Our EPIC Threadripper 2 2950X Build Is Alive!

Building a Beast: The Second Generation Threadripper PC Build

I decided to use two GPUs for two separate tasks, so while I'm rendering a video and gaming, I'll have each GPU sort of do those tasks separately while using both of them at the same time because if you recall when explored the options for core affinity, noticed that running these cards in SLI and doing multiple tasks could actually affect performance and the results really did speak for themselves. So, I'll live leave or link that video right over here so you can check it out. Pretty cool, interesting results.

So, that's what I'm going for this build - just disabling hassle, I'm going with just straight to separate tenancies is asked for the other components I've stuck with the same be quiet dark power 1000 watt power supply and these amazing looking cable non-whites Lieb cables which it again really go well with our stop built so with that out of the way let's put together this beast of a PC and another build done guys, I have to say I actually like the looks more than my original Thread River build but what do you guys think is the black and white bill the best bed better than the predominantly white look from the old one? Let us know in the comments down below.

I also didn't go for fancy with RGB lighting in fact there are no RGB fans or even RGB graphics cards I basically permanently disabled that except for the RAM modules and themotherboard lining which I've set to white to complement the black colors scheme. In fact, the lighting from the RAM modules actually separates the cooler with the motherboard and gives you a cool depth effect and overall it just looks pretty awesome and I couldn't wait to do some tests on this new PC.

Now, I want to mention this cooling kit that Asus offers for their EX-W9+ motherboards and it's designed to optimize the VR and cooling performance if people want to overclock the WX series processor it can also be used in cases of high-level overclocking on a regular threadripper CPU as well. Similar kits will be offered for their other boards too but it won't be included by default in the box, you need to ask Asus for one directly if you already have an X-9+ motherboard or buy from a retailer.

The zenith board cooling kit includes a small bracket and a small fan that would be mounted to the top mount v arm heatsink there's also a secondary heat sink for the SOC and that will need to be installed. I also want to mention that this kit isn't necessary for compatibility with the 2990 WX only 2970WX but it's certainly recommended if you intend to overclock those power-hungry 250-watt processors.

Another thing that I want to mention is some information we didn't have for the initial explained video, I want included here. Basically, these are the biases needed to ensure you're a smart boy, compatible with the second-generation 34 CPUs, the x2 minions tricks and the prime x3 99 will require the 803 or newer versions while the zenith will need the 1303 version or newer which is what I'm using.

What's next well it's actually pretty simple because I still can't reveal any of the results or benchmarks for this new processor because you'll have to be a little patient just wait until next week until the embargo lives and we'll have those results for you guys, I'll definitely make sure to compare the 19th DX to the Skydeck specie that's simply behind me and of course to these new 2950X PCs. Definitely stay tuned for those comparisons let's just hope that AMD doesn't send one of those awesome 2990WX CPUs but other than that our second-generation third upper content will continue next week with some official benchmarks.

