High Low Presented by Allate: A Test of Suspension Upgrades

Joby and Nolan, the duo behind High Low Presented by Allate, are back with another thrilling test of their suspension upgrades. In this episode, they're putting their S550 GT cars through a series of challenges to see how the new parts hold up.

As Joby puts it, "I'm going to sandbag I'm going to ruin your time." But little does he know, Nolan has a few tricks up his sleeve. The two drivers take turns navigating the track, each trying to shave off precious seconds from their lap times.

The first car, dubbed "High," is running stock suspension with some minor tweaks. Joby jumps in and takes it for a spin, but despite his best efforts, he can't quite keep up with Nolan's pace. Meanwhile, Nolan gets behind the wheel of "Low," which has received an upgraded suspension setup. He's got confidence in his car, saying, "This is just it, low car seems to be faster than High car if you look at the numbers."

As the session progresses, it becomes clear that Low is indeed gaining on High. The upgrades have paid off, and Nolan's driving skills are putting the difference to good use. Joby takes notice, saying, "I got a be her I got to be her" – his affection for Nolan's car is evident.

But what about the cost? Joby asks, "Does more expensive mean more better?" The answer, it seems, is no. While the upgrades have improved performance, they haven't quite delivered the promised gains. In fact, High has ended up being slower than Low by 6,500 seconds – a staggering margin.

Despite this, Joby and Nolan are undeterred. They're eager to get back on track next week, when they'll be adding more power to their cars with new intakes and exhaust. "We're going to try to get as much power as we can out of the coyote motor," Nolan promises. It's shaping up to be a thrilling episode, and we can't wait to see what's in store.

As for now, Joby reflects on the day's events, saying, "It was really fun though to get more reps." He pauses, lost in thought, before concluding, "Is that okay?" The takeaway from today's test is clear: while suspension upgrades have their benefits, they may not be as game-changing as we'd hoped. But that's what makes this episode so compelling – the unpredictability of it all.

Join us next week for another installment of High Low Presented by Allate, where power and performance will take center stage.

WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: entoday on high low presented by allate we upgrade our suspension starting to feel miserable here this is misery things don't go completely according to plan at the track just walking away from me why is that stupid car faster than this one and the whole crew learns a thing or two about drag racing that was crazy oh I love cars welcome to Donut we bought two nearly identical Ford Mustang GTs and we're modifying them for the drag strip I'm allowed to spend as much money as I want to upgrade my Mustang while I have to keep my entire modification budget under $10,000 all in an attempt to answer does more expensive mean more better in the last video we upgraded our wheels and tires and now to help keep our new rubber firmly planted to the track it's time to upgrade our suspension so with my unlimited budget I bought sta drag Springs nice don't touch sta double adjustable shocks rear camber arms toe links vertical links got enough boxes there Joby a subframe alignment kit a subframe bushing support system a differential bushing kit adjustable ride height spring perches oh that's greasy yeah last but not least a bump St stop kit all for about 6,000 bucks nice it's a lot of boxes for 6,000 that was a lot man uh lots of sta Parts sta stuff is really nice it's mostly made in America should all play well together and it's all you know they've been in the Mustang and Ford game for a long time so excited to get this stuff installed in the car and I bought some lowering springs that's it yeah so just some lowering springs 250 bucks from BMR is this actually all you got no we not we got a lot more stuff yeah ooh we also got a subframe brace kit from BMR and this is the chicken and waffles kit from Beefcake racing it's a bunch of BMR Parts we've got our differential lockout kit adjustable toe links and vertical links how much did you spend about 1,800 bucks we have not bad I know I'm still trying to keep that budget down though I rightfully so we want all the other mods we have planned for this series to work yep I decided Splurge a little bit on suspension you got to be able to put it down yes you want a tight locked in rear the first thing I noticed is that all my parts are blue and yours are red which is kind of bothering me some of my parts do look a little bit nicer a little more Billet but does that actually mean they're going to perform better and I think to find that out we're going to have to install them I think that's the entire point of this show here we go jar what you doing bud I'm just snuggling with my bear we got a bunch of parts that are pretty much going to be installed all at the same time so we're going to basically blast apart the rear end of this car that's essentially it broke the socket this thing is uh pretty tight we actually have to drop the entire rear subframe to get the Springs out every Bolt's a different size some people just know they can save hundreds on car insurance by checking all state first like you know to check your buddy's expertise first before he works on your car so everything's done oh yeah good to go you see the problem was the uh fibulator wasn't connected to the power pack in the right way and then that throws your graul all out of whack it's it's pretty simple if you know what you're doing oh I've uh never heard of a gra the graul graul yeah trust me man see it all the time you know what I think I forgot to grease the groove train oh the groove train the gr you didn't Grease the groove train yeah on these older models Justin yeah checking first is smart so check all state first for a quote that could save you hundreds click the link below to learn more in any Motorsport the suspension helps Main maintain optimal traction by keeping the tires planted to the track under acceleration cornering and braking but in Drag Racing there is no cornering and there's no braking until you cross the finish line so instead of worrying about lateral weight transfer and steering geometry for cornering what we are going to do is focus on front to rear weight transfer while accelerating since our Mustangs are rear wheeel drive meaning all of the power is going to be sent through the rear tires that's where we want to get all the traction we can get now as you probably know there are three things that can affect traction the tire compound the size of the contact patch and the amount of force pushing down on that contact patch so with our tires upgraded we address the compound and contact patch so our goal now is to get as much weight as possible onto the rear tires all we got to do is throw a big heer back there and we'll be winning baby so let me paint an ideal picture for you we launched the car right off the line as it quickly accelerates the effective center of gravity moves back transferring more of the car's weight to the rear tires now with the additional Force pushing down on the rear tires we get plenty of traction now as we speed up our rate of acceleration slows the effective center of gravity now moves back towards its original position as we reach our top speed that's what it looks like when everything goes right but it doesn't always go right so here are five not so ideal situations that we are hoping to avoid once we get our new suspension set up on bad scenario number one our rear springs they're too long