watchOS 7 - my top 10 features for Apple Watch users!

How's it going, ladies and gentlemen, boys, and girls? Thanks for watching 9to5Mac. In this video, we're going to take a look at my top 10 watchOS 7 features.

First off, I want to give a special thanks to our friends at Monowear for sponsoring 9to5Mac. They've been in the Apple Watch band making business for years now, and now they're launching a brand new deployant reserve band featuring a slim design that's perfect for any watch case. The deployant system is designed to make it easy to swap out your strap without having to deal with complicated clips or tools.

Monowear's deployant reserve band comes in several different colors and is made from high-quality materials that will withstand the rigors of daily wear. Whether you're a casual fan of Apple Watch or a serious collector, this new deployant reserve band is definitely worth checking out.

But enough about Monowear - let's get back to watchOS 7. In this video, we'll be counting down my top 10 features, so if you haven't already, make sure to subscribe and hit the notification bell to stay up-to-date on all things Apple Watch.

So, without further ado, let's get started with number 10. At number 10, we have watchOS 7's new animation effects for Memoji and Animoji. One of the coolest features of watchOS 7 is the ability to create custom Memoji faces that react to your movements. This means that if you're wearing a face on your Apple Watch, it will respond to your taps and gestures in a way that feels super realistic.

But what's even cooler than just watching an animation effect - is creating your own animations effects using watchOS 7's built-in Memoji editing app. With this app, you can create custom animations for your Memoji faces, add them to new watch faces, and even share them with friends. It's a super powerful feature that opens up all sorts of creative possibilities.

Let's take a look at one of the new watch faces that supports Memoji animations - the cow face. As I mentioned earlier, this watch face features a cow face that will rotate every time you wake your Apple Watch. But what really makes it special is the ability to customize the cow face with different animations and expressions.

For example, if you tap on the cow's nose, it will blink. If you tap on its ears, they'll move up and down. It's a super fun feature that adds a whole new level of personality to your Apple Watch. And with watchOS 7, you can customize the cow face in all sorts of ways using the Memoji editing app.

Now, let's talk about another new watch face that supports Memoji animations - the GMT face. This watch face features a world clock display that allows you to quickly cycle through different time zones around the globe. But what really makes it special is the ability to customize the background with different colors and images.

For example, if you tap on the GMT face, it will show you a map of the world with the current time displayed in each time zone. It's a super useful feature that can help you stay on top of your schedule no matter where you are in the world. And with watchOS 7, you can customize the background image to fit your personal style.

Next up at number 9, we have the Chronograph Pro face. This watch face features a built-in tachymeter that allows you to measure speed and distance using just one tap of the Apple Watch button. It's a super handy feature that can be useful for athletes, cyclists, or anyone who needs to track their progress.

One of the coolest things about the Chronograph Pro face is the way it integrates with the built-in GPS on your Apple Watch. When you start tracking your distance or speed, the watch will automatically switch to GPS mode and display your data in real-time. It's a super powerful feature that can help you stay on top of your fitness goals.

At number 8, we have the Artist face. This watch face features a dynamic image display that changes depending on what you're doing - whether it's watching TV, browsing social media, or playing games. The image is generated using a machine learning algorithm that learns your habits and preferences over time.

One of the coolest things about the Artist face is the way it integrates with Siri. When you ask Siri to show you something interesting, she'll display an animated graphic on your Apple Watch based on what's trending in real-time. It's a super fun feature that can help make your daily commute or downtime more engaging.

Next up at number 7, we have the Typograph face. This watch face features a font-based design that allows you to customize everything from the text size and color to the background image and symbols. It's a super powerful feature that can help you personalize your Apple Watch to fit your personal style.

One of the coolest things about the Typograph face is the way it integrates with the built-in complications. For example, if you add the date complication to your watch face, it will display the current date in a custom font that's perfect for reading on-the-go. It's a super useful feature that can help you stay organized without having to look at your iPhone.

At number 6, we have the Stripes face. This watch face features a striped design that's incredibly customizable - from the color and pattern of each stripe, to the size and spacing between them. It's a super fun feature that can help add some personality to your Apple Watch collection.

One of the coolest things about the Stripes face is the way it integrates with the built-in animations effects. When you tap on the stripes, they'll move up and down in a way that feels super realistic. It's a super powerful feature that can help make your Apple Watch feel more like a high-end smartwatch.

