The Evolution of Apple's Security Updates: A Minimum of 5 Years is Now Officially Guaranteed
In recent years, there has been a lot of discussion about the lifespan of Apple devices and their corresponding security updates. While many people have questioned whether Apple devices last longer than those from Samsung and Google, it appears that Apple is now taking a more proactive approach to this issue. In fact, Apple has officially stated that they guarantee a minimum of 5 years of security updates for most of their devices. This change in policy is likely to be met with excitement by many users who have been concerned about the security of their devices.
However, it's worth noting that while this new policy may seem like a lot, it's actually not that much different from what Apple has been doing in the past. In fact, if we look at some of the recent updates for older models, such as the iPhone 6s, which launched 9 years ago, it's clear that Apple has consistently delivered security updates and patches to these devices over time. This raises an interesting question: why did it take Apple so long to make this policy change official? It's possible that they were waiting until more of their newer devices had been released before making a public statement.
The Secret Home Router Radio in Apple Devices
Recently, The Verge reported on some interesting findings about the newest Apple devices. Apparently, many of these devices contain a secret home router radio inside them, known as Thread, which is used to connect devices in a smart home environment. This new technology allows for seamless communication between Apple devices and other smart home products, making it easier than ever to create a connected and convenient living space. However, what's surprising is that Apple never announced the presence of this feature in their newer devices.
The Verge had previously speculated that Apple may be planning to use these Thread radios to turn Macs or iPads into home hubs, essentially turning them into central controllers for smart home devices. While we don't know exactly what Apple has planned with this technology, it's clear that it will play a vital role in their future products and services.
A Thieving Spirit Airlines Employee Gets Caught After a Clever Woman Tracks Down Her Stolen Luggage
In a bizarre incident at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, a woman discovered that her luggage had been stolen from her checked bag. The thief, who worked for Spirit Airlines, had taken advantage of the airline's lax security measures to steal expensive electronics and jewelry from the woman's suitcase. But what made this case even more remarkable was the clever way the woman tracked down her stolen items.
Using Apple's Find My app on her iPhone and AirTag, she discovered that one of her devices had been moved 15 minutes away from the airport to a house in a nearby neighborhood. Without hesitation, she paid a visit to the address listed for the device and found not only the thief but also a stash of stolen goods. The police were called, and after investigating, they discovered that the thief worked for a company that operated retail stores inside the airport.
However, the situation took a turn for the worse when Spirit Airlines responded with an offer of reimbursement to the woman as a "courtesy." This response was met with widespread criticism, with many accusing the airline of being unsympathetic and unresponsive. In fact, some people have taken to advising others not to fly with Spirit due to their questionable customer service record. While this incident highlights the risks associated with traveling by air, it also shows just how important it is to be vigilant when it comes to tracking down stolen items using Apple's Find My app.
The Importance of Paying Attention to Your Devices
In light of recent events, including the theft of a woman's luggage at Spirit Airlines and the discovery of Thread radios in newer Apple devices, it's more important than ever to pay attention to your own devices. Apple's Find My app is an invaluable tool for tracking down lost or stolen items, and using it can make all the difference in getting your belongings back.
So, what can you do to protect yourself from theft? Firstly, always keep a close eye on your devices, especially when traveling. Use Apple's Find My app regularly to check if any of your devices have been moved to an unfamiliar location. Additionally, consider using AirTags or other tracking devices to keep tabs on your belongings.