slowing down the amount of time it takes for weight to actually transfer to the rear that's Scara number two our rear springs they're too soft or they bottom out too easily now the weight transfers quickly but when we hit a bump stop the rear end will actually rebound slightly making our tires lose traction bad scenario number three our front Springs are too stiff causing the wheel assembly to lift up now with the amount of power we're making that's not going to be a problem but eventually we could be making so much horsepower that we're going to be able to pop the front wheels up and then it will be a problem lifting that weight waste energy that could be used to move the car forward and we can no longer steer the car yeah you got to go straight but you got to make little tweaks while you're going out of the drag strip you got to put a little input in there this isn't video game there are a lot of things we do that could kill us here and no one seems to appreciate that except me dude sorry dog that's scenario number four the damping in our shocks is completely miscalibrated so now instead of our center of gravity slowly returning back to its original place it moves all over the place as our car bounces down the track and finally last but not least bad scenario number five everything is just plain loose like a hot dog sliding down a highway vibrations soft bushings a wobbly differential all of these can cause inefficiencies and unwanted movements in our suspension setup we got to tighten things up so with all that said our main goals with our upgrades is a quick and controlled weight transfer keeping our front tires down again not an issue yet but it could be and to make all of our suspension linkages as rigid as possible stock spring officially out get out of my way oh my God all right now that we got all the stock stuff out of the Mustangs we figured it'd be nice to take a look at the stock stuff versus our new stuff respectively and talk about what it is how it works and why we need to upgrade it so what do we got over Yonder we got our Springs first factory own 670 lb and then we've got ours which are the same 800 nice dude but the coils they look kind of different on ours they're a little bit tighter seems really heavy yours is a lot lighter yeah baby coiled up a little bit wider as well yeah yeah probably ours are way stronger these are going to help us transfer more of the mass of the car and the force of launch down through the tires help the tires grip the track up better and shoot us off the line a little bit better so now we've got our tow links in the back Factory one stamped steel rubber bushings these are going to go pretty soon here uh and obviously no adjustability not to mention I bet I can bend that so here's what we got to replace them this is mine and this is and this is mine uh you'll notice that they are pretty dang similar mine maybe looks a little bit more Sleek it does and I've got stainless steel Hardware which is nice uh mine looks like if I ask my friend to make it uh but they're going to do the same thing in the end they're going to give us adjustability they're clearly Stronger Yeah these might be slightly nicer but they're going to do the same job let's move on to the next thing up next are vertical links uh this is the stock vertical link uh basically this is responsible for keeping the knuckle at the rear of the car upright so it can't twist forward or backward it mounts like that and just keeps things from being able to move that way these are pretty weak and uh notoriously problematic for S550 drag race folks pretty easy and pretty common to beef these puppies up with these oo yours is really nice that's a fat chunk of Billet right there so this is an aluminum vertical link delin bushings and some steel inserts looks super nice it's very light and obviously extremely strong really nice mine again looks like a friend made it for me but give me a little bit nicer of a driving feel but compare it to this it's so much better than that so bad so I think you're doing all right I got these sta camber arms another big fat piece of Billet with a nice spherical ball in Teflon line this thing is so nice it's lightweight extremely strong and I've got a bunch of camber adjustment and I have the factory one hope they hold on for dear life for camber every race is kind of different drag racing we're going straight we're not going left and right when you're circuit racing you want a little bit more camber so when you're leaning side to side exactly onto the ground drag racing you want to just flatten it out as much as you can and get that rubber down on the ground oo baby oo zero camber here I come pretty easy to get the old stuff off it's going to be pretty easy to put the new stuff on so they'll go something like this more or less hi here I have some spring compressors to compress the spring so that we can get the top hat on and just go a little bit of time that's enough Jimmy yeah yeah Jim all right so we got our camber plates on now we're just tightening the whole strut up so uh you know it doesn't explode on us yeah I got to keep these things together hi team is doing a full coilover swap we are just changing our spring out so these are non-adjustable so whatever valving we have in there is what we get will we have the fine tune adjustments no will it matter at the end of the day probably not this is very high for me I I did my corner spring is in what do you want me to say new spring officially in New Spring officially in New Spring officially in there you go yeah I'm like I don't I don't know what the hell I'm supposed to say don't got guns like these that's actually true God damn I'm like a strong little creature or something like little Gremlin I was going to say a little hog or some you know Hogs be tough as buffer than Jimmy knuckle out baby Knuckle Up knuckle up so we got both Knuckles out and on low Team all we're going to do is change out the rear bushing this is where the tow link is going to go and then outside of that we should be able to just start bolting in our uh shiny bits these things have been sitting in there since 2016 so it's going to be seized up I'd be curious to see how much pressure it's going to take to push this thing out we've got a gauge right there let's see this always makes me nervous it's an aluminum lower control arm so I mean hopefully it'll be fine oh not too bad 2 and 1/2 tons of pressure it's coming out not too bad there it is so it's out with the old in with the new we're going to put the spherical Ford Racing one in and if you ever use like spherical bearings or anything that's obviously metal put them in the freezer that way it shrinks it and it won't be as much pressure Lube them up really good so that they slide right in let's do it easy enough Famous Last Words dude I know oh god oh no there she goes yeah bam well that seems to be where it wanted to stop 100% does one down one more to go all right we got some more bracing here this guy is called the independent suspension bracing kit and this actually is a more physical connection between the rear subframe and the chassis itself so this guy right here goes through the subframe right here right as I was saying right there get in there oh yes yes I think this thing's going to ride pretty stiff it's probably going to suck uh around town to be honest that's not what we're building it for we're building it for straight line domination excellent the car is fighting me it's the last bushing it does not want to push out so I'm hoping put some force on it keep it there use a blowtorch keep the metal on the outside and hopefully it expands enough just to break loose a little bit now don't want to push this in sideways this aluminum arm can