Next up at number 5, we have the Sports face. This watch face features a sports-inspired design that includes features such as GPS tracking, heart rate monitoring, and activity logging. It's a super useful feature that can help you track your fitness progress and stay motivated to reach your goals.

One of the coolest things about the Sports face is the way it integrates with the built-in complications. For example, if you add the step tracker complication to your watch face, it will display your daily steps in real-time using a colorful bar graph that's easy to read on-the-go. It's a super powerful feature that can help you stay on track and reach your fitness goals.

At number 4, we have the Photo face. This watch face features a photo-based design that allows you to display any image or video from your iPhone camera roll. It's a super fun feature that can help add some personality to your Apple Watch collection.

One of the coolest things about the Photo face is the way it integrates with the built-in animations effects. When you tap on a picture, it will animate in a way that feels super realistic - whether it's moving around or changing color. It's a super powerful feature that can help make your Apple Watch feel more like a high-end smartwatch.

Next up at number 3, we have the Music face. This watch face features a music-inspired design that includes features such as Spotify integration and music playback controls. It's a super useful feature that can help you stay entertained on-the-go.

One of the coolest things about the Music face is the way it integrates with the built-in animations effects. When you start playing music on your Apple Watch, the watch will display animated graphics that match the beat and tempo of the music - it's a really cool feature that can add some personality to your Apple Watch collection.

At number 2, we have the Fitness face. This watch face features a fitness-inspired design that includes features such as GPS tracking, heart rate monitoring, and activity logging. It's a super useful feature that can help you track your fitness progress and stay motivated to reach your goals.

One of the coolest things about the Fitness face is the way it integrates with the built-in complications. For example, if you add the step tracker complication to your watch face, it will display your daily steps in real-time using a colorful bar graph that's easy to read on-the-go. It's a super powerful feature that can help you stay on track and reach your fitness goals.

And finally, at number 1, we have the new animation effects for Memoji faces. As I mentioned earlier, one of the coolest features of watchOS 7 is the ability to create custom animations for your Memoji faces - whether it's blinking eyelids, waving arms, or even just changing color.

The new animation effects are powered by a machine learning algorithm that learns your habits and preferences over time. This means that if you're always wearing a particular Memoji face on your Apple Watch, the algorithm will learn to anticipate when you might want to switch to a different one - it's a super clever feature that can help make your daily commute or downtime more engaging.

But what really makes these animation effects stand out is the way they integrate with Siri. When you ask Siri to show you something interesting, she'll display an animated graphic on your Apple Watch based on what's trending in real-time. It's a super fun feature that can help add some personality to your daily life - and it's just one of many cool features that make watchOS 7 the best smartwatch operating system yet.

That's all for today's video, folks! I hope you enjoyed counting down my top 10 features of watchOS 7. Thanks for watching, and until next time...