By taking these precautions and being proactive about device security, you can reduce the risk of theft and ensure that your valuables remain safe. Whether you're flying with Spirit Airlines or simply looking for ways to stay organized, Apple's Find My app is an essential tool in today's digital age.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwhat's up guys my name is Brandon and welcome back to Apple weekly in this episode we're going to discuss what to expect from IOS 18 and WWDC on Monday why iMessage is turning into WhatsApp spotify's price hike a crazy air tag story and much more and if you want to stay updated with everything going on in the world of Apple be sure to hit that subscribe button down below you do not want to miss next week's videos on iOS 18 okay so we have to start with some more iOS 18 News because we just got an update from Bloomberg smart Gman about Apple's new AI system that they're going to call Apple intelligence so AI it's still AI but it's not artificial intelligence it's Apple intelligence and that is the most Apple thing I've ever heard so I believe it he says that they're planning to integrate AI into as many applications as possible but these new capabilities will be opt in so you will not be forced to use these AI features plus they're going to be labeled as beta and some of these features and some of these models are going to require the iPhone 15 Pro and newer and he goes on to say that Apple's AI features will be powered by its own technology and tools from open AI so it's going to be a combination of both of them but I'm sure since it's Apple the big focus is going to be on privacy now notice how he mentions open Ai and that's because we have more confirmation that Apple's deal with open AI to bring chat GPT to the iPhone has been completed now neither company has publicly announced this so that makes me think that we might actually be seeing an announcement at WWDC on Monday and if that happens that will be huge because we've heard for months now to not expect this announcement at the event it's going to come sometime later in the year but now we've been hearing tons of you know details about this so I would not be surprised to see that announced on Monday and what's interesting is that Apple might not be only using open Ai and chat PT he says though Apple remains in talks with Google about using Gemini and its devices Apple reached an agreement with open aai first in the end Apple may offer a number of thirdparty chatbots but it's negotiating the deals on a caseby Case basis Apple picked open AI because they got better business terms than Google was offering and apple believes that open ai's technology is the best available on the market and another reason they chose open AI is because integrating Google AI into the iPhone might give the impression that Apple's biggest technology rival had beat it in a vital new area and then we also got some details on iOS 18's mail application and some of the AI features it's going to be getting such as autoc categorization of emails based on the text contained with in them also improved search and smart replies that use AI to create replies on the fly so basically a lot of features that Gmail has currently are going to be coming to the Apple built-in mail application and then I mentioned in the intro how apple is trying to be like WhatsApp and it looks like we have more WhatsApp like features coming in iOS 18 because a new report says that iOS 18 will finally let you react to messages with any Emoji so very similar to Whatsapp Instagram Snapchat pretty much all these other applications you're going to be able to do that with imessage now which a lot of people are going to love now we're also hearing that a new application is coming in iOS 18 and this comes from Mark German as well he says we're going to see a password manager to compete with one password and last pass he says the new app is powered by the iCloud keychain a long existing Apple service that can sync passwords and account information between different devices the app features a list of user logins and splits details into different categories such as accounts Wi-Fi networks and pass Keys the software will also work on the Vision Pro headsets and Windows computers and it can support Verification codes and serve as an authentication app similar to Google Authenticator so hopefully this new passwords application will completely eliminate the need for like a Google authenticator or any of these other authenticator applications and it's going to be nice to finally have passwords as a standalone application that's something I've requested for years now and there were a lot of other iOS 18 leaks that came out over the past couple of days but I will be making a whole new video on iOS 18 features to expect the day before WWDC so on Sunday expect that video with even more expected iOS 18 featur now also this week we saw Spotify hike their prices and now it's more expensive than Apple music despite not having spatial audio or lossless audio so this is the second time that Spotify has raised its prices for the US Premium plan in the past 12 months which is insane so it's now $1.99 a month compared to apple music's $10.99 a month and for the family plan it's a $3 difference between Spotify and apple music now I know that Spotify Premium gets you access to 15 hours of audiobooks and apple music does not give you that however I still think that Apple music is the Superior Service here because the sound quality is better I like the visuals better and you know just disclaimer I have a subscription to both Spotify Premium and to Apple music but I prefer Apple music and I I can see a lot of people kind of canceling their Spotify after this second price hike and just going over to Apple music but I could be wrong what do you think do you think Spotify Premium or apple music is better and speaking of prices there's a new promotion for the Apple card right now at Ace Hardware I actually just recently took advantage of this you can now get 6% back for a limited time so if you needed to get any type of equipment for around the house now is the time to go to Ace Hardware with your Apple card to get that 6% back so you know how the New York Times has Wordle and how Apple news has the crossword puzzles and all the other different puzzle applications well even Uber is now getting into the mini games sector because they are