Caleb Tennyson with Digital Trends: Exploring Samsung's Massive 98-Inch 8K LED TV at CES 2019
Hey everybody, Caleb Tennyson with Digital Trends, and we're here at Samsung's absolutely massive and super compact booth. There's tons of people here, and everyone's crowded around one big thing – that's a 98-inch 8K Hewlett television. This is a big distinguishing bit about this TV, as it's not just an 8K display, but also a Q LED TV for Samsung. The Q LED mantra comes with a bunch of different features, including the no-gap wall mount. This means that as big as this TV is, it can be mounted with zero gap between the wall and the television itself – which is quite a big deal.
One of the most interesting aspects of this TV is its design and approachability. Samsung's One Connect box allows you to run a single cable up to the TV. It also automatically senses all the stuff that you plug into the TV, so whether it's your game console, Xbox PS4 Pro, or a Blu-ray player, not that you would need one with this TV – it'll actually recognize what that is and then set up the remote so that you can control it all those convenient features are what make this TV stand out from some of the other 98-inch 8K TVs we're seeing here today.
Another really important part of this TV is its peak brightness. We're talking about absolutely mind-blowing peak brightness, which means that the colors will be incredibly vivid and lifelike. Additionally, it has an extremely wide color gamut – which is also a key feature to look for in any modern TV. This wide color gamut will allow you to see more colors than ever before, making your viewing experience even more immersive.
Now, when it comes to upscaling 4K content to 8K, this is where things get really interesting. There's not a lot of 8K content available right now – most people will watch on this TV in 4K. However, the benefit of having an 8K display like this one is that you need the higher pixel density of 8K. But if you don't have any 8K content, you have to take that 4K content and upscale it to 8K.
Samsung employs a deep learning algorithm to handle this upscaling process. This means that it's actually taking a look at individual parts of the image – recognizing objects on a frame-by-frame basis, communicating with its database, and then filling in the gaps in an intelligent manner. It's not just looking at a wide swath of something and saying "oh, I see some green, I guess I'll put some more green over here." It's actually looking at things like "I know this is a leaf," "I know that this is fir," or "I know that this is grass."
This level of detail and intelligence will make all the difference in your viewing experience. As we move forward through the show, we're going to be looking at many different 8K TVs, but the differentiation factor here will likely be how good the upscaling is. And after you've purchased one, we'll see what it's like to own this TV.
Where we think Samsung really differentiates itself is in its approach to innovation and customer experience. We're excited to see what they do with this TV as we head into 2019, and we can't wait to share our full review with you once we have a chance to put it through its paces.

around one big thing that's 98 inch 8k Hewlett television and that's a big distinguishing bit about this TV is that it is aq LED TV for Samsung that means more than just quantum dots it has to do with the design and the approachability of the TV so if you've been paying attention to the Q LED mantra you know that comes with a bunch of different stuff one is and no gap wall mount this TV as big as it is can be mounted with the zero gap between the wall and the television itself which is kind of a big deal also Samsung's one connect box allows you to run a single cable up to the up to the TV it 8-inch 8k TVs that we're seeing up here also we're talking about absolutely mind-blowing peak brightness an extremely wide color gamut another really important part here and this is important for everybody is how we upscale the 4k content up to 8k because there's really not that much HP content out there right now most of what people will watch on this TV is going to be 4k but that's really the benefit when you get to a TV this size you need the higher pixel density of a K but if you don't have any K content you have to take that 4k content and intelligently up scale it up to a K Samsung employs the sort of deep learning algorithm it's actually taking a look at individual parts of the image it's recognizing objects on a frame-by-frame face and taking a look recognizing what that thing is communicating with the database and then filling in the gaps in an intelligent manner it's not just looking at a wide swath of something and saying oh I see some green here I guess I'll put some more green over here and these other pixels it's actually looking at things like I know this is a leaf I know that this is fir I know that this is a tree I know that this is grass I know this is an animal's nose for crying out loud it's looking it's millions and millions and millions and millions of different images that it's reaching back in order to make that upscaling job that much tighter so as we go forward through the show and we're looking at all these different 8k TVs the differentiation and differentiating factor excuse me is going to be how good is the upscaling and then after that what's it like to own the TV after if you purchased it all right where I think Samsung really differentiates itself so we're looking forward to see what this company does with this TV as we go into 2019 you can bet that we're going to give it a full review so visit back often to digital trends comm for that review and all of our CES 2019 coverage right here at the show I'm Caleb Denison and I'll
