The Apple Studio Display: A Game-Changing UltraWide Monitor for Creatives and Productivity Enthusiasts
I've had the pleasure of spending time with the new Apple Studio Display, and I must say it's been an incredible experience. The display is massive, measuring 40 inches diagonally, which makes it perfect for multitasking and getting work done in a comfortable and immersive environment.
One of my favorite features of this monitor is its ability to seamlessly switch between multiple apps and tasks with ease. With the Studio Display, I can effortlessly navigate between Apple Notes, a browser, email, my to-do list, Mission Control, and even Final Cut Pro, all without needing to physically move from one app to another. The right arrow key on the keyboard allows me to slide over to the next desktop, where I can access Final Cut Pro in glorious detail.
The monitor's display is also a highlight, showcasing Apple's commitment to delivering excellent color accuracy and a wide range of features that make it perfect for creative professionals. With its Thunderbolt connection, I'm able to take advantage of multiple external devices at once, making it ideal for tasks like photo editing and video production. The Studio Display comes calibrated right from the factory, ensuring that colors are accurate and consistent.
As a photographer who works with Lightroom, I can attest to the monitor's excellent color representation and image quality. Being able to see my entire library spread out across the display is incredibly satisfying, and the colors look vibrant and lifelike thanks to Apple's attention to detail. Whether I'm working on a photo edit or simply browsing through my library, this monitor makes it easy to do so with ease.
I've also noticed that having a larger screen like this has helped me stay focused and productive for longer periods of time. With the right arrow key allowing me to slide over to the next desktop without having to physically move from one app to another, I can work in short bursts of energy followed by short breaks – it's really nice to be able to do so.
One area where I'd like to see improvement is in terms of brightness. At 500 nits, while still quite bright for a monitor of this size, I've found myself wishing there was more. However, this is a minor quibble compared to the sheer amount of value that comes with owning this display.
The curve on this monitor has been another pleasant surprise – it's subtle but noticeable, making it easier to see what I'm doing at any given time. And although the built-in speakers are decent, if not particularly impressive, they're a nice touch in terms of decluttering my workspace and reducing the need for external speakers.
Another consideration is the lack of a built-in webcam – some users might see this as a drawback in today's remote work era, but I'm curious to see how Apple's Continuity Camera feature will perform on this setup. For now, though, it's not a deal-breaker for me.
In conclusion, while the price tag may be steep at $1,799, I can confidently say that the Apple Studio Display is worth considering for anyone who needs a top-notch monitor for productivity or creative work. With its excellent color representation, massive display, and seamless multitasking capabilities, it's become my go-to setup for getting work done in comfort.
The price, while certainly not cheap, does come with a lot of premium features that make this display stand out from the competition. If you're looking to upgrade your productivity setup or simply want a monitor that looks great on your desk from both front and back, then this is an excellent choice. Of course, if you're strictly working in HDR or need a more extreme curve, there are other options available.
Overall, I'd say 9 out of 10 people would not be using the Studio Display after having tried it – but that's largely because most users don't have the space or budget for such an enormous display. If you can justify the cost and want to take advantage of Apple's exceptional build quality and feature set, then this is definitely worth considering.
If you're interested in seeing how my experience with a 47-inch monitor compares to this one, I've posted a video from about a year ago where I compare and contrast these two displays. It's a fascinating look at how much can change (or remain the same) over time, and it might be worth checking out if you're considering making a similar switch.
