Unboxing the Sony Ericsson Walkman Phone
The front-facing camera is just a VGA, and on the bottom, we have one physical home button, along with two capacitive touch buttons. The phone itself is very comfortable to hold, but it's a little bit thick for a small phone. It's still quite comfortable to hold, however.
Moving towards the top of the phone, we have the Walkman logo and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Below that, we have the on/off button, as well as a volume rocker that feels pretty tactile. There's also a dedicated camera shutter button, which is a nice touch. On the bottom of the phone, there's a hole for the lanyard, along with a microphone and a micro-USB slot for charging.
When we move to the back of the phone, we have the Walkman logo again, as well as two speaker grills that are quite visible. We can shoot videos in 720p HD with this rear-facing camera, and there's also an LED flash for better lighting conditions. The phone comes with a 4GB microSD card pre-installed, which is a nice touch.
The contents of the box include the phone itself, a battery (which is actually a 1200mAh EP500 battery), as well as a Sony Ericsson warranty certificate that specifies it's only applicable for products purchased in India. There are also some important information sheets, including GPS emergency calls, radio frequency ratings, and an FCC statement.
When we popped the back cover open, we found a microSD card slot, which is convenient to have on a phone. The battery compartment was a bit tricky to access, as the back cover is quite tight and difficult to remove. However, once we got it out, we could power on the phone and see what it's like.
The phone boots up quickly, with a 1GHz processor that also has a dedicated GPU. It runs Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), with a user interface called Timescape UI, which is commonly found on Sony Android phones. We can set our language to English, sign in with Google, and even register the phone later on.
The home screens are five in total, each with their own layout. The phone itself feels responsive, with quick icons like the Four Corners that allow us to easily access various features. When we open up the dialer, we need to log in with our Google account first. Finally, there's a notification tray that shows all the running apps.
We decided to test out the speaker quality of this phone by playing some content preloaded on it. We were surprised by how loud the speakers are, even at half volume. This is likely due to the Walkman heritage of the phone, which suggests that audio quality will be a priority. As we can see from the music app, the phone takes us directly to our music library.
Overall, this Sony Ericsson Walkman Phone seems like an interesting device that's designed with music lovers in mind. We'll be doing a more in-depth review of it soon, so stay tuned for more information about this unique Android phone.