So, I want to pass on a question to you guys, do you still consider or would you consider buying threadripper 2 knowing for the fact that it would not give you a significant benefit or boost performance when it comes to gaming compared to Ryzen 2 or Coffee lake or do you see yourself taking advantage of this in your particular workflow for example taking advantage of all these courses and do you see value in that? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments, stay subscribe to our channel for even more threadripper 2 coverage and of course you can check out our new boot sequence channel for the latest tech news and rumors.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwell guys it's just been a few dayssince we posted our first secondgeneration threadripper 2 video andI've been busy with a little bit of anupgrade project that I wanted to sharewith you guys and if you missed out onour threadripper 2 explain video youcan actually check it out right overhere but in a nutshell the potentialwith these new processors are justremarkable and for someone like me wholikes to explore and create an optimizedediting workstation PC this is a greatplatform to look into in fact I can'twait to do multiple rendering testsbetween you know X399 skylake X Ryzencoffeelake to see which one's actuallygoing to be the best editing experienceand most importantly renderingperformances well you can actually tellabout right now that I'm super excitedwith what threadripper 2 is bringing tothe table so I decided to put together abuild or my first build featuring thisnew CPU in fact it's not like a newbuild it's more of an update to myexisting Threadripper 2 PC that I'vebeen thinking about upgrading for quitesome time so this just happens to be theperfect time because AMD centers the newsample and it's just a drop-in upgradebecause doesn't require a huge platformshift so that's pretty awesome so let'stalk about the components right after amessage from our sponsor so you'relooking for something with class goodvalue comfortably populate an ATXmotherboard are you it's all about theuser experience and great airflow whoknew your temperatures would drop thatlow route the cables behind the coverilluminate your hardware with built-inLEDs the age 500 I is for you todiscover this one's in real life not inyour dreams say hello to the link belowthe age 400 series from NZXT is a goalright guys so you may remember thatone of the first things that I ended updoing after getting my original 1950 Xwas building the ultimate productivityPC well that performance monster wasworking away until quite recently whenit went into semi-retirement after Ineeded to clear out in space in myoffice and two relatively large pcs justdidn't fit my intent was to minimize thesystem's footprint and bring it back tolife and for those of you wondering allthe components in this video are linkedin the description down below all in allmy experience with therapure was amazingI even didbit of an upgrading by installing twosamsung 960 pro SSDs in raid and theresults were absolutely insaneI mean how could I keep something likethat tucked away just because spacedidn't permit the Challenger was Ineeded a bit more compact case that alsosupported my existing asus rog x3 99zenith extreme motherboard which happensto be almost to 80 millimeters widethat's where the first new componentsteps into the frame say hello to thefractal design to find our six withtempered glass which is relatively acompact case that happens to supportmotherboards that are up to 285millimeters wide it comes in this mutedblack color which is what I wanted sincethe Corsair air 540 looked awesome but Iprefer these stealthy black approachwith this case but the real start of theshow is of course the new threadripper 2950Xwhich is actually a drop-in upgradeas I said before for the zenith extremeI provided you're running the correctBIOS all I did was download the latestversion of 1303 before switching out thecpus and it worked perfectly wellnow about the 2950X just like the 1950Xit has 16 cores and 32 threads butwhat's important to me is its base clockand boost clocks are hundred megahertzand 400 megahertz respectively higher thanthe chip it will be replacing thatshould helpoverall with performance in everyapplication even more importantly itconsumes about 180 watts at load so I'mgetting higher speeds without I hopeboosting power needs but what aboutcooling this beast of a CPU well that'sinteresting part guys because I ditchedwater cooling for this build and decidedto go air cooling all the way and Ipicked this the cooler master rightthrough / it's an awesome looking coolerfirst and foremost it is ginormous Imean this thing is a monster of a coolerand it's I love the stealth designapproach with this cooler in the firstplace and overall it should complementthe build really well and yeah hopefullyget those really cool temperatures aswell now you may remember this coolerfrom a little while ago because it wasactually used to cool down the threatupper - system aimed he presented atthis year's of Computex we ended upgetting some hands-on time with thiscooler and you can find that video overhere since then coolermaster have made afew minor upgrades so it can now handlean overclocked 2950X and it overallfits at the black and wild theme of thisbuild really wellI can't discuss cooling temperatures oroverclocking yet but let me tell youthis I think you'll be pretty happy withthe results one of the main issues withfirst-generation threadripper and Ryzenparts was they're somewhat limitedmemory compatibility basically if youwanted to use higher capacity modulesspeed had to be sacrificed but that'sbeen changed a bit with the simplestarchitecture on second-generation partsso i'm saying goodbye to my trusty 64gigabyte g.skill kit and moving towardsthis