Friday 5 - Affinity Photo - a desktop-class photo editing app for iPad

Affinity Photo: A Powerful and User-Friendly Image Editing App

One thing that you'll notice right off the bat about Infinity Photo is that it features a desktop-class interface, but what's really impressive about Affinity Photo is that it's able to pack this feature set into a very easy-to-use approachable package. In other words, it doesn't feel overly cluttered with options and settings that sort of just get out of the way while you're working, but you know that they're there and you know that you can quickly access them whether it be a setting or a particular toggle or some other option. You know that it's just a few taps away at most.

This approachability is what really makes Affinity Photo shine because it's easy to use but extremely deep at the same time. The app includes an interactive introduction that guides you through some of the key features, and there are also 12 tutorials that you can step through to learn everything from opening and saving to selection refinement to tone mapping. These tutorials are baked right into the app itself, so you don't have to go out to a web page or go to YouTube to learn about the app - they're all right there within the app, taught in the best way possible with video.

In addition to these tutorials, there are also tooltip pop-ups that you can access by pressing on the little question mark in the bottom-right corner. When you do this, you'll instantly see overlays that help you identify the app's tools and sets, which will clue you in as to what each particular tool does. When you switch over to different personas (more on personas later), you'll see different tooltips that correspond to those personas.

Affinity Photo includes five personas: the photo persona, the selection persona, the brush studio persona, the color studio persona, and the paint studio persona. Personas are basically how to say this - they allow you to switch between different types of working environments, and when you do, you'll notice that the available options change, you'll notice that the menus change to correspond to the persona that you've selected. If you're editing or manipulating a photo, you want the photo persona; if you're performing selection-based actions, you want the selection persona.

The right-hand side of the screen features what Serif is calling Studios - these Studios can be pinned to the screen so that when you're interacting with your image, they stay on the screen. A Studio is basically any tool that's geared towards editing an image. For example, you have a Layers studio which allows you to adjust layers; you have a Color studio which allows you to adjust colors; and you have a Brushes studio which allows you to change brushes.

Each of these Studios has its own list of options and settings that sort of just get out of the way while you're working, but you know that they're there and you know that you can quickly access them. You can scroll through those lists vertically or horizontally, depending on your needs. For example, if you want to add some effects or edit some text, you can view the histogram and the various metadata associated with your image; adjust the channels; even transform just like this.

One feature that's sure to impress a lot of people is the smart content removal feature called in Painting. This allows you to draw on the screen with your in-painting brush, removing items from the image just like this - pretty impressive. And finally, Affinity Photo is available now for only $20 (it was revealed at Note when it was first announced and will go back up to its original price of $30 very soon).
