JBL Boombox - Hands On Review

The JBL Boombox: A Blast From the Past with a Modern Twist

This is the JBL boombox and it is designed obviously for those of us who are nostalgic for the 80s, the ability to carry a boombox on our shoulder down the street to stand outside of a girlfriend's house in the pouring rain and it looks fantastic. But does it live up to the hype and should you add it to your listening arsenal? Let's find out.

So, the boombox looks a lot like an item you might expect to have seen in a Back to the Future movie - it's a round Zeppelin with a thick handle and a good amount of heft. Our review unit came in forest green, but the speaker is also available in a more classic black colorway. Despite its clear image in the past in both name and aesthetics, the boombox has a bit more tricks up its sleeve than its cassette fueled predecessors.

First and foremost, is a massive 20,000 milliamp hour battery which will allow you to blast tunes for a full 24 hours. The speaker is also about as life proof as they come with an IPX7 rating that means it can withstand everything up to small dunks in a pool. This thing is also loud with dual four inch woofers on each end, the boombox offers massive low-end even in outdoor settings where it can be heard at high volumes for up to 50 feet.

One thing we weren't quite as ecstatic about with the boombox was its upper register performance while we loved the mid and low-end response. Songs with lots of acoustic instruments tended to get a bit muddy up top. Controlling the speaker is done via 6 buttons which appeared just below the handle, there's a bluetooth pairing power volume down and up and play pause buttons in addition to a button for JBL connect Plus which is the company's way of linking multiple speakers should you have another JBL on hand.

On the back of the boombox is a rubber flap with five ports. There's two USB ports for charging devices on the go, which is pretty rad. A 3.5 millimeter aux port, micro USB input and power input can connect up to three devices to the boombox simultaneously via bluetooth which is really nice when you take this thing with you to a backyard BBQ where people have different tastes in music.

The boombox looks like it was designed for listeners who grew up in the 80s and that's very clearly on purpose. People from that generation are older now, they're having kids, their car camping instead of backpacking, and this speaker is very clearly designed with that kind of audience in mind. It's a bit too heavy to carry with you on your next backwoods adventure, and it's a little bit on the costly side but if you're looking for a great and loud speaker to take with you to your kids' next sports game or the next backyard barbecue this is a great option.