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: en- How's itgoing, ladies and gentlemen, boys, and girls thanksfor watching 9to5Mac.In this video, we take a lookat my top 10 watchOS 7 features.Check it out right now, butfirst a word from our sponsors.Special thanks to our friends at Monowearfor sponsoring 9to5Mac.They've been in the AppleWatch band making businessfor years now.And now they're launchinga brand new deployant reserve band, featuring a slim deployant bucklethat completes the modest elegant lookand is made from the highest grade, full grain in align leather. And just like the new deployant band, the classic leather band now comes inthe awesome burnt orange color. So you can make it as sad if you want to.And to complete the trifecta there isthe perforated leatherban with again, yes, that awesome burnt orangecolorway that looks fantastic. And Monowear has tons of different styles, including the urban canvas band. The bottom line is you'regoing to find somethingthat looks good with your Apple Watch.Click the link in the descriptionand special things to Monowearfor sponsoring 9to5Mac.Up until now, if you wantedto give an Apple watchto a family member, they wouldneed their own paired iPhone. But watchOS 7 eliminates this requirementthanks to a new family setup feature. You could see the first few Apple Watchesthat I have paired to my iPhone. But notice below you see family watchesand this is possible things to watchOS 7'snew family setup feature. So in a nutshell familyset up allows you to set upand manage an Apple Watch for your childor for any member of your family, say an older one in your family. This allows them to havean Apple Watch as wellwithout them needing to havetheir own independent iPhone as well.So you can set up all thesefamily watches on your iPhoneand then give them to your family members. So all you do instead ofselecting set up for myselfyou select set up for a family member. Now to use this service, the Apple Watch has to beat least an Apple Watch Series 4 or higherand it must be cellular enabled. But if the watch meets those requirementsthey'll be able to take advantage of allthe great Apple Watch features, the activity and workout features. The fall detection if it's an older one.Messages to stay in contact. So if you have young children, they can have this Apple watch onand you can stay in touch with them. And of course the trackingfunctionality as well.So you can keep tabson your small childrenso that you always know where they are.And of course they canuse all the great appsthat come with the Apple Watch. They can download third party apps.If your family memberreally meets the criteriamaybe they're reallyyoung or they're olderthey're not comfortable with a smartphone, this can be a big help. And watchOS 7 has some reallygreat Siri enhancements.A couple really stand out to me.How do you say hello in Japanese? So you have on device translation- In Japanese hello is(foreign language)- That is super cool.Let's try it again. How do you say goodbye in Spanish?- In Spanish goodbye is adios.Adios.Adios- And for the first timethere is on device dictation. So even if you're offline, you're not connected tothe internet watch this.Write a post about the newApple Watch as soon as possibleperiod.Notice how fast andaccurate the dictation is.And watchOS 7 brings fortha brand new Memoji app.So you'll find all of your Memojithat you've created onyour iPhone available here. You can go in, you can viewthose Memoji characters. You can go in and edit those characters. And you can even create abrand new Memoji character. The really awesome thingabout this whole setup, this whole application isthat it literally has all ofthe same Memoji characteristicsthat you'll find on the iPhone. So all the customizationthat you can do on the iPhoneyou can do right here on your wrist. So that means all thevarious colors are availablefor like skin. You have freckles for the face. And that's honestly thevery tip of the iceberg. There are so many customization optionsto really create a Memoji characterthat looks exactly like youor maybe you don't want itto look like you at all.Maybe you want it to lookcompletely different. You can make basically any characterthat you want to with thisapplication right on your wrist. Now, when I first tried theMemoji app on the Apple watch.I thought for sure it would belike a dumbed down version ofthe iPhone editor, but no.All the editing optionsare here on the Apple Watchand it's pretty impressive. So once you finish making your characteryou can save that character. It will sync with your iPhone. So you will have the samecharacter on the iPhone. You can use those Memojis in messages, just like you wouldnormally do on the iPhone, but on the Apple Watch. You can actually take it a step further.Let me show you what I mean here.So I'm going to tap on that character. If I scroll all the way down, look what you have there. You can actually createyes, a brand new watch facebased on the Memoji characterthat you just created. You see it appear there. So when you tap on the characterit will actually react to your taps.Just like that, pretty cool. And the animal or theAnimojis are there as wellon this watch face has options. So you can go in,go into edit mode for that watch faceand edit the character justby turning the digital crown. You can also switch over to an Animoji. We'll show that later. And you can also choosethe background colorand last but not leastyou can also add your owncomplications as well.So have I the date and I have the weather. So there we go.What do you guys thinkabout Memoji editingand the watch face?So let me know down below in the comments. Now while we're on thesubject of watch faces, let's go ahead and show them off now.All the new ones for watchOS 7.Of course, like I mentioned you havethe Memoji/Animoji watch face.So you have the cow.And this one said twoto basically just rotateevery time you wake your watchit will show a new character. And all the Animoji are there. You can choose to show a single oneor you can choose to cycle through. And yes indeed, the characters will havetheir own custom animation.Pretty awesome. All right. So here is the