A Cyber Security Firm Tricks Apple's Face ID Security Tech
It's Monday, November 13th, and someone finally tricked Apple's face ID security tech. The process wasn't easy, but it was worth it for those involved. A cyber security firm in Vietnam claimed to have successfully spoofed the iPhone's face ID security system by creating a mask that could unlock the phone.
The mask is a copy of the face of an employee who appeared in a video unlocking the phone. According to the company, the mask cost around $150 and involves a complicated mix of 3D printed parts, 2D images, makeup, and apparently a lot of scotch tape. The company also mentioned that there was some special processing done on the cheeks and around the face, but no specifics were released.
It's worth noting that it was only a matter of time before someone cracked Face ID. Seeing how much effort went into this project suggests that most iPhone 10 users are probably still safe from having their faces quickly spoofed unless they're famous enough to be in a wax museum or something like that.
iPhone 10 Sales Numbers Start to Take Shape
The sales numbers for the iPhone 10 are starting to take shape, and it looks like a major hit for Apple. However, this success is causing two problems according to BGR. Apple is scrambling to pump up iPhone 10 production by perhaps as much as 45% in light of the heavy demand.
It appears that the heavy demand is coming at the expense of another phone, the iPhone 8. BGR said Apple tech watcher KGI securities is forecasting a serious production cut for the eight for the first quarter next year, maybe as much as 60%. However, demand for the larger 8 Plus iPhone is actually above forecasts.
Apple seems to be hardly complaining about having to cut production of the cheaper iPhone in order to pump up the assembly lines for the more expensive model. If you had your eye on upgrading to the iPhone 8, it might want to make it happen sooner rather than later, as it's starting to look like the $1,000 smartphone is going to be the new standard.
The Game Clock is Ticking Down on Gas-Powered Cars
The game clock is ticking down on gas-powered cars as electric vehicle sales continue to increase and car makers plan for an all-electric future. However, don't tell that to the folks who make the Corvette. Just in case the latest 650 horsepower land missile wasn't spicy enough, Chevy just reintroduced the ZR1 variant.
The ZR1 returns, packing a supercharged V8 capable of making 755 horsepower and 715 foot-pound of torque. Chevrolet just rolled out the car for the first time in Dubai, where it will likely find a home as a police car. The car reportedly goes 210 miles an hour for a top speed and does 0 to 60 in well under 3 seconds.
There will be two options for a fixed or active rear wing, but no price was announced. It's likely that the price will be over $100,000, which is still nearly half the cost of even the least expensive name-brand supercars. And yes, you can get it in orange.