crack real easily and this is terrifying every time this every bead is just a little bit of nervousness coming out yeah there we go extraordinary we're in the home stretch everything's coming together almost done with the bushing inserts we've got most of the rear Loosely put together things need to be tightened and uh we're close yeah real close so to get to the bolt for this lower control arm bushing I need to move the spring but to remove the spring I need to drop the actual cradle or the subframe and Nolan has already installed our cradle support brace so we're going to have to undo all of this classic low team yeah we have to redo pretty much all the work that we did yesterday into the breach once more right okay oh yeah we're trying to get this done today so we're hurrying I get in the zone I start seeing red oh now that scaled me okay it's okay that car just keeps coming out of nowhere I don't have enough room for my wrench three videos in high low Mustangs and I'm starting to feel miserable here this is misery it's so complicated it's pretty complicated I bet there's a very very specific way you're supposed to do this I'm sure there's like a fortech that sh laughing yeah probably this would be really hard for someone in their garage I think like oh yeah you didn't have like a floor jack like something really low profile to sit this on top of like you would have had if you were doing this on the ground you would have had to drop the exhaust first yeah I agree I totally agree you have to get everything out of your way to lower your car just to lower your car it's wild you okay I'm so sorry are you okay are you all right yeah first nutshot of high low history okay sometimes you just got to take one from the freaking Family Jewels dude okay I know we've talked about all the stuff already but now that it's installed it's a little bit easier to see what it does uh so let's go over the tour of our parts we've got our new rear shocks uh compression and rebound damping adjustable which will be nice to help us dial in our launch we got our new rear shock mounts with spherical bushings should be nice and crisp uh we've got our vertical links which will help keep the knuckle from uh rocking or twisting this way we got our camber arms which will give us a lot of camber adjustment and are extremely strong new Springs which are stiffer and should help us transfer more power to the tires quickly for a great launch bushing inserts on the subframe and the differential that'll help keep everything really solid and keep it from rocking around a bunch under launch which will also help us transfer power to the ground with no drama so all this is going to come together to make a very crisp and responsive rear end that should help us launch real good real consistently at the drag strip pretty close to time to find out if that's true since we just put all the stuff on the car I think we should probably throw the fatties on and see how it looks and adjust our ride height let's see it woo oh yeah that thing looks tough yeah a it's nice love that okay the car's back on the ground for the first time in a couple days and to be honest from out here it looks pretty much the same but the difference is that we have a bunch more adjustability in the car it should help us go down the track a little bit faster so the next thing we need to do before going to the track is get it aligned and this alignment is going to be basically meant to just go straight and have the biggest contact patch possible but before we go to the alignment shop what's going on over here I thought you guys were going to be done way before us me too yeah what do you got left everything a didn't you get hit in the nuts yeah about 5:30 High team has gone home already granted they had like four people working on the car today today it's just been me and Adam literally one bolt this one bolt this oneing bolt right here um I told my fiance that we were going to hang out tonight but I think I made a liar out of myself I'm sweaty I'm stinky might be a little hungry time for an ice cream after two days of pretty frustrating work car is finally going on the ground Adam let's see what this thing looks like with those lowering springs let's see ooh ooh it looks low Adam it looks a little little low front is a lot lower it's a lot lower wow that's like way more dramatic than than High car yeah I like it me too it's a lot lower now it has a bit of a lean forward rake to it like a real hot rod and in true low car style it looks impractically low which I love now we got a bunch of grip back there also just all the reinforcement we put in the rear of this car it's starting to feel like a proper low car team low car now uh I really like it I don't know if we're going to see that dramatic of a difference I'm very much looking forward to seeing what all the reinforcements that we've installed how they affect the launch how it feels let's do it we are back at the eighth mile drag strip at Irwindale Speedway we've got both of our times from the last video and we're going to see who's improved the most with their new suspension yeah but before we see that we need to tune our suspension something low team wouldn't know anything about while you nerds are fiddling around with some knobs we're going to be out here getting some more practice runs in where the hell did you come from how's it going bro pleasure to meet you I saved him in the desert was that uh that was so bizarre that I lost my train of thought I'm sorry Tristan's here Jerry couldn't make it a day you're going to see him working on low car a little bit later as well so hi team you're going to make your adjustments low team over here we're going to get some practice passes and when you guys are done making your little adjustments we'll have a final showdown to see if more expensive really does mean more better let's go guys get the tools get the tools game plan is to go full soft on every adjustment that we have first and then do a couple passes see how it acts then bring it back in and go full hard on all of our adjustments I want to see the ends of the spectrum everything at full soft everything at full hard and then we'll start tweaking and trying to find that happy medium that balance but we've also got Mendy our Pro driver we're going to put her in the driver's seat for all these test runs not only because she's super consistent and reliable but because she's got a lot of experience so she understands and interprets the feedback from the car very well and can then give that feedback to us we should be able to make some improvements primarily in our 60t number getting off the line is very important and I think that's what we're really focus on today Mindy staged ready and go he they look fast look good look beautiful I have no complaints what do you think how' it feel felt good feels a little stiffer than it was before stock stock well yeah it probably is it's got a much stiffer rear spring last time around this thing was trying to search on the top end yeah and it's stuck yeah yeah alignment feels good it took care of that good a great launch off beautiful launch every time probably cuz the suspension is so well set up yeah could be probably just that that's good time to go hard in the paint the soft launch looked pretty good I'm interested to see how much different the fully firm launch looks Wheels getting torqued back on we'll put the car back on track Mindy behind the wheel and uh see what changes all right so high team's over there fiddling with some knobs we're just getting our reps in honestly I think that might be more worth it in the end sometimes you get lost in the sauce of just trying to get too expensive a parts when in reality you just want seat