GMT watch face.So this is sort of like a world clockthat allows you to quicklycycle through various locationsaround the world. And it will display thecurrent time in that location. It's a really cool watch face.I like it.Very responsive. And if you travel a lot, this could be the watchface for you for sure. All right, so let's talk aboutthe next new watch face in watchOS 7.You have the Chronograph Prowith the builtin tachymeter. So you just tap on it likethat to start the tachymeterwhich is a handy way for measuring speed. And one of my favorite new watch faces isthe artist's watch face. And when you tap it the imagechanges dynamically like that. It's very Picasso likeand with just the tap,you can switch it up.And then you have the typograph font.Let's go in here andchange up some things here.So you have the dial. You can adjust that just like that.Swipe over and you canchange the different styleswhich changes up the font.Pretty cool. And you also have symbols. So you can switch betweenRoman numerals, for instance, and Arabic symbols. Now one of my favorite new watch faces, arguably the best new watchface, is the stripes watch facebecause it is incredibly customizableright here on your watch.I just think it's so coolhow they lead this out.You can literally changeevery single stripe color independently. You can also adjust theamount of stripes displayed. You can also adjust the anglethat the stripes are displayedit's easy to make it gowith whatever you're wearing at the time.I think it's one of the best new faces. Now we finally have theability to share watch facesin watchOS.All you need to do iswhen you edit a watch facetap the share buttonand you can quickly sendyour configured faceto one of your contacts. You can even choose to include the dataor not include the datarelated to the complications. So I just sent this watch face to a friendand they can download it on their watch.Super simple, super easy. And here's one someone sent to me.So you can see justtap it to add the face, tap the add button,I like that face by the way,and it adds the face just like that.Super simple, super easy. Now of course you can go intothe full size watch app on your iPhoneand go in and customizethis thing even more, make any adjustments you want to make. You want to change it.You can do so with ease. And then you can sendit back to your friendand say, \"Hey, you shouldhave designed it like this.\"It'll even include all the complicationsthat you have set up.And if they don't have theapp already it will suggestthat they download the apprelated to those complications. And sharing it as super easy. You can even download watchfaces from the app storeand the same principle applies. So if you download aface and you don't havethe app related to thecomplications it includesit will suggest you download that app,as it's going to do right here.So it wants me to downloadDawn Patrol for surf trackingand I'll do that.So the app is downloading. It includes those complications. And once the app has finished downloadingeverything will be set up just like that.So let's go over to our Applewatch and let's check it out.So there we go.That's the, the watchface I just downloadedwith Dawn Patrol complications. Now that's not all.You can also downloadwatch faces from the webor you can download themdirectly from apps themselves. So here's a watch face Idownloaded directly fromthe Carrot Weather appand you can see all those complicationsare Carrot Weather related. So just with a couple of tapsI have an extremelyrobust weather watch face. Now complications get ahuge upgrade and watchOS 7.First of all, you get anew complications browserright here on your Apple watch. And for apps that havemultiple complications, you'll see a more buttonthat allows you to viewall those complicationsright there in one handy list.So the weather app isa good example of this, but third party apps canwork that way as well. But by far the coolest newcomplication related feature isthe ability to add multiple complicationsfrom the same application.Previously, you only get accessto one complication per app.Now in watchOS 7, you canhave a whole watch face fieldwith complications from the same app.Just like I showed youearlier with Carrot Weather. That is awesome. Now there's also somenew complications added, like the sleep complicationfor the new sleep app.I'll show you that in a little bit.And now you can invokethe camera remote directlyfrom the watch facethanks to a new cameraremote complication.I'll show you that right here.So you can just addthat to your watch faceand that will launch yourcamera on your iPhonewith just a tap.But here's a really coolfeature that I like. Now I like to create shortcutsto control some of myhome kit enabled devices. So here I've created simple shortcutto turn my studio lights on or offto toggle them on or off.And now you'll find complicationsfor individual shortcuts. So I can invoke any shortcutthat I have right therefrom my watch face. That is super cool.So here in this example,I can turn my studio lights on or off, simply, well actuallyI have to do two tapsbecause unfortunately you have to confirmbut still awesome as you can seelaunching shortcuts directlyfrom the watch face. Now, if you're an Applewatch workout junkieyou'll definitely appreciatethe four new workouts availablestarting with functionalstrength training. And I love the little animationsthat these workouts providein the upper left hand corner there. You also have dance. So you can work up a sweat ifyou're doing a dance class, but on the inverse there'salso a cool-down workoutwith corresponding stretching animation. And finally, there's acore training workout. So four brand new workouts for watchOS 7.Now here's something that I'vebeen wanting for a long time. The ability to customize activity goals. You can do that now bytapping change goals atthe bottom of the activity app. Now, of course you canchange your calories. Now you can also change exercisegoal and your stand goal.So say you're a commercial truck driveror whatever the case may be.You can change that stand goalinto something a littlebit more realistic. And if I scroll all the wayup you can see those goalsadjust