The Art of Making Your Own Household Products at Home

So fresh and so clean, clean. Hey, everyone. Welcome back. Well, ever since we made our own foaming hand soap, we've been trying to find new ways to make more products at home. Yes, we want to cut out chemicals and also save a little bit of cash. So today, we're making three different products to help with your laundry.

The first thing we're going to be making is our own laundry detergent. We recently read the back of the laundry detergent we were buying in the store, and it was filled with chemicals. And now that we have a cat, we really need to take care of him. Take care of him exactly. We have someone to care for us. We have to watch his needs, put his needs before ours. That's right. So for this detergent, you only need three ingredients: one cup of washing soda, one-quarter cup of baking soda, and a five-ounce bar of scented castile soap.

So you have a fine cheese grater, and we're just going to grate our soap in a bowl here. Great. And what's great about this is the soap is really inexpensive, and you can kind of pick out your favorite scent. We're using a lavender one, yeah, it smells good already. Yeah, it does. And it's all natural, which is nice. So the soap will break down in the wash, but if you're worried about it still being too chunky, you can actually throw this all in a blender. But that's not 100% necessary. But if you wash your clothes on cold, you might notice that there's a little soap residue, and then maybe putting it in the blender might be a good idea. But we're going to keep it simple today.

We'll just grate our soap and mix it with washing soda and baking soda, and that's it. We don't need any fancy machines or instructions. Just three simple ingredients, and you have your own laundry detergent. And the best part is, it's all natural, so you don't have to worry about any harsh chemicals damaging your skin or the environment.

So our laundry detergent is ready. Let's take a look at how we made it. We took one cup of washing soda and one-quarter cup of baking soda, and we mixed them together in a bowl. Then we added our grated scented castile soap to the mix. And that's it. Our laundry detergent is made.

Our next product is going to be fabric washcloths. We're going to soak these cloths in water with some vodka and essential oils to make a natural fabric freshener. This is actually an old thing that we found out when we were doing our theater gigs back in the day. Hey, hey! The costume people would actually spray them down with vodka. Yeah. So all this is the secret to making your clothes smell great without using any chemicals.

We're going to start by soaking these washcloths in water with two ounces of vodka and 12 ounces of distilled water. We'll add 20 drops of essential oils to the mix, and that's it. We used lavender essential oil for this one, because we're really into that theme today. But you can use any essential oil you like. Our last product is going to be a fabric freshener spray. We're going to make this using distilled water, vodka, and essential oils. This is actually an old trick that we learned when we were doing our theater gigs back in the day. Hey, hey! The costume people would actually spray them down with vodka. Yeah. We're going to start by mixing 2 ounces of vodka with 12 ounces of distilled water and 20 drops of essential oils. We'll add a few drops more if we want it to be stronger, but for now, that's enough. Our fabric freshener spray is made.

ingredientsinto an airtight container.The first thing we're gonnaadd is our washing soda.We got that at the supermarketin the cleaning aisle.And then we're gonnaadd our baking soda.And then, of course, our soap.This is the ratio you're gonnawant to use for, like, onemix or one batch.Of course, you can double this.Make as many as you want.So you can makea big bulk batch,and you don't have tokeep grating every,you know, bar of soap each time.Yeah.And then, we actuallyput the ingredientsright on that jar herejust so we rememberand we don't have to look it up.It's right there.We can look at it andsay, oh, right one cup.One cup, not two cups.Whatever.All right, now we'rejust going to--(SINGING) Shake it up baby,(SINGING) Shake it up, baby.Laundry is so fun!All right, and then,before we open it,we're just gonna leteverything settle,just so when we open it,it doesn't, you know--Come back at you.Exactly.Wow, I actually think we couldprobably make about five--Oh, yeah.--things.But the great thing is, you onlyneed two tablespoons per load.So even just thisone batch is actuallyprobably going to last us--A long time.Yes.And you can't havelaundry detergentwithout a dryer sheet.So we're making ourown dryer sheets,all-natural dryer sheets.And we're using someold wash cloths.Or you can use new, orfabric, cotton, an old shirt,anything like that.And a little bit of essentialoils-- we chose lavender again.Yes, and some white vinegar.And that's it.That's it, yeah.We're gonna pour it into anairtight container again.Yeah, this is 1/2 of acup of white vinegar.And eight dropsof essential oils.I guess you can use alittle more if you want.1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.OK, he's going with 10.And--Well, that's thebest part about this,is that you can customizeit to how you like it.That's right.You know, if you like things tobe more fragrant, more smelly,go with you a littlemore essential oil.And you know,speaking of smelly,this is not gonna make yourlaundry smell like vinegar.No.No.And then we're just gonna putout our wash cloths in the jarthere.Yeah, you want toput them vertically.The vinegar willsoak up the towel.But you don't want them tojust be sitting in a puddle.Yep.So just like that.And then you pop the lid on, andthey're ready to go, basically.Before you throw'em in the dryer,you do want to wring 'emout and then throw it in.And then, the bestpart is you canreuse these over, andover, and over againand make your little mixture.Just like a store-boughtdryer sheet,this will helpsoften your clothesand help withstatic electricity,and without the chemicals.For our last littlelaundry hack,we're sharing ourfabric freshener spray.And this is actuallyan old thingthat we found out whenwe were doing our theatergigs back in the day.Hey, hey!The costume peoplewould actuallyspray them down with vodka.Yeah.So all this is the--all we're using todayis distilled water,vodka and essential oils.That's really all you need.That's it.And they do that becausea lot of the costumesare handmade, one of a kind.So they don't want to ruina lot of the materials.They don't-- theydon't really wash it.They just give it aspray every night.For this we're using2 ounces of vodka,12 ounces of distilled water,20 drops of essential oils.And we're just gonna pop 'emright into our spray bottle.Yeah.You do not need to use goodquality vodka for this.Any vodka will work.Yes, totally.So we want 20 dropsof essential oils.We're using lavender.We have a lavender themehere going on, but that's OK.I like that.Yeah, you can use anything.It'll be--I wonder-- I mean, youprobably don't evenhave to use an essential oil.No, you actually really don't.They didn't use essentialoils on the road.It was just--Let me get you.You might have toturn the thing.I did it.So you can use this onupholstery, fabric--It smells good.Actually, thatreally smells good.And there's no traceof vodka either.No, not at all.It just smells like lavender.(BRITISH ACCENT) Dirty pit?Clean it up.OK?So simple.So easy.We've actually been doingthis for the past month or so,and we're never looking back.Yeah, our clothes havebeen smelling great.Teddy loves it.We love it.We're bringing
