Synology NAS initial setup & Installation using DS412+

**Installing the Synology DSM on a DS4 1/2 Plus Unit**

The installation process of the Synology DSM on a DS4 1/2 plus unit involves several steps. To begin, we need to insert the software disk provided and navigate to the Mac OSX option. We then run the Synology assistant, which should find our device and guide us through the setup process. The assistant will prompt us to download the latest DSM version from the Synology website, which I have already done. This is a crucial step, as it ensures we are using the most up-to-date software for our device.

Next, we need to create an admin account. I've chosen to name my Synology unit "DS4 1/2 plus" to make it easily identifiable among other devices. However, during setup, I encountered an issue with invalid characters in the username field, so I've modified it to simply "ds412+". The setup screen asks us to set up the IP address for the NAS, and I strongly recommend using manual configuration to give a static IP address and default gateway.

After completing these steps, we proceed with installing the DSM on our Synology NAS. This process can take some time, depending on the size of our hard drives and how many volumes are populated. The system will reboot automatically during this process, so please do not interrupt it.

Once the installation is complete, we log in to the device using the admin account. The first step after logging in is to access the Storage Manager, where we need to create a volume. For this example, I'm choosing to use all four disks available on my NAS, which will erase all data on the disk and give us a capacity of approximately 5.4 TB. I've selected the "Hybrid RAID" option, which provides data redundancy by using three hard drives.

The creation of the volume takes some time, so please be patient and let it complete its job. Once the volume is created, we need to create a shared folder so that it's visible on our network. The Storage Manager creates the volume after 45 minutes of processing time.

Next, we need to create another share, specifically for media files. To do this, we go to the File Station and click OK. This allows us to assign permissions to the new folder, which I've chosen to give all users read and write access.

The next step is to configure additional features on our NAS. We can do this by accessing the Control Panel and creating user accounts. I'll create a few user accounts for demonstration purposes later in this article.

We also need to install packages using the Package Center. The available tab allows us to browse and select the packages we'd like to install, such as antivirus software or other utilities that enhance our NAS's functionality.

After completing these steps, our Synology DS4 1/2 plus unit is fully functional, and we can access its features. If I go back to this screen, I'll see an option to connect the device, which allows us to complete the setup process.

**Upcoming Features and In-Depth Review**

In future videos, I plan to cover additional important features offered by this NAS, including more advanced storage management options, data protection features, and software installation procedures. Furthermore, a comprehensive review of the DS4 1/2 plus unit will be published in-depth on my YouTube channel, covering its performance, user interface, and overall value for money.

For now, I hope this video has been helpful in guiding you through the initial setup process of your Synology DS4 1/2 plus unit. Thank you for watching, and I'll see you in my next video.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi there this is Ranjit from tech Tabasco and today we'll be doing the installation initial installation for the Synology nas that's the ds4 one two plus but this installation should be applicable to almost any Synology nas and the things that you need are this analogy disk and the screws that you get and also the hard drive that we are going to install it and the first thing you do is take out this front cover that'll expose us all the four base I have already populated the hard drive so let me just take out one of the drives you just press this clip and just drag it out and this drive base should come out and what you do is take a new hard drive this is a 3.5 standard hard drive and you mount it by screwing forced screws two on this side and two on this side you can actually also use a laptop hard drive if you like and that can also be mounted here once that's done this model the ps4 one two plus can take up to four drives you can actually also make it work with just one time but I strongly advise that to go at least with two types right now for this demo we are going with three drives and now that we have attached this hard drive to our drive what we do is just notice a small arrow over here make sure the arrow that is pointing is on the top and you just take the drive and just slide it in and you do the same for all the drives I have populated one two and three bays this fourth bay is right now empty and once this is done take this front cover and gently put it back and power on this unit don't worry it will take approximately about three or four minutes for powering a talk now we need to do some software installation and take the Synology this and put it in your DVD ROM Drive I'll be showing you the installation procedure using a Mac but will be very similar for Windows also have inserted the software disk that was provided and we will go to the Mac OSX option and we're going to run this Synology assistant the Synology unit is populated with three hard drives that are Western Digital three terabyte drives now I'm going to run the Synology assistant and they should hopefully find us that is station yes it did and and we double-click on the same and we get this setup facade and you need to download the latest DSM version from Synology website I have already done the same this is the BSF version for the ds4 1/2 plus unit it's a pad fight and I just hit next and we need to create a admin account and I'm going to name this Synology unit as the mortal name because I have multiple tasks and by giving the server name the same as the model number it would be easier for me it says invalid character so I'm going to remove the plastic it as ds4 1 2 in this screen you need to set up the IP address for the NASS and I strongly suggest that you use the manual configuration so that you can give a static IP address and the default gateway for me as this and I hit finish and now it's installing the DSM on the Synology nas and this can take quite some time depending upon your hard drive if you have larger hard drives and all the four V's are populated it takes some while so just to wait for a while while it installs the station manager on your Synology nas it has already done installing now and it's just rebooting its going to reboot the system now do not interrupt the NASS let it reboot on its own it's showing that it's writing the configuration file and it says the system has been successfully installed and I can login to the same and I'm logging in and the first thing we need to do is go to the storage manager and here we need to create the volume and I'm going to use the HR option and here I'm going to use all my disks and as it says everything all the data on the disk will be erased and I'm gonna select yes and here it gives us an option to check for bad sectors I strongly recommend that you use the option select the yes option and let this analogy Nass unit do a thorough check on your desk for bad sectors but this can take a couple of hours if you have large discs right now for the demo I'm going to use the no option and it's going to use all the disks that I have in the NASS that's the disk 1 this 2 and this 3 and we're going to use this analogy hybrid raid option that will give us a capacity of about five point four five terabytes and I hit the apply button and now the unit is creating the volume and you can see the status over here let it do its job do not interrupt the process and this can again take a while and after this volume was created we need to just create a shared folder so that that folder will be visible on our network the volume has been created it took about 45 minutes and as this is a Synology hybrid raid we get data redundancy and we have three hard drives that's this one is two and this three out of this three if even one drive completely fails we'll have all our data intact and now the next thing that we need to do is we need to create a shade volume and if you go to the file station it'll prompt us to do that just click OK and here hit this create option and I'm going to name this as media and here we can give permissions I'll give all permissions read and write permissions and our media folder is created and the next thing we need to do this we can also go to the control panel and here you can create user accounts and once that is done click here and go to this package center and go to the available tab and here you can install all the packages that you like install you can install the antivirus cloud station the audio station the download station exit trap and I just want to show you that now the NASS is fully functional and if I go to this link I need to hit this option and connect it right now I just have one user name that's the admin and as you can see we are able to access this media folder so that's it for now for the initial installation of this ds4 1/2 plus unit I'll be making a few more videos covering the various other important features offered by this Nass and also we'll do an in-depth review for the same so stay tuned to my youtube channel I hope you found this video
