that also happens to be an auto manufacturer, Honda already knows how to manufacture and design good cars for the mass market. But together with Sony, the hope is that technology and software can round out the overall user experience.
Sony already specializes in cameras and image sensors, the fruits of which are scattered all around the vehicle for safety and driving assistance features. But there are also plenty of interesting user-centric features especially in the infotainment system, including being able to remote play with your PS5 while you're charging your car. As with most concepts, there's no way of telling how much of this will make it to an actual model, but it didn't seem too far off from a production-ready design.
Generally, the idea of owning an EV has tons of benefits that get me excited. We already know the obvious ones like the instant torque off the line that gives you a great sense of speed. Also, with less moving parts than traditional internal combustion engines, there's no need to wait for your car to warm up, waiting for the needle to go below a thousand RPMs is certainly fun when you're already five minutes late to work. However, while I love the idea of owning an EV and can certainly see myself owning one in the not-too-distant future, there are a few major reasons why I'm not quite ready to make the leap.
For me personally, owning an electric car will be a lifestyle adjustment that I'm unsure I can commit to just yet. First off, I don't have EV charging at my apartment complex, which means I have to rely on public charging stations to top off. Fortunately, I do live in Southern California, where the charging infrastructure is pretty built out.
However, put simply, charging is not as convenient as hitting up any of the 10 gas stations around my area when I need extra range for road trips. I drive over 300 miles a week between my commute to the office and weekend outings with friends. When the weather's nice, I enjoy spirited drives up in the canyons.
Realistically, the compromises here are one – my options for vehicles dwindle given range and budget. Two – I can certainly move to a spot with EV charging, though that would be silly to move light around the car and not the other way. Which leads me to number three, which is that I'm at the mercy of the charging infrastructure around my area, which will be a learning experience.
Moreover, it's hard to say how well I'll actually adjust to owning an EV. Buying a car already costs tens of thousands of dollars, and not being able to properly test drive and specifically live with one for an extended period of time makes it hard to say how well I'll actually adjust. The thought of buying a new EV simply stays a thought – I think that things are only going to get better from here and probably even faster than I can fathom.
The writing is on the wall for internal combustion, at least if automaker initiatives are an indicator of anything. And with Tesla opening up their Supercharger Network to third-party vehicles, this will help expedite progress towards countrywide standards and infrastructure.
