Good Morning to Everyone: A Unique 911 Experience at Luftgekühlt
This morning, I had the pleasure of attending a special event that showcased a truly unique and fascinating car. As a seasoned 911 enthusiast, I have had the privilege of participating in numerous high-performance driving experiences, but this one was particularly exciting due to the car's impressive backstory and specifications.
The car in question is a lovely '79 911 from GProgramm, a company based out of Oyster Bay, New York. This particular vehicle has been driven an impressive 3,500 miles from New York to reach Luftgekühlt, a motorsport event that attracts enthusiasts from all over the world.
The car's appearance is just as impressive as its performance credentials. The '79 911 has undergone extensive modifications, including a complete body job, with media blasting and repainting in a stunning slate gray color. The engine, a 3.4-liter Weber downdraft carburetor twin plug engine, produces an astonishing 350 horsepower, courtesy of the 964 cams installed within its sleek design.
In addition to its powerful engine, this '79 911 boasts an impressive array of upgrades that enhance both its performance and handling capabilities. The suspension has been completely overhauled, with coil-overs Bilstein dampers providing a level of precision and control that is unmatched in the world of high-performance driving. Moreover, the car features Boxster 986 brakes at all four corners, ensuring that stopping power is not compromised.
One of the standout features of this '79 911 is its roll bar, which boasts a vintage design reminiscent of classic racing cars from days gone by. The interior, too, has been tastefully upgraded with comfortable seats and a tartan pattern that adds an air of sophistication to this already impressive vehicle.
As for the gearbox, the car retains its original 915 version 5-speed transmission, a testament to the engineering prowess of Volkswagen's early days. However, it's worth noting that GProgramm specializes exclusively in G-body cars, which means this '79 911 is an example of the best of the breed without being part of the full range.
Despite weighing in at just 2,300 pounds, with a whopping 350 horsepower on tap, this '79 911 promises to be quite an exhilarating driving experience. With its carefully tuned suspension and impressive braking capabilities, it's clear that GProgramm has created a car that is well-suited for high-performance driving.
Now, let's take the car for a spin! According to the guys at GProgramm, I'll need to wind out and put this beast through its paces. As I start up the engine, I can feel the excitement building in the air. The '79 911 feels light and tight beneath me, with my hands firmly grasping the Momo Prototipo steering wheel.
With a gentle touch on the accelerator pedal, I slowly begin to coax this car into action. It's not long before I'm hurtling through the corners, feeling an incredible sense of speed and agility. The front end responds eagerly to my every input, with barely any body roll or understeer noticeable as we zip through the twists and turns.
The sound of the engine is intoxicating, a rich and raspy growl that's music to my ears. With 350 horsepower at our disposal, it's clear that this '79 911 means business – but in a most delightful way. As I continue to push the car to its limits, I'm reminded once again why GProgramm has earned such a reputation among enthusiasts of rare and exotic cars.
This is indeed an experience unlike any other, one that showcases the very best of what this '79 911 has to offer. Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast or simply looking for a unique driving experience, this car is sure to leave a lasting impression.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enGood morning everyone! This should be a treat. They drove this carall the way here from New York, 3,500miles for Luftgekühlt andthis is a lovely looking little '79 911.It's been media blasted right down tothe body, repainted in a lovely slategray. The engine is a 3.4 liter Weberdowndraft carburetor twin plug enginemaking about 350 horsepower. It's got964 cams in it and it soundsthe business the suspension hasbeen completely gone through it's now oncoil overs Bilstein dampers, it has Boxster986 Boxster brakes front and rear, fourPistons at all four corners so it shouldbe pretty thorough stopping powerthere's roll bar vintage style roll barthese lovely comfortable vintage lookseats and a tartan that I really justhave to get my hands on. The gearbox isstill a 915 version 5-speed and thiscompany only does G body cars so it'snot the full back date it's not modern 911sbut only G body cars so this car onlyweighs 2,300 pounds and with350 horsepower on tap it should bequite a riot so let's have ago. Now, according to the guys at GProgramm, I gotta wind out so wind it out I will.Listen to that!It feels light and tight my friends. Light and tight!Nice and solid.Wow very light in the front end throughMomo Prototipo steering wheel. It's got17\" Fuchs reproduction wheels. They'reslightly bigger and we're 255 reartire, Bridgestone Potenza4\" pedals after a