planning to add mini games to the iPhone app to play during a ride and it's crazy because LinkedIn actually just recently added games to their platform as well now Uber of all people is adding a game section to their application that that's a big money maker as we've seen with the New York Times but I just thought that was pretty funny and speaking of cars this week rivan announced their new r1s and r1t vehicles these are the refreshed models and they now support apple car keys for unlocking the car doors with the wallet application and it works for the Apple watch as well so if you hold your Apple watch or your phone up to the doors it will unlock the car if you're an apple arcade subscriber some new games just dropped on Thursday so rabids Legends of the Multiverse return to Monkey Island plus Tomb of the Mask plus and fabulous wedding disaster Plus have just been released and we also got an announcement from Apple that these are the games coming in July in early July and speaking of games we also saw the launch of Assassin's Creed Mirage this week so this is available only for the iPhone 15 Pro Series and of course the M series iPads as well so this is going to be a pretty expensive application and also a pretty large application so 10.5 GB is the initial install and you can see it is currently 50% off for a limited time you can play a free trial and then you will have to pay after that okay so I'm not going to mention iOS 17.5 or iOS 17.5 point1 in this video because we've talked about that enough and there's really absolutely nothing new and nothing to talk about with those software versions so I'm going to save you the time and the repetitive content so we're going to talk about what to expect next so next up is going to be iOS 18 on June 10th now I know a lot of people have been wondering where is IOS 17.6 beta 1 because we've been expecting that for the past couple of weeks but it just simply has not come and I don't think anybody at this point even cares about 17.6 beta 1 since iOS 18 is very likely to you know keep all the same devices supported that we're on iOS 17 so once iOS 18 drops on Monday I don't think anybody's going to care or even remember that 17.6 was a thing but you know we could be seeing 17.6 beta one sometime next week potentially on Tuesday the 11th or on Wednesday the 12th but I do not think we're going to see it on Monday I think Monday is going to be all about iOS 18 beta 1 now I did also want to mention that if you have not been on the beta train for a long time how it typically goes is that Developers get access to iOS 18 beta 1 for the first month public beta testers do not typically get the first beta until about a month after developers now the good news is that the developer accounts are free now so you can get access to developer beta 1 without needing to Pirate it or pay the $100 a year you just have to you know basically uh be signed up as a developer which if you already have the betas now then you don't have to do anything you should see the prompt when iOS 18 beta 1 gets released and I'll I'll talk more about that in the live stream on Monday when it actually gets pushed out to everybody we'll we'll walk through how to get it on your device now speaking of WWDC on Monday can we expect to see any new hardware at this event because if you remember early on we saw reports that Apple's going to be releasing a new Apple TV in the first half of 2024 that's what Mark Gman and Bloomberg said for a while but now he's going back on that and saying to not expect any hardware at the event now that doesn't mean that we're not going to see anything you know not every rumor turns out to be true but we're not expecting to see any hardware at this event I don't think we're going to see any Maxs I think if we see anything at this event we're probably just going to see like a minor refresh to some product I don't even know what it could be so you know an Apple TV is possible a homepod as possible maybe a Mac is possible but at this point I'm not really holding my breath for any products to be announced I think Apple knows and the whole world knows at this point that Ai and software is going to be the focus and that's going to be the only thing that people are tuning in to this event for but as far as the next Big Apple event which is going to be the iPhone 16 launch and the Apple Watch series 10 launch we are now hearing that the Apple Watch series 10 or the Apple watch x whatever it's going to be called is going to have a blood pressure sensor and one of the main watch OS 11 features is going to be quote improved blood pressure data management so German says the health app is getting some upgrades including improved blood pressure data management and preparation for future Apple watches to have hypertension detection and speaking of the Apple watch the Dexcom G7 now lets you monitor realtime blood sugar on the Apple Watch Once you have it paired so if you have a Dexcom G7 and you have an Apple Watch you'll now be able to see in real time the blood sugar levels from your Apple watch which is awesome if you are a diabetic now also this week Apple officially labeled the iPhone 5S as an obsolete device which means the Apple Stores no longer offer repairs for that device and they also now classify the iPod Touch 6th Generation as vintage which that just means that more than 5 years have passed since Apple stopped selling that device and then speaking of years of support we also saw some pretty interesting news this week about Apple promising 5 years of iPhone security updates so this came out for the first time ever from Apple and this was due to a UK legal requirements Apple had to reveal its commitment to how long they're basically going to offer software updates and they said that they're going to commit to a minimum of 5 years of iPhone software updates from the date a device is released now you might be saying that's not a lot we've seen a lot more than that from Apple and that would be true and actually if you look at Samsung and Google devices they currently guarantee a minimum of 7 years of security updates so on paper you would think that Samsung and Google devices last longer than iPhones but it's much different in the real world because if you take a look at just earlier this year actually I believe it was in March we saw an update for the iPhone 6s which launched 9 years ago so Apple typically under promises and over