Turbo Swap & Tune! Making my R32 Skyline FASTER

The Thrill of Turbocharging: A Journey of Discovery and Fine-Tuning

As I sat in my shop, surrounded by the familiar hum of engines and the faint scent of gasoline, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and trepidation. My latest project, a high-performance vehicle with a brand-new turbo setup, was finally ready to be unleashed on the track. The team had been working tirelessly to fine-tune the engine, making adjustments and tweaks until everything felt just right.

One of the first things I noticed when I got behind the wheel was the sound of the turbocharger spinning up. It's a sound that's both familiar and intimidating, like a roaring beast awakened from its slumber. As I eased off the throttle, the sound grew softer, muffled almost imperceptibly by the exhaust system. But as soon as I hit the gas again, the sound returned with a vengeance, a cacophony of whine and whoosh that was both exhilarating and humbling.

The team had told me to expect a few teething issues with the new setup, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer intensity of the turbocharger's power delivery. It's like hitting a wall of pure, unadulterated energy - your foot gets stuck on the floor, the car starts to lift off the ground, and all you can do is hold on for dear life. But that's what makes it so exciting, right?

As I began to drive around the block, I could feel the weight of the turbocharger behind me, like a constant companion pulling me forward. The power was there, all right - but it wasn't just about raw speed; it was about finesse, too. The car seemed to respond with a kind of intuition, as if it knew exactly what I wanted and was working tirelessly to deliver it.

One thing that struck me was the relatively short amount of time it took to fine-tune the engine to my liking. Jamie, the resident Street tuning expert, had worked his magic in no time, coaxing out just the right balance of power and responsiveness from the engine. It's a testament to his skill that I barely even noticed any issues at all - aside from one minor quibble about fuel enrichment, which was easily sorted.

But despite the smooth operation, there were still some lingering questions in my mind. How would it hold up on the track? Would it get overwhelmed by heat and stress? And most pressing of all: what did it feel like to be behind the wheel?

As I laced up my helmet and prepared for a few laps around the track, I couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation. This was going to be a trial run - an opportunity to test the limits of the engine and see how it would react under pressure. And as I climbed into the cockpit and fired up the engines, I could feel my heart pounding in my chest.

The first few laps were nerve-wracking, to say the least. The car was so responsive, so eager to please - but also so powerful that it felt like a wild animal, almost out of control at times. It took every ounce of skill and experience to tame it, to coax it into submission and get a feel for what it could really do.

But as I settled into the rhythm of the track, something strange happened. The car began to feel...familiar. Like an extension of myself, rather than a separate entity that I was merely controlling. It was as if all the fine-tuning and tweaking had paid off, and now the engine was singing in harmony with my every thought.

I took a deep breath, focused on the road ahead, and pushed hard for the next lap. The car responded eagerly, its power surging through me like a river of pure adrenaline. It was exhilarating, yet somehow also strangely comforting - like an old friend that I'd been waiting to see again.

As I finally pulled back into the pits, exhausted but exhilarated, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. The car had come together beautifully, its various components working in harmony like a well-oiled machine. And as for me - well, let's just say that I'd found my calling.

The Thrill of Turbocharging: A Journey of Discovery

But the story doesn't end there. As it turns out, I wasn't the only one who was excited to put this new turbo setup through its paces. My friend Jimmy, a fellow car enthusiast with a passion for all things automotive, had been watching from the sidelines, eager to get his hands on the car and see how it would perform.

"Hey, man - I need you to take me for a spin," he said, his eyes shining with excitement. "I've got some ideas about how to fine-tune this thing even further."

And so, with Jamie at the wheel, we set off into the unknown, ready to push the car to its limits and see what it would do. The next few hours were a blur of speed, noise, and adrenaline - as we hurtled around the track, pushing the car to its very limits and testing the boundaries of what was possible.

It was exhilarating, in the best possible way. We laughed and shouted, our voices lost in the din of the engine as we tore around the corners and surged through the straights. And when we finally pulled back into the pits, exhausted but exhilarated, I knew that this was just the beginning - the start of a long and thrilling journey with my new turbocharged friend by my side.

