Handmade Halloween Costumes from Hoodies: A Step-by-Step Guide
Hey guys, welcome back to HGTV handmade Halloween month! It's still in full swing and today I have two costumes for you both made out of hoodies. I think that hoodie costumes are a fun way to get in the Halloween spirit while still keeping it casual.
Last week, Kendall Black and Mr McMuffin both requested a black cat Halloween costume, so I'm going to show you a Cat hoodie as well as a shark hoodie. For the Cat hoodie, you will need a hoodie, a giant black pipe cleaner, black felt, a thin black boa, scissors, and a hot glue gun. First, cut a long piece of the black pipe cleaner to serve as the tail. You'll also want to trace and cut a circle out of the felt.
Flip your hoodie over and then find the center. Use your scissors to poke a small hole through the fabric, and stuff the pipe cleaner through the hole. Fold it over just a bit to keep it in place, and we're going to glue the felt circle over the tail so that it doesn't poke you when you put the hoodie on. This method was way more secure than gluing the tail to the outside of the hoodie.
Take a few inches of leftover pipe cleaner and bend at an angle like this. Cut the excess so that you have the shape of a cat ear, before attaching it to your hoodie. Make sure to try on your hoodie so you can find the right position for the ears, and I used these red stickers as placeholders before getting back to work.
For the ears, you'll need rectangular pieces of felt again. Poke holes through the fabric, then push your pipe cleaner ears through the holes, and glue on a piece of felt to protect your head from the sharp ends of the pipe cleaner. We're almost done with the ears just yet! Take a tiny bit of the feather boa and hot glue it to the inside of the ear to fill it out and make it fuzzy.
Now, for the sleeves, I'm going to glue the feather boa down by adding a line of hot glue, then pressing it into the hoodie. Flip the sleeve over and repeat on the other side, keeping going all the way around until you reach the end of the sleeve. Make sure not to squeeze or tighten too much as you glue it down to the sleeves, because in the end, you still want to be able to slip your arm through.
Cut off any excess fabric and now you're all done with your cat costume! No cat costume is complete without a nose and some whiskers, so even though makeup isn't really my forte, I got out some black eyeliner to draw on a nose and a few whiskers to complete the look.
For the shark hoodie, you will need a hoodie, red fabric, black and white felt, a hot glue gun, fabric glue, and scissors. Lay your hoodie down on the red fabric and roughly cut out two pieces of fabric that are slightly larger than the hood. Fold the edge of this piece of fabric and secure it to the hood with fabric glue.
I'm not bringing the red fabric all the way to the edge of the hoodie because that's where the teeth will go, so I'll be continuing this folding and gluing technique on all sides until the red fabric covers the entire inside of the hoodie. To cut the teeth, lay your ruler down a couple of inches from the edge then made marks every 2 inches on all the odd numbers. Move the ruler down about an inch and make marks every 2 inches on all of the even numbers.
Just connect all the dots and now you have your teeth! You're ready to cut it out, but first, fold my felt in half to cut two strips of teeth at once because one strip wasn't long enough to go all the way around the hoodie. Glue the strip of teeth to the edge of the hoodie, then trace and cut two more circles from your black felt.
These will be the eyes again, experiment with the position before you glue them down and that's all there is to it! A cute shark costume if sharks can even be cute, that's what other Halloween costumes would you make out of a hoodie? Let me know in the comments down below. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe, and come back next Wednesday because I'll have a new Halloween video for you then. Bye guys!
