Multitasking on Android Devices: A Beginner's Guide
Hey guys, it's David from The Unlocker Calm and today we're going to do a Nandroid 101 post on how to use multitasking. One thing that you use most asking for is if you had multiple apps running and you want them to balance in between them.
One of the many uses of multitasking is when you need to switch between different tasks while having multiple apps open at the same time. For example, let's say you're on the internet looking at something and there's some tough math that you need to figure out for some reason. In this situation, holding down the home button until it vibrates will bring up all the last 8 apps that we were running. These apps are saved in their current state, so you can switch between them and do what you need to do.
To demonstrate this, let's go through a step-by-step process. We'll start by going to my notes, where I have some math here that's kind of tough. I've also got some music playing in the background that you can hear later. Now, let's hold down the home button until it vibrates. This will bring up all the last 8 apps that we were running.
As you can see, my notes are now displayed at the top of the screen. I've already got the calculator open, so I can hit the calculator and do some math while keeping an eye on the notes. Let's try to figure out this math problem for a moment. I'm not sure about it yet, but let's hold on for a second. Now that we're done with the math, we can go back to our notes and put in our answer.
We don't have to do anything else here, as we've already solved the math problem. However, if you want to open a new app, such as a browser or another music player, you can simply hit home and then open that new app. Now, let's see what happens when we hold home again. As you can see, the new app comes up to the top of the screen, and whatever was at the 8th position is now closed.
This means that only the last 8 apps that we had running are kept open. This is plenty of space to do most things you need to do. However, keep in mind that this is important because if you open 8 more different apps while still having these apps open, they will all be removed from the list and won't be able to switch between them again. You'll have to go back and reopen them, and they'll start from their starting position, not where you left them.
The reason for this is that the phone actually closes the app after 8 other apps have been used. However, if we go back and click on the maps app again, we can see that it now comes up to the top of the screen and becomes the new focus of the screen. This pattern continues throughout, so you'll need to get used to switching between apps quickly in order to use multitasking effectively.
And that's pretty much it. That's how to multitask on an Android device. With a little practice, you'll be able to switch between multiple apps with ease and get more done in less time.
