LinusTechTips and Me Built…What

Hey, what's good, guys?Welcome back to TechSmartt, and I'm here with basically the tech dad.You guys know him as Linus Sebastian,AKA Linus Tech Tips, andLinus had this crazy idea. So, you might have seen, I mean, you just tell them the idea.- This wasn't my idea, this was your idea!- Basically--- You came to me, you're like,oh Linus, I have no ideawhere we're gonna storeall of our video footage!Whatever shall I do?- So, I went to Linus and was like, hey,I need a server becausewe're expanding a lot here.Allegedly, this has 140 terabytes in it.Is that right?- Well, that's not actually in here now. This is just an empty box.- I haven't built anything ever,so we're about to build a fat server. Is this is a NAS or a RAID?I'm a noob when it comes to this. This is my first time.- This is 140 terabytes ofprecision manufactured electronics.- That is the gas.Whoa.- Oh, you got 12s.- You helped me set this up.I don't even know. This is the first timeI've opened this box.- No, Seagate hookedyou the (censored) up.So, that's 180 terabytes.- So, just to give you guys a background,I have never built anything technical. The channel might be called TechSmartt, but that is the complete opposite.- I mean, the \\\

storeall of our video footage!Whatever shall I do?- So, I went to Linus and was like, hey,I need a server becausewe're expanding a lot here.Allegedly, this has 140 terabytes in it.Is that right?- Well, that's not actually in here now. The channel might be called TechSmartt, but that is the complete opposite.- I mean, the \"smart\" is with two Ts.- Okay, how do I do this?- You're holding it wrong again.Okay, here hold my hand, right there, hold my hands.I really do feel like you're tech dad.Just stop, just stop, you're killing me.No, don't move that hand! No, don't move that hand! So, they're rated for use altogether,so even when they'revibrating next to each other, that's cool, that's safe. And, perhaps most importantly, they have included data recovery service.- Ooh, so if one of thesefails, I mail it in,and they'll help it out?- And as long as it is recoverable, they will do their best, within reason.Have you been careful withthis for the last few months?'Cause they knew whothey were sending it to.\"Handle with care please!!\"Two exclamation marks right there.- Two Ts, two exclamation marks. It makes sense!Wow, 45 drives.I only count 15.What's up with that, Linus?- Because their original enclosurewas all about 45 drives in a 4U chassis. Now they have models with 15, 30, 60.Take your time.- Oh wait, do you want meto put the box back up,you wanna put the box up?- No, get out of the way!Do you even have a screwdriver?- Yes, of course.Phillips, flathead, what do you need?- Phillips.- You see how quick that was?- See how he doesn't know thatcomputers don't use flatheads? He doesn't have one.Do you have the screwdriver yet?- No, do youneed Phillips or flathead?I forgot.- Phillips!Whoever edits this, yougotta leave that in uncutso people know just howshort the period of timein between me telling himwhat screwdriver he needsand him forgetting what it was.- All right, I got the flathead for you.- So, first step isyou're going to take offthose six screws.Do you remember where they are?- Come on, dad, don'tembarrass me like thisin front of my audience, man.- I don't think anyone could embarrass youin front of your audience more thanyou've embarrassed yourselfin front of your audience.- All right, let's openthis up, tech quickie!- So, just like a normal computer,it's got a CPU, but it's a Xeoninstead of a Core i5 or a Core i7.Basically the same damnthing, but more expensive. Then you've got RAM.- How much RAM isthis and why don't we haveall of these filled up?- This is eight gigs of RAM,and the reason we don't haveit all filled up is thatthis is just a storage machine, and it just doesn't really need it.- And if it looks like I'm sweating,I'm just nervous to be around dad.I haven't seen him in a few years,so it's a little toasty in here too.- You're making me feelvery uncomfortable. This is the power supply,so this supplies the power, okay?- That's what it means, okay.- Then right here, we've got an SSD.We will probably notend up using this one.I think you and I are probablygonna run down to Fry's.This right here is just a USB drive.Yeah, so this is actually gonnahold our operating system.Like, you don't boot off a hard drive,we're actually gonna boot up off this.- What else wegot in here that's newor that I need to know?- These cables, and these cables, and all these cables. These are for the metricwhackton of drives. This is the Storinator AV15.So, all your drives are gonna goshoop, shoop, shoop, shoop, shoop, all the way across here, and this thing's gonnaget real heavy real fast. So, we're gonna have 180terabytes of raw storage, but, using unRAID, we actually losethe capacity of one of them.So we're gonna have 168 usable, but what that means is that extra oneis doing what's called parity. So, parity means thatany one of these drivescan outright fail, burst into flames,so you would actually not even notice. You could have your machinerunning the whole time, you could have all yourstuff safely backed upaway from, you know, mother Google. No monthly fees, no BS, no nothing.Everything here belongs to you.