time or track time and just getting better and better every time I think we've got a little bit of an advantage come on come on come on come on come on W I'm about to go crazy in the stew I'm going to do a burnout in the blueberry whip this is my first time ever on a drag strip Tristan you ready yes sir all right you don't have to call please don't call me sir okay press firmly on the brake okay we're line locked the front wheels are locked so now press on the gas and just do a fat burnout dude ready just mash it do it that was sick all right now let's go forward once that third Amber bulb turns on that's when we're going to go nice Jesus nice reaction time bro that was so sick this thing hooked that was great I'm sweaty y I'm activated my testosterone's through the roof right now I just want to do some push-ups all right I'm going to hop out you got it put Nolan you got it dude you can do it what if I don't have the skill what if I don't have the You Got It Tristan just go just go I can't I can't today I can't I can't but put it in drive I know man I'm scared it's kids man I'm nervous come on oh 833 34 is that our best one that was crazy oh I love cars good fastest time the cars run really yeah no way are you serious yeah wow wow okay we got a car should we maybe throw him in the left lane real quick and see what happens sure D I mean it gets out of the hole pretty good it's best for both yeah yeah dude two super quick passes back to back for Tristan first time out might be a ringer I don't know look at that boy that was single-handedly one of the coolest moments of my entire life like literally yesterday I didn't even know I was going to be here and now I'm here going Absolut Ely nuto laying down some rubber with my boy with his with his rare exotic water dear God if you guys have never drag race before or if you think it's like a boring sport no come out to your track go to your track I'm sure there's a track in your I of the woods go out support your local racetrack it's fun it's a lot of fun the full stiff setting seems to be a little bit too stiff you can see it bouncing down the track doesn't feel great to Mendy and uh it's not making us any faster so there's really no reason to make it stiffer than it needs to be so I think it's time to crank things down a little bit and put everything a little bit in the middle one 2 3 4 5 6 there we go oh damn how'd that feel you can definitely tell the difference yeah uh it looked smooth down the whole way off the line looked great and you shave some time the car is happy so I think that that middle ground is about right cool as we can see at half chup we're at 1.95 6 which is a significant difference compared to full soft and full hard we're definitely in the ballpark hell yeah is that our car name half chub I like that name well all right the time is here we've got a lot of tuning done low team's got a lot of practice done it's time to see which car is the fastest does more expensive mean more better you guys ready oh yeah let's have some fun we've got Zack job and High car and Nolan J syes in low car our team captains let's see who's faster okay just looking for a good Reaction Time nice launch and to beat Nolan is that too much to ask Nolan stage there we go they're dang he got me off the line no no one's got it no one's got it eight Dam got him this thing launches so hard this thing feels really good now we didn't spend too much money you guys are too busy thinking about one click this way one click this way Justin and Tristan are next oh I'm next bro I'm next up out of Atlanta I got to go he's on his own now they grow up so quickly I got to chill I jumped the gun no oh red light first time driving High car with the new suspension it felt extremely good no weird shimmies going down the road it actually feels faster feels more planted okay something's going crazy in the back I think uh sounds suspension wise like every time it sort of snaps in the gear goes we'll figure out what it is it be clunky all right I'm all lined up now it's time to put it down great his ass damn she got a good jump step treat him but it looks like low car is catching all right 849 woo baby that felt good I think we had a faster ET well we won the race so yep 842 yeah what's going on is you guys car just uh you got an extra cylinder in there you've had these cars D out yeah and High car actually has 20 horsepower more than low car interesting really I would have guessed the opposite based on what's been going on here drag racing makes no sense it's magic so these are our numbers from last time our fastest Eighth Mile in High car and our fastest Eighth Mile in low car now as we learned uh last time and uh throughout doing this track conditions and the weather make a big difference on how quick the cars can go down the track so what we're really going to be looking at is this time differential in between the two last time it was 049 seconds now if that Gap gets bigger and High car car ends up going faster relative to low car then that's good for us if that Gap gets smaller and High car is not going much faster than low car that's bad for us good for low team so while these numbers may change what we're really paying attention to is that time differential in between both cars the day is going to make a difference for the time but that Gap should remain pretty similar until we get quicker no but you all right it's Joby and I once again but now we're switching cars that's right I'm going to sandbag I'm going to ruin your time nice 83 what man that was a pretty good race low car does seem a little bit quicker than High car so that's interesting what woo this car does feel faster holy sh low car is faster definitively it's just it's just faster step is staged they're both staged and they're off had a great reaction time 037 you can tell the confidence he's got in high cars just through the roof oh damn I had the AC on this time I pulled the JY I was like wow why am I so cold and I feel so good out of the AC on I mean so far with the money that's been spent I really think low car is the move starting to notice a trend and that's it low car seems to be faster than High car if you look at the numbers uh low car has has a smattering of 83s and 84s where High car has a bunch of 84s 85s and 86s uh so to take uh the variable that is us out of the equation uh it's time to put a pro in the driver's seat of both cars and see what happens wow Nolan really is like the track Dad it's called being a crew chief crew chief AKA track dad ready ready and go Dam just walking away from me why is that stupid car faster than this one damn M's just a beast come on I got a be her I got to be her Adam just pulled on her why it why would low car be faster this ho big ass no do you want him yeah sure oh my God go bye that's cool man that sounded insane I didn't know what that was smelled weird when it took off too that was smell it that was incredible well Joby it's time to answer the question what question does more expensive mean more better I think today suspension wise I think it doesn't mean more better and sometimes the truth is hard to handle and today that's how I'm feeling we got slower and uh the Delta has shifted in your favor by a lot Yeah Yeah by 6500s of a second feels pretty good feels pretty good I have to say I don't think it does our takeaway today spending a bunch of money on suspension parts on a nearly stock S550 GT not GNA give you a lot of gains arguably reverse gains I didn't really think that this was going to be the case because normally the car stuff that we do around the track with corners and things like that suspension and tires make a huge difference yes absolutely we did have our fastest pass of the entire show so far but for the