Pagani Huayra _ Richard Hammond reviews _ Top Gear Series 19 _ BBC

The Pagani Huayra: A Supercharged Masterpiece

For the author, the Pagani Zonda is their favorite supercar, and it's been around for over a decade now. However, after years of promises from Pagani to replace it with a brand new car, they have finally delivered. The Huayra is an incredible machine that costs $800,000 and boasts a top speed of 230 miles per hour.

The name Lyra comes from a South American god of wind, which may not be what you want to hear. However, what's truly exciting about this supercar is its powerful six-litre twin-turbo V12 engine, made specially for it by AMG. Once petrol is applied, the engine produces an astonishing 730 brake horsepower, making it a truly savage and savage thing on the road.

The Huayra's drama isn't just limited to its speed, as its interior is like something out of a Victorian era, with a "Victorians idea of the 23rd century" vibe. The detail is beyond obsessive, with every single nut and bolt made from titanium. The name badge takes 24 hours to carve out from a solid piece of aluminum, while each wheel is hewn from a single aluminium block that takes five days to make.

One of the most impressive features of the Huayra is its gear shifter, which is made up of 67 different parts arranged just so you can hear the mechanical clunk of a gear being selected. You don't even need to use it, as the paddles by the wheel are there for added occasion and a touch of drama. This fanatical attention to detail goes on and on, making each drive an experience unlike any other.

The Huayra's body is made from carbon taymiyah, which is a blend of carbon fiber and titanium that's incredibly light but also stiff enough not to shatter in the event of a crash. This makes it one of the safest supercars on the road. However, not every element of the Huayra is cutting-edge technology. Unlike fashionable twin-plate clutches used in many modern cars, Pagani opted for a more traditional single plate clutch that's smaller and lighter.

This decision has resulted in a car that weighs just 1,350 kilograms, with a power-to-weight ratio of 541 brake horsepower per ton. While the Bugatti Veyron is four-wheel drive, the Huayra is rear-wheel drive, which may seem less capable at first glance but actually makes it all the more impressive.

Now that we've seen what the Huayra can do on straight lines, let's talk about how it handles corners. The author is surprised to find that despite its incredible power and speed, the Huayra can be driven with a surprising degree of stability and control. This is largely thanks to the black art of aerodynamics, which measures how fast you're going and deploys flaps on the outside to keep everything stable.

There are two flaps at the back and two at the front, which may seem excessive but actually work together to make the Huayra handle like a dream. The author is impressed that despite its impressive speed and power, the car doesn't feel big or clumsy like some of its rivals, but rather it feels stable and well-balanced.

The Zonda was always going to be a difficult act to follow, as it set the bar high for supercars. However, the Huayra has pulled it off, delivering an incredible driving experience that's both thrilling and safe. With its stunning design, incredible performance, and attention to detail, it's clear why the author is so smitten with this machine.

One of the things that sets Pagani apart from other car manufacturers is their complete lack of corporate culture and branded teddy bears. Instead, they focus on creating a "bedroom wall pinup poster" with a touch of madness, which is evident in every aspect of the Huayra's design and engineering.

This approach may not be for everyone, as it means that the Huayra is a car that's truly unique and exclusive. With only a select few owners around the world, it's clear that this supercar is not just about speed and performance, but also about style and exclusivity. And with its price tag of $800,000, it's clear that this is a car for those who have the means to appreciate it.

In conclusion, the Pagani Huayra is an incredible machine that's truly worth experiencing firsthand. With its stunning design, incredible performance, and attention to detail, it's clear why it's become one of the most talked-about supercars in recent years. Whether you're a seasoned car enthusiast or just someone who appreciates beauty and craftsmanship, the Huayra is definitely worth checking out.