The Future is Now

As I sat in my shop, surrounded by the familiar hum of engines and the faint scent of gasoline, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for what the future held. The new turbo setup had been a resounding success - a testament to the team's hard work and dedication, and a harbinger of even greater things to come.

But for now, at least, it was time to take a step back and appreciate the beauty of the present moment. The thrill of turbocharging was more than just about raw power or adrenaline-fueled excitement - it was about connection, too. Connection with the engine, with the car, and with the very road itself.

As I put on my helmet and prepared for our next lap around the track, I felt a sense of gratitude for this incredible machine, and for all the amazing people who had helped me bring it to life. It was going to be a wild ride - but I was ready.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enmorning guys it's a beautiful day out I think the high today is only like 77 degrees a little humid but I think it should be good weather to tune our 32 so today we're actually gonna play with some turbo stuff on the r32 right now I have a gen 2 Garrett GTX 30 71 on it with a 6-3 AR hot side and what we're gonna be doing today is changing the hot side and I'll kind of explain why we're changing it what I hope to accomplish and what we can probably expect with it so I'm excited I've been working on side by side for like the past two days so I'm excited to do something we're actually get to enjoy the results I am curious how crazy I'm going to need to go and change this hot side hopefully I can get away with leaving the center section on it's gonna be my goal which may be possible if I can get a wrench in there on those little bolts I think it might be doable so she havin a nice view man there I think I'm gonna have to take off that water fitting to get to that bowl but maybe not we'll see I think I decided I'm just gonna take it out and make it easier so if you guys have been following the skyline build you'll know that there's two issues that I've been combating well one not really combating but one issue that's been a big problem with this car since day one and that's been heat management if you notice a lot of the paint on the hood has been yellowed a lot of paint down here has been yellowed and this cars always just produced a ton of heat and one of my hypotheses behind that is that maybe well most more than likely I'm creating way too much back pressure so that car makes about 600 horsepower on a 30 71 which is maxing it out and I've been on a 6-3 AR so if you aren't familiar with turbo talk here's a great example on the Left we have a 6-3 AR and then on the right we have an 8 - AR so the only real difference this hot side is a little bit bigger and what it's gonna allow was your exhaust gases to flow a little bit better so when you're making more power and you're pushing higher numbers you're not choking the engine out so I think with what I've been doing I've been choking the engine now and by doing that I've been creating a lot of back pressure thus a lot of heat now the reason I had a small AR for drifting I care way more about having that low end torque and getting quick spool but when an engine is unhappy and you have a ton of back pressure sometimes you actually don't even lose that much spool at all when you go up to a bigger AR so we might see a loss and from 0 to 500 rpm as my guess with this but another thing that we're gonna gain from it if you remember on my Dyna graphs for this car we usually make around 600 wheel and then the last thousand to 2,000 rpm it kind of dips off and makes about a hundred wheel less I think with this bigger AR we'll be able to hold that steady power level which you didn't though for drifting doesn't really matter that much since once you get the torque and the wheels are spinning it's going as a street car it's gonna be a lot faster because we'll be in that power band where we drive it and on the drag strip it'll put down faster numbers so we shouldn't be putting much more stress on the drivetrain since the torque number will probably stay flat but would be making a lot more peak power and the car should be a lot happier because we'll just be able to breathe so I'm gonna start pulling that turbo off after I have my bacon egg and cheese and then I'll throw it on go get this thing tuned and should be a cool example of switching a RS pulling off the turbos pretty self-explanatory I gotta pull the lines got a pull clamp one thing that is smart to do if you ever have a setup like this with v bands and stuff that can be clocked is to make a couple little Mark's just to make sure that you can remember the orientation that stuff was in I'm also gonna take a couple photos just so I remember how lines are ran and stuff but I'm just going to put up a time lapse because I like to focus and get in the zone and listen to music when I'm doing stuff that's a little bit more tedious so I'm gonna do that mark all my lines to make sure I remember where they go and then we'll touch base once I get it off all right now that I got the turbo off how'd say probably took me about 30 minutes just taking my time to and things that I've made note of one my turbo gasket was actually broken I didn't really hear much of an exhaust leak but it is possible it was leaking a little bit