Logitech's Create Backlit Keyboard Case for 9.7in iPad Pro: A Comprehensive Review
Logitech has recently released its Create backlit keyboard case, specifically designed for the smaller 9.7in iPad Pro. This keyboard case leverages a tablet SMART connector port for both data and power, eliminating the need for a separate battery or pairing process. The result is virtually no key lag, making it an ideal option for users who want a seamless typing experience.
The outside of the case is covered with a durable water-resistant textured fabric that feels great in the hand, providing a nice grip and along with the case chassis feels durable and well-built. On the sides are cutouts for iPad speakers, microphone, phon, and cameras, with added key pushers for the volume and power buttons. While the volume controls feel great, the power button itself is a bit stiff. However, the case makes up for this by having a lock and unlock button on the keyboard as well as auto-locking and unlocking when you open or close the case.
The inside seam of the case includes a convenient slot to store your Apple Pencil, with a rubbery material that holds the pencil securely and tucks it out of sight but allows for quick and easy access when needed. To insert your iPad Pro, simply line up the tablet with the hard edges of the case and press down firmly, allowing the iPad to snap in and hold fairly snug to the case wall. Lifting up the case, the SMART connector magnets pull the iPad to the cover and click together automatically, pairing the Create keyboard.
One of the standout features of this keyboard is its top row of convenient shortcut keys, including a home button, brightness adjustment, search, browser keys, backlight settings, music and audio controls, and a dedicated lock button. Unlike Apple's Smart Keyboard, the Create case includes a key mapped to open the iOS soft keyboard for access to Emoji, voice dictation, and other features. The create keyboard's keys are smaller and spaced closer together than a standard Apple keyboard, but we found them very tactile. We were able to type almost as fast and accurately with the Create keyboard as we could with our MacBook Air.
We had the opportunity to use this case on both a desk and in lap position, and it performed well in both situations. However, my only complaint would be the single 55° typing angle, which while not a huge deal, would be nice to have some adjustability for better comfort. The backlighting feature with user-selectable off, low, and high brightness modes is really useful in dimly lit situations, as it helps save power. When the case is turned off after 8 seconds of inactivity, it will turn back on instantly with a press of a key.
One of the most significant advantages of this keyboard case over Apple's Smart Keyboard is its price point. At $129, it's $30 cheaper than the Apple Smart Keyboard and offers more protection and features. However, if having a very slim case for better portability is your top priority, Apple's Smart Keyboard may still be the better choice. But for those looking for a robust feature keyboard case that doesn't compromise on build quality or usability, this is an excellent option.
Overall, Logitech's Create backlit keyboard case for the 9.7in iPad Pro is a fantastic product that offers a seamless typing experience, durable construction, and convenient features like auto-locking and unlocking. With its affordable price point and wide range of features, it's definitely worth considering for anyone looking to upgrade their mobile productivity experience.
