9 Reasons Why I Hate Rob Dahm's 3 Rotor RX-7

After Spending the Day with Rob Dom's RX7: A Love-Hate Relationship with this Iconic Car

As I spent the day with Rob Dom's RX7, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and trepidation. Despite being a fan of Lamborghinis, I have to admit that I've always been fascinated by the RX7, and this particular car has won me over. However, as I delved deeper into its quirks and flaws, I realized that it's not for the faint of heart.

One of the common problems with the RX7 is that the solder joints in the tachometer can go out, rendering the RPM gauge useless. This means that the driver has to rely solely on their ears to gauge speed, which is a definite issue if you're involved in a high-speed accident. To simplify his life, Rob Dom decided to cut the transmission wires, effectively eliminating the Speedo altogether. While this may seem like a practical solution, it's also a reminder of the car's numerous problems.

The RX7 has a laundry list of issues, some of which make it better than others. For instance, the car was driven hard at the drag strip and fifth gear completely seized off. Despite this, it's still possible to get a good ET, but with a significant caveat – fifth gear no longer works altogether. The car is also extremely hard to drive, making it the most difficult car I've ever had the pleasure of driving.

So, what makes the RX7 so challenging? For starters, it has no power steering, which means that the steering is incredibly tight and unforgiving. To make matters worse, it comes equipped with ET street drag radials on the back, which cause the car to track back and forth all over the road like its alignment is completely screwed up. With more normal tires, however, the car tracks perfectly straight.

Getting into gear is also a difficult process, particularly when compared to other iconic cars like the GT. It's not uncommon for Rob Dom to struggle with putting this car in Reverse, first second third fourth fifth – well, fifth doesn't work anymore, period. The process can be frustrating, but it's all part of the experience.

Under the hood lies a 20B three-rotor engine from a Mazda Cosmo, paired with an S480 Borg Warner turbocharger that produces an impressive 750 wheel horsepower at 25 psi. However, the turbo lag is unbelievable – the Boost doesn't kick in until 5,000 RPMs, leaving nothing happening for what feels like an eternity. It's definitely something you have to get used to, but it can also be a thrilling experience when the Boost finally kicks in.

As I reflected on my day with the RX7, I couldn't help but think about Rob Dom's YouTube channel, which has more subscribers than mine (and that's not related to this car). However, his Lamborghini is also cooler than mine – just kidding. Seriously, though, it's been an interesting experience driving this car, and while it comes with its fair share of quirks and problems, it's undeniably awesome.

One final note: the RX7 can be a bit finicky, often stalling when you're cruising at 40 mph in third gear. It's as if the car has a mind of its own, and sometimes it decides to shut off altogether. But that's all part of the charm, right? Despite its flaws, the RX7 is definitely a car worth experiencing, especially for those who are willing to put in the effort to understand and appreciate its unique characteristics.

In conclusion, my day with Rob Dom's RX7 has been an unforgettable experience, filled with excitement, frustration, and a healthy dose of humor. While it may not be the easiest car to drive, it's certainly one of the most memorable – and if you're a fan of iconic cars like this, then you owe it to yourself to give the RX7 a try. Who knows? You might just find yourself falling in love with its quirks and flaws, just like I did.

first off a common problem with the RX7 is that the solder joints in the tachometer go out so that means I have no idea what RPM the engine is right now you have to purely rely on your ear which is definitely an issue if you are death which is a possibility because this car is so loud with a 4inch exhaust all the way through and when at two steps just blows your eard drums out now to simplify his life that's Rob's quote he decided to cut the transmission wires which now you have no Speedo you know Speedos are good reminders of how fast you're going so if you get pulled over and the cop asks how fast are you going you can say you have no freaking idea because Rob doesn't want to know this car has a laundry list of problems some of which make the car better the others don't for