and losing a little bit of spool from that when I put the new one on I have a new gasket for it so that'll be okay another cool thing that's new on this setup that Alberto did he put an aien fitting on the bottom of the hot side or sorry on the bottom of the center cartridge so you don't have to get in there with those two little Alan's from underneath and a maid servicing it way easier because all I have to do is undo a quick little a on line there so I'm gonna pull this hot side off and then ya swap it out one make some marking trisko so I can remember making my toolbox look good that's cool like new things cool let's dink play them I'm excited for you to feel the difference so I'm a little nervous you're a little crazy why what I do what's so crazy making all this power driving down the road clutch kicking okay it's not a lot bigger I mean it's this is different so all the dimensions are exactly the same except like like everything will still fit normal see how many coffees you have today guy just one I remember I was this clock defeated some like this Oh God I take a picture little picture good yeah all right like this you see how I was like kind of like shadow doing the plate so I didn't have to like pull the fittings off yeah and now so I'll start it on one area and then I can just rotate it and then get it in I thought that was ghetto until you took out the pry bar then I was like okay I wish I filmed it I don't know I wasn't throwing the turbo on the ground he goes what do you say I really don't want to hit this on anything as you're swinging it and hitting it into the ground more surgery so another thing I'm we're doing before we go to tune when we started cranking up the boost I the wastegate star blown open so you can usually only about double what your spring pressures and the starts kind of bleeding off I think I've got a pretty soft spring in this so I'm gonna go probably about two or three pounds stiffer I should do the trick your pink wastegate yeah it used to be red it used to be so the spring combo I had was actually only for 14 and a half pounds so as we were getting up over 30 we were starting to run out so we're gonna switch over to a combo where my gate pressure will be closer to 17 pounds just color matching the springs to the little guide and then we should be set I definitely been taking my time I haven't been doing this in a rush by any means about two and a half hours we got everything all back together I went over a lot of the clamps and lines to and added a new coupler new vibrant clamp well two new vibrant claims and a new vibrant coupler over some cheap one that I had before to try to prevent any sort of boost leaks or anything from happening in the future I give you the only thing left I have to do is tighten this one little line and we should be good to start a real quick and make sure everything's good and then I'll just have to bleed it do a quick boost leak test and we should be ready to take it to the dyno I'm kind of nervous which is dumb because I shouldn't change with a turbo but I don't know it's been a while since I've started this car got decent voltage turn signals on let's see if she starts I'm pregnant once more neutral a little bit less turbo spool at idle probably need some revs to get that thing spinning a little more now sounds healthy I don't hear any weeks either I think that exhaust casket leak was making more noise than I originally thought I was not added like exhaust leak but I never really saw it so it's hard to say see how she responds to some revs seems pretty responsive still that isn't bothering me making me jump start his car and use my jump box and and the car I'm a soul let's see I don't just try starting this car for about cold minutes let's see why wouldn't it start there's something unplugged Adam oh yeah you got to hook the air compressor back up if you wanted to start you have me in a rush to mini truck and it starts raining yeah I'm gonna push the car out and gonna move it back here so I shut them I love all my blades me and so you uh you left a coupler on you're trying to Cletus this and run a car through a you know it's valve stem I've actually brought a car before like this well not this one I guess know what a guy my voltage is dropping my fuel pressure is wrong and then thanks for wasting our time 2019 Tommy you know I love you so much to me all day about some box all right I have a gift for you it's for you dude it's from LG MFG yeah dude it's gonna be good better be excited as heck shop banners shop manners manners are in here well since is my shop now I figured we're gonna cover every inch of wall with shop we've got different sizes and shapes and colors wait open one of these up see how nice there you'll like them I promise yeah my favorite I know I know was just for you okay yeah well we got a little guy's name we got big guys yeah so we actually what are they called no no a bib for when I'm eating lobster are you seeking lobster with these on Friday we can wear em to the casino wait no I want to show you the big one I feel like this one is the heaviest one now this one is look at me this one is we sold these at Ft and they killed it it's actually really good look at that one sick right what well you can hang them in your room on your mom's car do they're nice though thank you film these are tell me about the quality I mean very impressive at