amount of work we did I don't know and the conditions being different I'm not sure we could say that that was the mods doing it we're not going to reap the benefits of the work that we did today until we add some more power I think that's right this is a little preemptive I think it was really fun though to get more reps that's a big part of what's going on here apart from just the parts that we've installed in the cars there's a lot of you know getting out of your own way getting comfortable with this figuring out how you're going to launch the car how you interface with the car that said today was fun did it go how I wanted it to no is that okay yes join us next week where we will be adding hopefully some more power to these cars with new intakes and exhaust we're going to try to get as much power as we can out of the coyote motor it's going to be a fun one I can't wait to hear that sound oh yeah see you on the next one next week on high low presented by allate we upgrade our intakes and exhaust there's an accident at the office what are you looking at me for you two were the only ones in here for the last couple hours and I know my dog's poop Edgar doesn't even like peanuts and Jimmy enters the pain vortextoday on high low presented by allate we upgrade our suspension starting to feel miserable here this is misery things don't go completely according to plan at the track just walking away from me why is that stupid car faster than this one and the whole crew learns a thing or two about drag racing that was crazy oh I love cars welcome to Donut we bought two nearly identical Ford Mustang GTs and we're modifying them for the drag strip I'm allowed to spend as much money as I want to upgrade my Mustang while I have to keep my entire modification budget under $10,000 all in an attempt to answer does more expensive mean more better in the last video we upgraded our wheels and tires and now to help keep our new rubber firmly planted to the track it's time to upgrade our suspension so with my unlimited budget I bought sta drag Springs nice don't touch sta double adjustable shocks rear camber arms toe links vertical links got enough boxes there Joby a subframe alignment kit a subframe bushing support system a differential bushing kit adjustable ride height spring perches oh that's greasy yeah last but not least a bump St stop kit all for about 6,000 bucks nice it's a lot of boxes for 6,000 that was a lot man uh lots of sta Parts sta stuff is really nice it's mostly made in America should all play well together and it's all you know they've been in the Mustang and Ford game for a long time so excited to get this stuff installed in the car and I bought some lowering springs that's it yeah so just some lowering springs 250 bucks from BMR is this actually all you got no we not we got a lot more stuff yeah ooh we also got a subframe brace kit from BMR and this is the chicken and waffles kit from Beefcake racing it's a bunch of BMR Parts we've got our differential lockout kit adjustable toe links and vertical links how much did you spend about 1,800 bucks we have not bad I know I'm still trying to keep that budget down though I rightfully so we want all the other mods we have planned for this series to work yep I decided Splurge a little bit on suspension you got to be able to put it down yes you want a tight locked in rear the first thing I noticed is that all my parts are blue and yours are red which is kind of bothering me some of my parts do look a little bit nicer a little more Billet but does that actually mean they're going to perform better and I think to find that out we're going to have to install them I think that's the entire point of this show here we go jar what you doing bud I'm just snuggling with my bear we got a bunch of parts that are pretty much going to be installed all at the same time so we're going to basically blast apart the rear end of this car that's essentially it broke the socket this thing is uh pretty tight we actually have to drop the entire rear subframe to get the Springs out every Bolt's a different size some people just know they can save hundreds on car insurance by checking all state first like you know to check your buddy's expertise first before he works on your car so everything's done oh yeah good to go you see the problem was the uh fibulator wasn't connected to the power pack in the right way and then that throws your graul all out of whack it's it's pretty simple if you know what you're doing oh I've uh never heard of a gra the graul graul yeah trust me man see it all the time you know what I think I forgot to grease the groove train oh the groove train the gr you didn't Grease the groove train yeah on these older models Justin yeah checking first is smart so check all state first for a quote that could save you hundreds click the link below to learn more in any Motorsport the suspension helps Main maintain optimal traction by keeping the tires planted to the track under acceleration cornering and braking but in Drag Racing there is no cornering and there's no braking until you cross the finish line so instead of worrying about lateral weight transfer and steering geometry for cornering what we are going to do is focus on front to rear weight transfer while accelerating since our Mustangs are rear wheeel drive meaning all of the power is going to be sent through the rear tires that's where we want to get all the traction we can get now as you probably know there are three things that can affect traction the tire compound the size of the contact patch and the amount of force pushing down on that contact patch so with our tires upgraded we address the compound and contact patch so our goal now is to get as much weight as possible onto the rear tires all we got to do is throw a big heer back there and we'll be winning baby so let me paint an ideal picture for you we launched the car right off the line as it quickly accelerates the effective center of gravity moves back transferring more of the car's weight to the rear tires now with the additional Force pushing down on the rear tires we get plenty of traction now as we speed up our rate of acceleration slows the effective center of gravity now moves back towards its original position as we reach our top speed that's what it looks like when everything goes right but it doesn't always go right so here are five not so ideal situations that we are hoping to avoid once we get our new suspension set up on bad scenario number one our rear springs they're too long slowing down the amount of time it takes for weight to actually transfer to the rear that's Scara number two our rear springs they're too soft or they bottom out too easily now the weight transfers quickly but when we hit a bump stop the rear end will actually rebound slightly making our tires lose traction bad scenario number three our front Springs are too stiff causing the wheel assembly to lift up now with the amount of power we're making that's not going to be a problem but eventually we could be making so much horsepower that we're going to be able to pop the front wheels up and then it will be a problem lifting that weight waste energy that could be used to move the car forward and we can no longer steer the car yeah you got to go straight but you got to make little tweaks while you're going out of the drag strip you got to put a little input in there this isn't video game there are a lot of things we do that could kill us here and no one seems to appreciate that except me dude sorry dog that's scenario number four the damping in our shocks is completely miscalibrated so now instead of our center of gravity slowly returning back to its original place it moves all over the place as our car bounces down the