little while take some getting used to but oh does it feel good.Very direct steering, not power assisted.Well this is delightful.Sounds the business! Open the taps a bit.5000.Oh yeah!Redline is 6500and brake check. Oh, good. Great heel-toeing action.I feel connected to the machine today.I mentioned before but rather thanthe original torsion beam rearsuspension it's been converted to a coilover so you could have to gusset up thatrear subframe.Feels pretty good to me though. That's delightful, oh that's very good.Well rather than sit behind cars in thislovely piece of hardware, we're gonna flippen ze bitchen righthere and just make ourselves a newdirection. Now I was warned that it's915 gearbox (good turning radius!) I waswarned that this gearbox could be a little...reluctant like all 915 gearboxesbut so far so good.4...5...6... Yes!Well this is very good. This is very good! You might realize that I've got someconfidence in this thing right off the batIt's got a really nice midrange in it.It's got a lot of front tire, seems like it'stramlining a little bit butit might also need some alignment settings after3,500 miles of road trippingacross the US but feels real good. Real good. The seat's very comfortable. It's luxurious but also got really good bolstering, it's holding me in.With these gearboxes you can't power shift; you gotta use some finesse, a slow deliberate lever move. That's feeling very good. We're gonna go up this way there we go.This car's real happy this morning. Making me happy!Just a little hint of understeer on power butthe lift brings it right back. Luftgekühlt!Man, it's got a really goodpower-to-weight ratio definitely enoughpower to get yourself in all kinds oftroubleIt's linear enough and it's not overwhelming to thechassis. That's good. You can drive it like a complete loon if you wanted butit will work with you. It'll work with you all day.It is rewarding.Gear lever throws are pretty long butdirect enough long as you're deliberate with it.Having a good little dance.Lovely day for a drive in Malibu; cool, dense air, medium humidityIt's got 46mm carbs and, to be perfectly honest, I don't know what that means in thegrand scheme of things but they wereawfully proud of it.Well that's something lovely. Really engaging, reallyrewarding and I've found construction. I'll turn around.I'm not gonna bother the gentlemen, they'redoing their job go back the other way. How's reverse? Ah, no problem atallno problem. Okay, downsides. Are there any? Well there's oneand if I'm honest it's kind of a big one.It was an unofficial quote bu when I said\"when you build a car just like thiswhat's the price point?\" They said $200,000. Whoa, $200,000 is quite a lot now it's not tosay that there isn't quite a lot ofengineering in this car, these twin plugengines I hear are quite expensiveandsome might say worth it and this car feelsmostly very sorted. And what is not sorted could be just some fine-tuning.but do I personally feel $200,000 here? Not really. Having said that, do Ipersonally feel $200,000 on a regularG body Carrera that just happens to besome wonky color that's super rare? No,and people pay that all the time so whatdo I know? There's the 'what do I know' example for sure.So price is relative if you can affordit, I can just tell you that it drives beautifullyI can tell you thatPrefer not thinking about what it wouldcost to build one and I can tell youthat it does drive beautifullyand before you commenters saythat's Singer money I do have to tellyou that it is not Singer money.A Singer starts at 400 and goes up to700. So it is roughlyhalf Singer money. Still a ton though. But a beautiful car well sorted andfun to drive.Ah that was a good time, wasn't it? HowdelightfulOh, here's the guys from GProgramm, They want to see me do a pull. Ok, pull.Man, look I get it. This car is 10years older than my Fox Body which Idrove up here this morning and it makes my Fox Bodyfeel, in terms of build quality, like an absolute steaming pile of crap. Imean I'll be honest my Fox Body's great,I love it but compared to the buildquality of something like this even thebasic car, there's no comparison. You can make any car fast, any car. and there's a Nash Metropolitanaround here that runs like 8's. You know making a car fast is only impressive to acertain degree.Quality isalmost irreplaceable-irreplaceable is not the right word. You can't un-shitboxsomething no matter how much money youspend so, by starting with this beautifulwell-made Porsche, you're quite aheadof the game already. I'll say it again doI know if it's worth $200,000? It dependson how much money you have. Ooh, warm brakes. If you don't have $200,000 to burnthen no it's not if you have a lot morethan $200,000 well there' other things you canspend $200,000 on that are fardumber than this but let's not harp onthe price let's just harp on the factthat I'm going to end this video withtwo minutes of twin plug goodness and I'll fadeout check out GProgramm in the description.Okay maybe it wasn't two minutes but I'mback here now. Thank you so much forwatching, thank you to GProgramm forbringing this car out and I'll see you guys nexttime.\n"