least an 8 out of 10 it's pretty good right yeah this is it great look at this so wait you know these are available now guys link in description you can so where can I put all these in the shop wherever you want wherever your long legs can hang them all right but just not on any of my vehicles no I won't put them in vehicles that's a nice spot right there for one one in the showroom so at night you can see it - yeah it's good idea well we could put them on the backdrop behind the showroom like on the black curtain yeah I'll be sick I have a lot your banners @lz MFG is that the website yeah yeah thanks dog I want to give a massive shoutout to LZ MFG for sponsoring this video sponsoring our air conditioning that he keeps turning down which means up if you can't figure that out what basically grants house going on got all the cars pulled in anything is the first time we've ever seen all three of the Evo's together just as a reminder we are called the fives guys and this is our current team of Evo's that we like to battle on the mountain perhaps ok thanks bye now even though the new that different the car needs to be retune to run properly cuz the thing is it's gonna see different loads different air pressures at different rpm now so it's gonna be different fueling however I think it's close enough to where it's still drivable I'm just gonna keep it very very low throttle and we'll drive over to Wallingford so Jamie can tune it I'm curious so how the school is going to be even without a tune this sounds pretty responsive it sounds a little bit different - I'm already impressed we'll see if you guys can hear its spooling up quite a bit just in the parking lot it seems like the bigger AR might echo the exhaust a little bit more like it's letting the gas and choking a little bit less so it's muffled less oh yeah it's still very responsive hear that that's the load thing I was talking about so we'll downshift real quick we're already like probably were gonna hit full booster on the four grand which is very similar to what it was I think before yeah I was about to say before it's always nerve-racking with a new turbo setup still you smell decoding being burned off and it smelled like something's on fire the real telling factor will be when we put this car in the same dynamic overlay dinocras that's when we get hi dad Tommy inside check back at the shop they got nervous for a second the baby I put this same six 3ar back on because I had another new one but I checked and we're good that's a good time because I was very very nervous that I make the car too laggy and the fact that it feels it literally identical is a good sign that is still great a good news or bad news will know bad news first Teddy's not gonna be around tonight so we can't get on the dyno which means we can't reach in for the new turbo which I'm kinda bummed about but Jamie's really really good at Street tuning so we're just going to tune the car at gate pressure because there's an event I want to try this weekend that way you could start the event and then we'll make our powerful actually this strange man started telling us and I don't really recognize him his face looked really funny oh there was a back entrance what is on your face dude I'm mad I shaved mine I didn't even recognize you tailgating me what are you doing when I'm daily driving a truck you know I really had that make it happen yeah typical Wallingford guy yes man hi hey how are ya mr. hoonigan dude I miss the snow on the Ignite yeah almost out of it my cars running a little rich like eight lambda the whole way here it smells like it yeah give me room that was great this is my shop pen Henry he's a trash bandit we gave me feed him beef jerky he's pretty adorable would you like to pay but you know what's even cuter at the 30 and this gorgeous man look at this gingerbread lookin ass I swear ever ever since I moved into his house he's just been following me around everywhere he doesn't trust me better friends in you yeah I don't believe that no one's runs oh crap I met Jimmy I meant to me okay thank you good it's here at the trash man his name yo Henry I gotta make Chloe for your dog oh you scared him with your doesn't like gingers ready for this Duggar gets a jerky now yeah so Jamie and I cruise around the block got this thing tuned up it really didn't need that many adjustments I was pretty on point the one thing it didn't need a little bit of fuel up top the trip was a little bit more efficient and it's not having as much back pressure up there so it breeds a little bit more power wise uh doesn't feel that much faster on gate it's hard to tell because I don't really drive the car and gate that much but I will see the spools almost identical and it feels like it comes on harder which is pretty tight but the key news is although we didn't get the opportunity to go on the dyno Jamie is actually gonna come out to the event that I'm going to and he's gonna help me dial it in on the track in case it has any adjustments that it needs but overall everything feels really good on it so I'm pretty happy I'm pretty excited about it and I'll do a couple of pulls for you guys just to show you kind of it does sound different so that's cool so I'm excited this should be the start up really good setup okay first I can pull mind you the cars not gonna say because I'm on some gnarly Archer blades right now so if it is it's