automatically rightthere on my activity rings. Now on watchOS 7 theApple watch can detectwhen you start washing your handsand it can encourage you to keep going forthe time recommended byvarious health organizations. So it will noticeautomatically recognizehand-washing motionand then present acountdown on the screen. So you can count downand make sure you washyour hands long enough. It can also remind you when you get hometo wash your hands as well afteryou've been out for awhile. And then you get a nice little thumbs uponce you're complete.Just like iOS 14, watchOS 7features a brand new sleep app.The sleep app can help chartand track your sleep throughout the night. It also helps you winddown when trying to sleepand we'll introduce do notdisturb, to keep your watchfrom alerting you whenit's time to go to bed.So here is the sleep app.And it's filled with dataabout your recent sleeps. So you have your bedtime and wake up time.So we're going to gointo the full schedule, make sure your sleep schedule is enabledand there we can setup our first schedule. Now you'll also see sleep goals. So you can set up the amountof time you wish to sleepand this will helpthe sleep app recommend a bedtime for you.I'm going to make it realisticand say six hours and 30 minutes.Hopefully I can improve on that over time. You also have wind down. We'll talk about that a little bit later. Now let's go up to our full scheduleand let's go ahead and set that up.So we're just going to tapwhere it says full schedule.Tap, Set Your First Schedule. And first you want toconfigure when sleep is active. So you can set it for all daysor you can go in and disable certain days.I'm just going to have itactive on the weekdays. So I'm going to disable the weekend.Tap Done. You can see it's active on weekdays. Now you want to set up your wake up time. And this is the time thatyou want your Apple watchto wake you up via either anaudible alarm or via haptics. So I'll set 6:00 am there. Now, since I have my watchmuted or on silent modethe song that I choose willactually play back via hapticsor taps on your wrist. And then you can select your bedtimeand that'll be based onthe recommendation from your sleep goal.So that will automatically be populated, but you can go in and adjust thatto whatever you want it to be.But because my sleep goalwas six hours and 30 minutes,it recommends 11:30.All right,so we have our full scheduleset up for the weekdays. You can add anotherschedule if you want to,but we'll just keep it simple for now.And now you can go down to wind downand you can enable that. And basically what this will dois basically prepare you for sleep mode.So it'll for instance, turn on, do not disturb. It'll suggest maybe anapp that you like to use.It can dim your lights, for instance.Basically just get your mindprepared to go to sleep. So that is basically how you set upthe sleep mode here on watchOS 7.Now let's talk about the trackingportion of the sleep app.So if you scroll all theway down to the bottom here, you'll see your data.So you can see my last sleepfive hours and 32 minutes.Didn't do that, great. You can see the littlebreaks in the line there. Those are times when I was,I guess, restless duringthe night and I woke up.Then you could see your last14 days of data as well. Now, if you want even more verbose data, you want to see more details. You could simply head over tothe health app on your paired iPhone. There's where you'll findall of your sleep data. And the nice thing about the sleep app isthat you can go in and changean alarm on a onetime basis. So if I say,\"Hey, I don't want to wakeup tomorrow at 6:00 am.I want to change that actually.I want an extra hour of sleep.\"So I'm going to set it for 7:00.Well, that is, that appliesto the next wake up onlyas you can see there. So this will only be for the next wake upthen it will revert back toyour original sleep schedule. So if I tap full schedule you can seethe original schedulestill waking up at 6:00 am.So I have adjusted the scheduleso that I can basicallysimulate what it'll be likeonce wind down kicks in.And you can see,do not disturb isautomatically enabled therefor the wind down. And in the status area you can seethat do not disturb is indeed enabledgetting you prepared for sleep mode. Now one sleep mode is actually enabledthis is what you're going to seea completely blink watch face.So it's not going to wakeyou up during the night.Even if you have it always owned display, the display will stay offunless you intentionally awake the device. And even then it's dim.And it basically just has the current timeand your current alarm wake up time. Now, if you want toactually turn your device onyou actually have to turnthe digital crown to force it to wake up.And you could see the sleepmode option at the top ofthe status bar area letting you knowthat your watch is still in sleep mode.I like this because if you're,if you're restless during the nightand you're moving your arms aroundit's not going to wake the deviceand turn the screen onand make it real brightwhich can disturb the sleep of others. So once the alarm goes off,in this case, I have silent mode enabled. So I'm actually being tappedon my wrist right now.And it's tapping to the theme of the song, which is really cool. But I find that thiswakes me up pretty wellwhen I'm sleepingand it doesn't really abother anyone else around me.And then I can stop. And then you get this righthere a nice little cardthat tells you goodafternoon or good morningdepending on time of day.It gives you the current time.It tells you your currentbattery percentage. It even tells you the current weather. And if you get up andstart going about your daywithout disabling the alarm, the watch will recognize thatand say, \"Hey, looks like you're awake.Would you like to turn off your alarm?\"And you can do so so that youwon't be further disturbed. But like I was saying earlier,if you go into the health appand go into the sleep section of the appyou'll find even more verbosedata on your sleep activityincluding the average time asleep, the average time in bed.And you can even get moredata on a monthly basis. So ladies and gentlemen, that has been a look at