delivers but it's been pretty interesting to see apple officially come out and classify how long a device should last at a minimum which now we know is a minimum of 5 years but it's probably going to be more for pretty much every device also this week we saw an interesting report from The Verge that shows that many of Apple's recent devices have a secret home r radio inside so this is a unannounced thread radio that's inside of the latest iPad Pro iPad Air MacBook Air MacBook Pro and also the new M3 IMAX now we already know that thread is the wireless protocol for matter which is how all of our devices connect together in a smart home but Apple never announced that these products that came out last year and into this year had thread built inside and The Verge had a theory that said it's possible apple is planning to turn your Mac or iPad into a home hub but iPads used to be home hubs and the company discontinued that capability for its new Apple home architecture but those iPads did not have thread radios so we don't exactly know what Apple's big plan is for having thread radios and pretty much every one of their latest devices but it seems like in the future they will play a pretty vital role in whatever Apple has planned and then just as tradition we have another crazy air tag story so this time a woman in the Fort Lauderdale Hollywood and International Airport stood at baggage claim with everybody else waiting on her luggage to arrive from her Spirit Airlines flight that was her first mistake but after waiting for over 2 hours it never showed up she said that she always carries her pink hard shell suitcase on board with her but this time she was forced to check it and inside that suitcase was a gold mine for thieves it had a Macbook two apple watches an iPad jewelry and designer clothes and as you can probably assume all of those items were stolen when a spirit employee was caught on video taking the suitcase to the back stealing all of the goods and then closing it back up and placing it in a clear bag to be shipped back to the victim's home but back in the terminal and unaware of the theft Spirit Airlines employees told the lady not to worry and that they'll send the luggage back to her house so the next morning rolls around and her Apple watch has started popping up in the find my application at a random person's house 15 minutes from the airport so since she had a test that day and needed her MacBook she paid this house a visit on her own now when she arrived she saw suitcases all over the place so she started taking video and called 911 so once the police arrived a Broward County detective put that address of that house through an internal airport database and found the thief he worked for a company that operates retail stores inside of the airport so he didn't necessarily work directly with Spirit but by the time police arrived arrived to the house to get the stolen goods back they realized they had already gotten rid of the items the thief already sold the item so it's definitely not his first or second time doing this however he was arrested and charged with Grand Theft but the police never recovered her items but it gets worse because Spirit Airlines gave a statement on the situation they gave a statement to the news saying quote we issued a reimbursement check to the guest as a courtesy even though we are not currently aware of any evidence that any Spirit employee was involved I'm sorry what but giving somebody their money back as a courtesy even if your employee even it wasn't a direct employee to you this was your airline and your situation so to say that they offered compensation as a courtesy to the customer is terrible that is an awful response that should be a mandatory thing not a courtesy so yeah we already know that Spirit Airlines is terrible and I would recommend not flying Spirit at all costs but this just proves yet again why it's so good to have even if you don't have an air tag necessarily it's so good to always pay attention to the find my application if you are missing an Apple Watch an iPhone any Apple product that has fine my built-in because it could lead to the thief getting arrested and hopefully getting your item or items back so that's the episode I hope you guys enjoyed this one if you did I would appreciate if you give it a thumbs up and I will see you guys next weekwhat's up guys my name is Brandon and welcome back to Apple weekly in this episode we're going to discuss what to expect from IOS 18 and WWDC on Monday why iMessage is turning into WhatsApp spotify's price hike a crazy air tag story and much more and if you want to stay called 911 so once the police arrived a Broward County detective put that address of that house through an internal airport database and found the thief he worked for a company that operates retail stores inside of the airport so he didn't necessarily work directly with Spirit but by the time police arrived arrived to the house to get the stolen goods back they realized they had already gotten rid of the items the thief already sold the item so it's definitely not his first or second time doing this however he was arrested and charged with Grand Theft but the police never recovered her items but it gets worse because Spirit Airlines gave a statement on the situation they gave a statement to the news saying quote we issued a reimbursement check to the guest as a courtesy even though we are not currently aware of any evidence that any Spirit employee was involved I'm sorry what but giving somebody their money back as a courtesy even if your employee even it wasn't a direct employee to you this was your airline and your situation so to say that they offered compensation as a courtesy to the customer is terrible that is an awful response that should be a mandatory thing not a courtesy so yeah we already know that Spirit Airlines is terrible and I would recommend not flying Spirit at all costs but this just proves yet again why it's so good to have even if you don't have an air tag necessarily it's so good to always pay attention to the find my application if you are missing an Apple Watch an iPhone any Apple product that has fine my built-in because it could lead to the thief getting arrested and hopefully getting your item or items back so that's the episode I hope you guys enjoyed this one if you did I would appreciate if you give it a thumbs up and I will see you guys next week\n"