- So Linus, now that we've gotbasically everything out of the box, some stuff still in the box, what do we do now?- There's not actually alot of assembly required,so all we gotta do istake all those drivesand put 'em in here.Do you guys have knives?- We don't have those in the States. That's a Canadian only product.- We just have guns.Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang!Okay, so the way to tell how this goes inis you've got the connector.See, it's kinda off to the side.- I'm so happy you came, Linus. It makes me feel so goodknowing I get the timethat we once had growing up, you know?- Makes him feel so goodknowing that I came.So he's a pleaser. That's good, that's how I brought you up.- Who is the funniest outof everyone else in tech?- Who's the funniest in tech?Wow.Tech people aren't reallyknown for their funny.- TechFunnyy over here, bro, with two Ys.I don't know about that.- You're not really in tech.- Oh, can we get the fog horns going?- Just stop, stop, you're killing me.- Wow.- Look at that.- This is really sweet. So, you've done this beforewith MKVHD, iJustine, maybe there's some others.- Yep, Austin.- Austin too.- No, Austine one, the first Austin.- All right, dad, so what is next?- So now all we gotta do isconnect it to your network,so we need your network switch.- So yeah, what is that?- Just stop, stop, you're killing me.- All right, our networkswitch is way over there,so we're gonna head to Fry's,which is gonna be so awesome, and go grab a really long cable. So, cat six.- Yeah, sure.- I don't know, we getting, like, a Siamese cable? What kind of cat?- You can pick whatever color you want.- It's adoption.I wanna get black and yellow, black and yellow, black and yellow. You know Whiz Kalifa, that name ring a bell?I love it.- It's funny, 'cause Ithink you're an idiotwhen it comes to tech, and then you think I'm an idiotwhen it comes to, like, anything cool.- Stuff that's pop culture, cool.I'm the definition of cool. This is the aisle I've never been down,'cause I get always soscared and self-consciousthat daddy's gonna hit meif I buy the wrong thing.I'm the definition of cool.- So, you still aregonna need cache drives, but they don't have to be as big.- I'm broke though, bro,I can't afford the cache.- Yes you can.So, they don't need to be as big, because what the cache drive does dois it lets you copy filesonto it a lot faster. So the cache lets you write to it fast, and then it sits on thecache, and then overnight,it'll flush it to the hard drives. What this is is thishas eight gigabyte portsand two 10 gig ports. So what this would allow you to dois have an ingest station thathas a fast link to the NAS.So, when you're copying things over, you can copy at 200,300 megabytes a second.Marquez didn't do this andemailed me the other weekand was like, hey, so I'm--- When you're in town.- I think I probablyshould've done the SSDs.- Thank you, Marquez, I'mnot making that mistake.- What I'd really like todo is go with 860 pros, and we need two.(upbeat jazzy music)Wanna do a haul video?- Let's do a haul!- We'll do a haul! So, we got--- Don't dump it out on this.- Okay, so we got our 10 gig switch.- A little more emotion and excitement.Hold it up to the camera, do the hand. The cameras have a hard time focusing. They have to do it with their handso it grabs the focus. They're like, so this brushhere looks really nice.- Another ethernet cable. That's your girl voice? And then we got a couple one terabyte SSDsthat we're gonna use for a data cache.- We also lost the screws.- They've gotta be somewhere. We probably have it oncamera where we put them.- Can someone just, you know what, let's just stop it and we'llgo back and we'll find them.I feel like I'm in NASCAR right nowdoing a pit stop change.- Do you have a knife? That's a tough sticker.- Screwdriver.- Okay, well, I mean, if youwere gonna open it like that,I could've done that.Fine, you know, I mean, why even? There.Okay, so I'm gonna hold this for you.Take out one of these screws. So, we're doing a little trick where SSDshave no moving parts, so they don'treally need to be held in that well,so we're taking the screws from oneand we're using it for two.- Someone at home is gonnatry to build their own NASand it's gonna catch on fire, just because of this one thing.- Your ratchet is going the wrong way.Are you not noticing that thisis a ratcheting screwdriver?- See, ratchet in my generation, Linus, that means a whole different thing.- Do you need me toshow you how to use it?- Maybe.- So now, we're gonnatake out the other HP1.