track and finally last but not least bad scenario number five everything is just plain loose like a hot dog sliding down a highway vibrations soft bushings a wobbly differential all of these can cause inefficiencies and unwanted movements in our suspension setup we got to tighten things up so with all that said our main goals with our upgrades is a quick and controlled weight transfer keeping our front tires down again not an issue yet but it could be and to make all of our suspension linkages as rigid as possible stock spring officially out get out of my way oh my God all right now that we got all the stock stuff out of the Mustangs we figured it'd be nice to take a look at the stock stuff versus our new stuff respectively and talk about what it is how it works and why we need to upgrade it so what do we got over Yonder we got our Springs first factory own 670 lb and then we've got ours which are the same 800 nice dude but the coils they look kind of different on ours they're a little bit tighter seems really heavy yours is a lot lighter yeah baby coiled up a little bit wider as well yeah yeah probably ours are way stronger these are going to help us transfer more of the mass of the car and the force of launch down through the tires help the tires grip the track up better and shoot us off the line a little bit better so now we've got our tow links in the back Factory one stamped steel rubber bushings these are going to go pretty soon here uh and obviously no adjustability not to mention I bet I can bend that so here's what we got to replace them this is mine and this is and this is mine uh you'll notice that they are pretty dang similar mine maybe looks a little bit more Sleek it does and I've got stainless steel Hardware which is nice uh mine looks like if I ask my friend to make it uh but they're going to do the same thing in the end they're going to give us adjustability they're clearly Stronger Yeah these might be slightly nicer but they're going to do the same job let's move on to the next thing up next are vertical links uh this is the stock vertical link uh basically this is responsible for keeping the knuckle at the rear of the car upright so it can't twist forward or backward it mounts like that and just keeps things from being able to move that way these are pretty weak and uh notoriously problematic for S550 drag race folks pretty easy and pretty common to beef these puppies up with these oo yours is really nice that's a fat chunk of Billet right there so this is an aluminum vertical link delin bushings and some steel inserts looks super nice it's very light and obviously extremely strong really nice mine again looks like a friend made it for me but give me a little bit nicer of a driving feel but compare it to this it's so much better than that so bad so I think you're doing all right I got these sta camber arms another big fat piece of Billet with a nice spherical ball in Teflon line this thing is so nice it's lightweight extremely strong and I've got a bunch of camber adjustment and I have the factory one hope they hold on for dear life for camber every race is kind of different drag racing we're going straight we're not going left and right when you're circuit racing you want a little bit more camber so when you're leaning side to side exactly onto the ground drag racing you want to just flatten it out as much as you can and get that rubber down on the ground oo baby oo zero camber here I come pretty easy to get the old stuff off it's going to be pretty easy to put the new stuff on so they'll go something like this more or less hi here I have some spring compressors to compress the spring so that we can get the top hat on and just go a little bit of time that's enough Jimmy yeah yeah Jim all right so we got our camber plates on now we're just tightening the whole strut up so uh you know it doesn't explode on us yeah I got to keep these things together hi team is doing a full coilover swap we are just changing our spring out so these are non-adjustable so whatever valving we have in there is what we get will we have the fine tune adjustments no will it matter at the end of the day probably not this is very high for me I I did my corner spring is in what do you want me to say new spring officially in New Spring officially in New Spring officially in there you go yeah I'm like I don't I don't know what the hell I'm supposed to say don't got guns like these that's actually true God damn I'm like a strong little creature or something like little Gremlin I was going to say a little hog or some you know Hogs be tough as buffer than Jimmy knuckle out baby Knuckle Up knuckle up so we got both Knuckles out and on low Team all we're going to do is change out the rear bushing this is where the tow link is going to go and then outside of that we should be able to just start bolting in our uh shiny bits these things have been sitting in there since 2016 so it's going to be seized up I'd be curious to see how much pressure it's going to take to push this thing out we've got a gauge right there let's see this always makes me nervous it's an aluminum lower control arm so I mean hopefully it'll be fine oh not too bad 2 and 1/2 tons of pressure it's coming out not too bad there it is so it's out with the old in with the new we're going to put the spherical Ford Racing one in and if you ever use like spherical bearings or anything that's obviously metal put them in the freezer that way it shrinks it and it won't be as much pressure Lube them up really good so that they slide right in let's do it easy enough Famous Last Words dude I know oh god oh no there she goes yeah bam well that seems to be where it wanted to stop 100% does one down one more to go all right we got some more bracing here this guy is called the independent suspension bracing kit and this actually is a more physical connection between the rear subframe and the chassis itself so this guy right here goes through the subframe right here right as I was saying right there get in there oh yes yes I think this thing's going to ride pretty stiff it's probably going to suck uh around town to be honest that's not what we're building it for we're building it for straight line domination excellent the car is fighting me it's the last bushing it does not want to push out so I'm hoping put some force on it keep it there use a blowtorch keep the metal on the outside and hopefully it expands enough just to break loose a little bit now don't want to push this in sideways this aluminum arm can crack real easily and this is terrifying every time this every bead is just a little bit of nervousness coming out yeah there we go extraordinary we're in the home stretch everything's coming together almost done with the bushing inserts we've got most of the rear Loosely put together things need to be tightened and uh we're close yeah real close so to get to the bolt for this lower control arm bushing I need to move the spring but to remove the spring I need to drop the actual cradle or the subframe and Nolan has already installed our cradle support brace so we're going to have to undo all of this classic low team yeah we have to redo pretty much all the work that we did yesterday into the breach once more right okay oh yeah we're trying to get this done today so we're hurrying I get in the zone I start seeing red oh now that scaled me okay it's okay that car just keeps coming out of nowhere I don't have enough room for my wrench three videos in high low Mustangs and I'm starting to feel miserable here this is misery it's so complicated it's pretty complicated I bet there's a very very specific way you're supposed to do this I'm sure there's like a fortech that sh laughing yeah probably this would be really hard