the Corsair Vengeance white RGB 128gigabyte ddr4 modules this should giveme more than enough space forproductivity and setting aside somespace for AMD's new sense and mytechnology that allows for memory andphysical storage drives to be combinedresulting in ultra fast access to dataeven though the dual samsung 960 propasses decent grade for my originalbuild are still crazy fast they now beensplit apart to create a secondarystorage drive for game files andscratches for adobe premiere basically Isaw no reason to replace them sincethey're that good I mean while I'veadded this Samsung 970 Evo as my primaryboot drive not only is it fast but alsoquite durable so it should serveperfectly now this setup actuallyhighlights one of the advantages ofAMD's X 399 platform there is no problemusing all these nvme drives with topcrippling my graphics cards or otherattached storage devices and all ofthese have it direct link to the CPUIntel's X $2.99 motherboards can'taccomplish the same thing withoutadditional third party controllersmoving on to a bit more of a simpleupgrade I ended up ditching his singlegtx 980tiand when with two founders edition cardsI know that moving away from the customAsus GTX 10 atti could mean higher GPtemperatures but I like the fact thatthese cars exhaust hot air outside thecase now one thing that I should mentionis I'm not running these cards in SLIbecause I decided to use two GPUs fortwo separate tasks so while I'mrendering a video and gaming I'll haveeach GPU sort of do those tasksseparately while using both of them atthe same time because if you recall whenexplored the options for core affinity Inoticed that running these cards in SLIand doing multiple tasks could actuallyaffect performance and the resultsreally did speak for themselves so I'llactually live leave or link that videoright over here so you can check it outpretty cool interesting results so yeahthat's what I'm goingfor this build just disabling hassle I'mand going with just straight to separateten ATT is asked for the othercomponents I've stuck with the same bequiet dark power 1000 watt power supplyand these amazing looking cablenon-whites Lieb cables which it againreally go well with our stop built sowith that out of the way let's puttogether this beast of the PC andanother build done guys and I have tosay I actually like the looks more thanmy original threat River build but whatdo you guys think is the black and whitebill the bed better than thepredominantly white look from the oldone let us know in the comments downbelow I also didn't go to fancy with RGBlighting in fact there are no RGB fansor even RGB graphics cardsI basically permanently disable thatexcept for the RAM modules and themotherboard lining which I've set towhite to complement the black colorscheme in fact the lighting from the RAMmodules actually separates the coolerwith the motherboard and gives you acool depth effect and overall it justlooks pretty awesome and I can't wait todo some tests on this new PC now I dowant to mention this cooling kit thatasu's offers for their ex we 9 +motherboards and it's designed tooptimize the VR and cooling performanceif people want to overclock the WXseries processor it can also be used incases of high level overclocking on aregular threadripper CPU as well similarkits will be offered for their otherboards too but it won't be included bydefault in the box and you need to askAsus for one directly if you alreadyhave an X - 9 + motherboard or buy froma retailer basically for the zenithboard this cooling kit includes a smallbracket and a small fan that would bemounted to the top mount v arm heatsinkthere's also a secondary heat sink forthe SOC and that will need to beinstalled I also want to mention thatthis kit isn't necessary forcompatibility with the 2990 WX only 2970WX but it's certainly recommended if youintend to overclock those power-hungry250 watt processors another thing that Iwant to mention is some information wedidn't have afor the initial explained video I wantincluded here so basically these are thebiases needed to ensure you're a smartboy is compatible with the secondgeneration 34 CPUs the x2 minions tricksand the prime x3 99 will require the 803or newer versions while the zenith willneed the 1303 version or newer which iswhat I'm using so what's next well it'sactually pretty simple because I stillcan't reveal any of the results orbenchmarks for this new processorbecause you'll have to be a littlepatient just wait until next week untilthe embargo lives and we'll have thoseresults for you guys I'll definitelymake sure to compare the 19th DX to theSkydeck specie that's simply behind meand of course to these new 2950X PC sodefinitely stay tuned for thosecomparisons let's just hope that AMDdoesn't send one of those awesome 2990WX CPUs but other than that our secondgeneration third upper content willcontinue next week with some officialbenchmarks and let me tell you thisthese new CPUs from AMD are definitelygoing to make Intel worried so thatpretty much wraps up this video guys Ihope you enjoyed the second generationthread up or to build video but mostspecifically I want to pass on aquestion to you guys do you stillconsider or would you consider buyingthreadripper 2 knowing for the fact thatit would not give you a significantbenefit or boost performance when itcomes to gaming compared to Ryzen 2 orCoffeelake or do you see yourselftaking advantage of this in yourparticular workflow for example takingadvantage of all these course and do yousee value in that I'd love to hear yourthoughts in the commentsstay subscribe to our channel for evenmore threadripper 2 coverage and ofcourse you can check out our new bootsequence channel for the latest technews and rumors I'm Eber with HardwareCanucks thank you so much for watchingand we'll see you in the next one\n"