- Yeah, I wannado the second clip. You know me, I wanna do it,I wanna feel like I'm contributing.- Here's our data cable.I'll let you do the other one.Are you sure you're puttingit on the right way?- I am a little scared, not gonna lie.- There's an L shape.- Yeah, right there- I still can't see what you're doing,so I'm just worried.- You gotta trust me, dad. It's been 21 years.Oh, I don't wanna disappointyou and mom, no, no!- It's a really fragile connector. You shouldn't need to wiggle it.- Do it for your country,do it for your country! All right, I tried.- Can I see?- Oh, did it with one hand.Do you wanna close youreyes too on this next one?- I could. Our cache is installed!- Nice!- We got that cache. You can say that, right? That's what the kids say?Open that.- Sweet! You're making this so hard.- I didn't know you were that into tech.- Whoa!Dude, I'm just fiending for the gear.- So we gotta go put thisnext to your wireless routerand plug it into the wall. And also, you need to plug thisinto one of the networkports on the wireless router. So guess what you get to do now?- Call the number and say we need help?- No, you get to turn it on.- Here goes the switch, Ev.You ready, you cutting this? You getting this?Big moment, big moment.- Big moment, you gottapress the power button.- I hit the power button back here.- Yeah, that's for the power supply.- See, this is why I need the help.- You turned it off.No, you turned the power supply off.It was on out of the box.- Bro, no it's not, now it says it's on.- Oh, it's not plugged in.- Oh!- So, who's editing this? How much do I have topay you under the tableto make sure that allthe embarrassing stuff-- Oh, it's gonna be in there.- Makes it in?- It's on 'cause I plugged it in,and that would mean it's on,'cause I plugged it in.(laughing)Do you see a green lighton the motherboard? It's on.There's a blue light.(clicking)(humming)Oh!- All right, so I'm on the same network,so theoretically, all I have to dois type in http://tower.- Amazing!- So that is unRAID Server Pro.- This is the coolest thingI've seen in a long time, because I've never really ventured downthe technical path of tech.Okay, so what are you tweaking?- Okay, this setting right herelets you decide between higher performancewith more wear on your drives,or lower performance withlower power consumptionand less wear on your drives.- If I choose the optionwhere it's more stressand also higher performance,is that gonna compromise, I mean--- It's probably fine.So you want the higher performance one?- Yeah.- Okay, this is really important. What do you wanna call it?I'm thinking Tower?- Call it NAS.We got some pop culturework to work out with--- We have nothing in common, you and I.- Linus, I paid you to be here,I paid you to be here, just take the money.- No you didn't, you didn't pay nothing! We've got two parity drives,we've got 13 storage drives,we've got two cache drives, and we're ready to click start. You wanna do the honors? Can you find the click on a PC?- I don't think I'm ready, let's just power it down. All right, here we go, the big moment.- All right, give it a minute. It's gotta spin all this stuff up.- Well, here's the thing, so did you knowsolid state drives, theydon't have anything to spin?(slapping)- He hits me so much. This yellow thing here, parity is invalid, that's because it actually needsto build that data set.- So it's just checking,it doesn't need any datafrom me or any media?- No, in fact, you couldeven use it right now.Okay, so you can see right here,we have unmountable disks.- All of them, they're firing up.- Yeah, we gotta format them. It'll actually take a couple days, because you have so much storage.156 usable terabytes iswhat we ended up withafter some formatting.- Yeah, two parities.- Two parity drives. Now we got a bunch ofraw storage sitting here, accessible over the network.Next stage is we gotta create some shares. So basically, what I'msetting up right nowis so that all of your stuffthat doesn't have to be high performanceis just going straight to the hard drivesand not even bothering your SSDs.And then we could find some file.Let's go see what Linushas downloaded lately. Here's an OPPO Find X first look.- So just straight dragging itfrom anywhere on the laptop.- And now we are playingthat off the NAS right now.For some reason it's derping. There we go.- And to the NAS'scredit, it just was builtand it's still building itself.- So that's it.- What, we're done?Fun time's over?- That's it.- I never knew what all this was. This is my first time, honestly, building anything.Well, we're gonna put this back together, but thank you so much, Linus,Seagate, unRAID, as well as--- 45 Drives.- So, that's it for this video.Make sure you check out the video we didon Linus's channel in thedescription, that room tour. They ain't ready for it!And you can check outmore of Linus's stuff, link down below, likesocial media, his favorite. All right guys, see you later.\n"