for someone in their garage I think like oh yeah you didn't have like a floor jack like something really low profile to sit this on top of like you would have had if you were doing this on the ground you would have had to drop the exhaust first yeah I agree I totally agree you have to get everything out of your way to lower your car just to lower your car it's wild you okay I'm so sorry are you okay are you all right yeah first nutshot of high low history okay sometimes you just got to take one from the freaking Family Jewels dude okay I know we've talked about all the stuff already but now that it's installed it's a little bit easier to see what it does uh so let's go over the tour of our parts we've got our new rear shocks uh compression and rebound damping adjustable which will be nice to help us dial in our launch we got our new rear shock mounts with spherical bushings should be nice and crisp uh we've got our vertical links which will help keep the knuckle from uh rocking or twisting this way we got our camber arms which will give us a lot of camber adjustment and are extremely strong new Springs which are stiffer and should help us transfer more power to the tires quickly for a great launch bushing inserts on the subframe and the differential that'll help keep everything really solid and keep it from rocking around a bunch under launch which will also help us transfer power to the ground with no drama so all this is going to come together to make a very crisp and responsive rear end that should help us launch real good real consistently at the drag strip pretty close to time to find out if that's true since we just put all the stuff on the car I think we should probably throw the fatties on and see how it looks and adjust our ride height let's see it woo oh yeah that thing looks tough yeah a it's nice love that okay the car's back on the ground for the first time in a couple days and to be honest from out here it looks pretty much the same but the difference is that we have a bunch more adjustability in the car it should help us go down the track a little bit faster so the next thing we need to do before going to the track is get it aligned and this alignment is going to be basically meant to just go straight and have the biggest contact patch possible but before we go to the alignment shop what's going on over here I thought you guys were going to be done way before us me too yeah what do you got left everything a didn't you get hit in the nuts yeah about 5:30 High team has gone home already granted they had like four people working on the car today today it's just been me and Adam literally one bolt this one bolt this oneing bolt right here um I told my fiance that we were going to hang out tonight but I think I made a liar out of myself I'm sweaty I'm stinky might be a little hungry time for an ice cream after two days of pretty frustrating work car is finally going on the ground Adam let's see what this thing looks like with those lowering springs let's see ooh ooh it looks low Adam it looks a little little low front is a lot lower it's a lot lower wow that's like way more dramatic than than High car yeah I like it me too it's a lot lower now it has a bit of a lean forward rake to it like a real hot rod and in true low car style it looks impractically low which I love now we got a bunch of grip back there also just all the reinforcement we put in the rear of this car it's starting to feel like a proper low car team low car now uh I really like it I don't know if we're going to see that dramatic of a difference I'm very much looking forward to seeing what all the reinforcements that we've installed how they affect the launch how it feels let's do it we are back at the eighth mile drag strip at Irwindale Speedway we've got both of our times from the last video and we're going to see who's improved the most with their new suspension yeah but before we see that we need to tune our suspension something low team wouldn't know anything about while you nerds are fiddling around with some knobs we're going to be out here getting some more practice runs in where the hell did you come from how's it going bro pleasure to meet you I saved him in the desert was that uh that was so bizarre that I lost my train of thought I'm sorry Tristan's here Jerry couldn't make it a day you're going to see him working on low car a little bit later as well so hi team you're going to make your adjustments low team over here we're going to get some practice passes and when you guys are done making your little adjustments we'll have a final showdown to see if more expensive really does mean more better let's go guys get the tools get the tools game plan is to go full soft on every adjustment that we have first and then do a couple passes see how it acts then bring it back in and go full hard on all of our adjustments I want to see the ends of the spectrum everything at full soft everything at full hard and then we'll start tweaking and trying to find that happy medium that balance but we've also got Mendy our Pro driver we're going to put her in the driver's seat for all these test runs not only because she's super consistent and reliable but because she's got a lot of experience so she understands and interprets the feedback from the car very well and can then give that feedback to us we should be able to make some improvements primarily in our 60t number getting off the line is very important and I think that's what we're really focus on today Mindy staged ready and go he they look fast look good look beautiful I have no complaints what do you think how' it feel felt good feels a little stiffer than it was before stock stock well yeah it probably is it's got a much stiffer rear spring last time around this thing was trying to search on the top end yeah and it's stuck yeah yeah alignment feels good it took care of that good a great launch off beautiful launch every time probably cuz the suspension is so well set up yeah could be probably just that that's good time to go hard in the paint the soft launch looked pretty good I'm interested to see how much different the fully firm launch looks Wheels getting torqued back on we'll put the car back on track Mindy behind the wheel and uh see what changes all right so high team's over there fiddling with some knobs we're just getting our reps in honestly I think that might be more worth it in the end sometimes you get lost in the sauce of just trying to get too expensive a parts when in reality you just want seat time or track time and just getting better and better every time I think we've got a little bit of an advantage come on come on come on come on come on W I'm about to go crazy in the stew I'm going to do a burnout in the blueberry whip this is my first time ever on a drag strip Tristan you ready yes sir all right you don't have to call please don't call me sir okay press firmly on the brake okay we're line locked the front wheels are locked so now press on the gas and just do a fat burnout dude ready just mash it do it that was sick all right now let's go forward once that third Amber bulb turns on that's when we're going to go nice Jesus nice reaction time bro that was so sick this thing hooked that was great I'm sweaty y I'm activated my testosterone's through the roof right now I just want to do some push-ups all right I'm going to hop out you got it put Nolan you got it dude you can do it what if I don't have the skill what if I don't have the You Got It Tristan just go just go I can't I can't today I can't I can't but put it in drive I know man I'm scared it's kids man I'm nervous come on oh 833 34 is that our best one that was crazy oh I love cars good fastest time the cars run really yeah no way are you