about spinning it's fast but no wonder if you guys we have a difference find you I don't have no left shift on right now and the drifts setting so there's a little lag between the gears like on and off throttle on the track really matter but with an Olaf chef no just a boom boom this takes to be a rocketship so here's the third kind of rolling universe I'd say full summer around like 42 so that's gonna be it for today that's far we're gonna do some Evo stuff because I haven't finally taken that thing on the track too so I just wanna give a fashion shout out to my new girlfriend Bailey she's once back home if you guys don't already seen her at my Instagram stories she's really beautiful it means a lotmorning guys it's a beautiful day out I think the high today is only like 77 degrees a little humid but I think it should be good weather to tune our 32 so today we're actually gonna play with some turbo stuff on the r32 right now I have just in the parking lot it seems like the bigger AR might echo the exhaust a little bit more like it's letting the gas and choking a little bit less so it's muffled less oh yeah it's still very responsive hear that that's the load thing I was talking about so we'll downshift real quick we're already like probably were gonna hit full booster on the four grand which is very similar to what it was I think before yeah I was about to say before it's always nerve-racking with a new turbo setup still you smell decoding being burned off and it smelled like something's on fire the real telling factor will be when we put this car in the same dynamic overlay dinocras that's when we get hi dad Tommy inside check back at the shop they got nervous for a second the baby I put this same six 3ar back on because I had another new one but I checked and we're good that's a good time because I was very very nervous that I make the car too laggy and the fact that it feels it literally identical is a good sign that is still great a good news or bad news will know bad news first Teddy's not gonna be around tonight so we can't get on the dyno which means we can't reach in for the new turbo which I'm kinda bummed about but Jamie's really really good at Street tuning so we're just going to tune the car at gate pressure because there's an event I want to try this weekend that way you could start the event and then we'll make our powerful actually this strange man started telling us and I don't really recognize him his face looked really funny oh there was a back entrance what is on your face dude I'm mad I shaved mine I didn't even recognize you tailgating me what are you doing when I'm daily driving a truck you know I really had that make it happen yeah typical Wallingford guy yes man hi hey how are ya mr. hoonigan dude I miss the snow on the Ignite yeah almost out of it my cars running a little rich like eight lambda the whole way here it smells like it yeah give me room that was great this is my shop pen Henry he's a trash bandit we gave me feed him beef jerky he's pretty adorable would you like to pay but you know what's even cuter at the 30 and this gorgeous man look at this gingerbread lookin ass I swear ever ever since I moved into his house he's just been following me around everywhere he doesn't trust me better friends in you yeah I don't believe that no one's runs oh crap I met Jimmy I meant to me okay thank you good it's here at the trash man his name yo Henry I gotta make Chloe for your dog oh you scared him with your doesn't like gingers ready for this Duggar gets a jerky now yeah so Jamie and I cruise around the block got this thing tuned up it really didn't need that many adjustments I was pretty on point the one thing it didn't need a little bit of fuel up top the trip was a little bit more efficient and it's not having as much back pressure up there so it breeds a little bit more power wise uh doesn't feel that much faster on gate it's hard to tell because I don't really drive the car and gate that much but I will see the spools almost identical and it feels like it comes on harder which is pretty tight but the key news is although we didn't get the opportunity to go on the dyno Jamie is actually gonna come out to the event that I'm going to and he's gonna help me dial it in on the track in case it has any adjustments that it needs but overall everything feels really good on it so I'm pretty happy I'm pretty excited about it and I'll do a couple of pulls for you guys just to show you kind of it does sound different so that's cool so I'm excited this should be the start up really good setup okay first I can pull mind you the cars not gonna say because I'm on some gnarly Archer blades right now so if it is it's about spinning it's fast but no wonder if you guys we have a difference find you I don't have no left shift on right now and the drifts setting so there's a little lag between the gears like on and off throttle on the track really matter but with an Olaf chef no just a boom boom this takes to be a rocketship so here's the third kind of rolling universe I'd say full summer around like 42 so that's gonna be it for today that's far we're gonna do some Evo stuff because I haven't finally taken that thing on the track too so I just wanna give a fashion shout out to my new girlfriend Bailey she's once back home if you guys don't already seen her at my Instagram stories she's really beautiful it means a lot\n"