serious yeah wow wow okay we got a car should we maybe throw him in the left lane real quick and see what happens sure D I mean it gets out of the hole pretty good it's best for both yeah yeah dude two super quick passes back to back for Tristan first time out might be a ringer I don't know look at that boy that was single-handedly one of the coolest moments of my entire life like literally yesterday I didn't even know I was going to be here and now I'm here going Absolut Ely nuto laying down some rubber with my boy with his with his rare exotic water dear God if you guys have never drag race before or if you think it's like a boring sport no come out to your track go to your track I'm sure there's a track in your I of the woods go out support your local racetrack it's fun it's a lot of fun the full stiff setting seems to be a little bit too stiff you can see it bouncing down the track doesn't feel great to Mendy and uh it's not making us any faster so there's really no reason to make it stiffer than it needs to be so I think it's time to crank things down a little bit and put everything a little bit in the middle one 2 3 4 5 6 there we go oh damn how'd that feel you can definitely tell the difference yeah uh it looked smooth down the whole way off the line looked great and you shave some time the car is happy so I think that that middle ground is about right cool as we can see at half chup we're at 1.95 6 which is a significant difference compared to full soft and full hard we're definitely in the ballpark hell yeah is that our car name half chub I like that name well all right the time is here we've got a lot of tuning done low team's got a lot of practice done it's time to see which car is the fastest does more expensive mean more better you guys ready oh yeah let's have some fun we've got Zack job and High car and Nolan J syes in low car our team captains let's see who's faster okay just looking for a good Reaction Time nice launch and to beat Nolan is that too much to ask Nolan stage there we go they're dang he got me off the line no no one's got it no one's got it eight Dam got him this thing launches so hard this thing feels really good now we didn't spend too much money you guys are too busy thinking about one click this way one click this way Justin and Tristan are next oh I'm next bro I'm next up out of Atlanta I got to go he's on his own now they grow up so quickly I got to chill I jumped the gun no oh red light first time driving High car with the new suspension it felt extremely good no weird shimmies going down the road it actually feels faster feels more planted okay something's going crazy in the back I think uh sounds suspension wise like every time it sort of snaps in the gear goes we'll figure out what it is it be clunky all right I'm all lined up now it's time to put it down great his ass damn she got a good jump step treat him but it looks like low car is catching all right 849 woo baby that felt good I think we had a faster ET well we won the race so yep 842 yeah what's going on is you guys car just uh you got an extra cylinder in there you've had these cars D out yeah and High car actually has 20 horsepower more than low car interesting really I would have guessed the opposite based on what's been going on here drag racing makes no sense it's magic so these are our numbers from last time our fastest Eighth Mile in High car and our fastest Eighth Mile in low car now as we learned uh last time and uh throughout doing this track conditions and the weather make a big difference on how quick the cars can go down the track so what we're really going to be looking at is this time differential in between the two last time it was 049 seconds now if that Gap gets bigger and High car car ends up going faster relative to low car then that's good for us if that Gap gets smaller and High car is not going much faster than low car that's bad for us good for low team so while these numbers may change what we're really paying attention to is that time differential in between both cars the day is going to make a difference for the time but that Gap should remain pretty similar until we get quicker no but you all right it's Joby and I once again but now we're switching cars that's right I'm going to sandbag I'm going to ruin your time nice 83 what man that was a pretty good race low car does seem a little bit quicker than High car so that's interesting what woo this car does feel faster holy sh low car is faster definitively it's just it's just faster step is staged they're both staged and they're off had a great reaction time 037 you can tell the confidence he's got in high cars just through the roof oh damn I had the AC on this time I pulled the JY I was like wow why am I so cold and I feel so good out of the AC on I mean so far with the money that's been spent I really think low car is the move starting to notice a trend and that's it low car seems to be faster than High car if you look at the numbers uh low car has has a smattering of 83s and 84s where High car has a bunch of 84s 85s and 86s uh so to take uh the variable that is us out of the equation uh it's time to put a pro in the driver's seat of both cars and see what happens wow Nolan really is like the track Dad it's called being a crew chief crew chief AKA track dad ready ready and go Dam just walking away from me why is that stupid car faster than this one damn M's just a beast come on I got a be her I got to be her Adam just pulled on her why it why would low car be faster this ho big ass no do you want him yeah sure oh my God go bye that's cool man that sounded insane I didn't know what that was smelled weird when it took off too that was smell it that was incredible well Joby it's time to answer the question what question does more expensive mean more better I think today suspension wise I think it doesn't mean more better and sometimes the truth is hard to handle and today that's how I'm feeling we got slower and uh the Delta has shifted in your favor by a lot Yeah Yeah by 6500s of a second feels pretty good feels pretty good I have to say I don't think it does our takeaway today spending a bunch of money on suspension parts on a nearly stock S550 GT not GNA give you a lot of gains arguably reverse gains I didn't really think that this was going to be the case because normally the car stuff that we do around the track with corners and things like that suspension and tires make a huge difference yes absolutely we did have our fastest pass of the entire show so far but for the amount of work we did I don't know and the conditions being different I'm not sure we could say that that was the mods doing it we're not going to reap the benefits of the work that we did today until we add some more power I think that's right this is a little preemptive I think it was really fun though to get more reps that's a big part of what's going on here apart from just the parts that we've installed in the cars there's a lot of you know getting out of your own way getting comfortable with this figuring out how you're going to launch the car how you interface with the car that said today was fun did it go how I wanted it to no is that okay yes join us next week where we will be adding hopefully some more power to these cars with new intakes and exhaust we're going to try to get as much power as we can out of the coyote motor it's going to be a fun one I can't wait to hear that sound oh yeah see you on the next one next week on high low presented by allate we upgrade our intakes and exhaust there's an accident at the office what are you looking at me for you two were the only ones in here for the last couple hours and I know my dog's poop Edgar doesn't even like peanuts and Jimmy enters the pain vortex
