Unnamed Car Buying Show - Find an EV for $30k and $60k

The Art of Car Buying: A Pragmatic Approach

In this episode of The Name Car Buying Show, our host takes on the challenge of finding the best car in two different price categories: $30,000 and $60,000. With a clear head and a pragmatic approach, our host navigates the world of cars, weighing the pros and cons of each model.

The $30,000 category presents a tough decision, as our host is drawn to both the Tesla Model 3 and the Audi GT. However, with a focus on practicality, our host decides that neither car is perfect, but rather "good enough." They note that if you had $60,000 to burn, you wouldn't buy either of these cars, opting for something more fun. In this case, however, our host is looking for a reliable and affordable option.

The Tesla Model 3 takes center stage in this category, with its impressive range and eco-friendly credentials. Our host appreciates the car's driving dynamics, noting that it handles well. However, they also acknowledge the limitations of the car's range and charging capabilities. In contrast, the Audi GT offers a more exciting driving experience, but at a higher price point.

In the end, our host decides to go with the Tesla Model 3, citing its practicality and affordability as the top reasons for their choice. They note that while it may not be the most exciting car on the market, it is a reliable and sensible option for those looking to save money.

Meanwhile, in the $60,000 category, our host is faced with an even tougher decision. The Lucid Air takes center stage, with its impressive range and luxurious interior. However, our host notes that the car's price point may be a bit steep, especially considering its limited range. In contrast, the Audi e-tron offers a more practical option, with a longer range and more affordable price tag.

Despite the temptation of the Lucid Air, our host decides to go with the Audi e-tron, citing its practicality and affordability as the top reasons for their choice. They note that while the Lucid Air may be a more exciting car, it is not worth the extra cost.

A Unique Purchase Opportunity

In a surprising twist, one of the cars being sold is already owned by the buyer, having been purchased just under $40,000 and then traded in 2,000 miles later. Our host is intrigued by this development and decides to investigate further. They note that the car has only 2100 miles on it, which is relatively low compared to other vehicles of its age.

Despite some initial reservations about the car's price point, our host decides to give it a chance. They are drawn to the car's unique features, such as its driving lights and single driver setup. While they acknowledge that the car may not be the most conventional choice, they appreciate its individuality and style.

A Realistic Purchase Experience

Our host notes that they have purchased cars before, but this experience is particularly realistic. They are reminded of their own struggles with affording a plane ticket to visit the dealership, and the stress of possibly being the victim of a bait-and-switch scam.

In contrast, this purchase is made possible by the seller's willingness to part with the car for a fair price. Our host notes that they have been able to find a deal on a Volvo S60, which will allow them to go on vacation after their new car is purchased.

A Final Verdict

In the end, our host emerges as a pragmatic and sensible car buyer, having found two excellent options in each category. While neither car may be perfect, they have chosen the most practical and affordable option in each case.

As for the winner of this episode's challenge, our host notes that while both cars have their strengths and weaknesses, the Tesla Model 3 takes the prize. They acknowledge that it is a more conventional choice, but one that offers exceptional value for its price point.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhello and welcome to another episode of the unnamed car buying show I'm once again joined by my friend and colleague Lynn Woodward hello Lynn hi uh today we're doing something that's a bit more focused on something consumers actually want that aren't project vehicles for overlanding and cheap V8s um so today we're looking at an inexpensive and then a more moderately expensive electric vehicle uh our first one is going to be limited to $30,000 which yes is extremely possible right now and the second one is $660,000 cuz let's pretend we get some fun money and we don't want to buy a Tesla so you go first what is your pick for the $30,000 electric vehicle okay my 30 grand pick or under 30 grand and last pick is a 2023 Nissan Arya it is a front-wheel drive only um but you guys couple things about this car that I really like first of all I really like how this looks this one also comes in Black it's like black on light gray so it looks like kind of badass if I can say that about a Nissan that's not a GTR there you go right um I just think it looks kind of cool like it's got like kind of like I don't know if Batman maybe drove a a electric car in his real life it would kind of look like this um no I mean I like that it's fully loaded I like that I like that it's extremely low mileage mileage is for those of you who can't see it's just over 4,000 miles which is awesome basically a new car that's so I have some pros on this go for it this one is the Empower plus this one is super high on the trim walk um so you're going to be getting a lot of stuff when you get inside this car you're looking at a really cool looking interior um you get like really cool materials in there um it's kind of like fun to look at and um I think it's really great uh I also really like how this thing drives um I felt like I had a little bit of fun in it when I took it Drivin in Tennessee was kind of kind of cool um it does have a little bit of like some cons um it does not have a true one pedal driving mode okay which is a little bit of a bummer um just because I actually enjoy one pedal driving mode I think that's kind of fun um but and it doesn't have like great off-the-line speed so you have like you're not going to have like oh smoke you off the line fun right that being said you know I think there are different ways to appreciate an electric vehicle this one does have the 90 wat 91 kilow hour battery so it's got the large battery on it which is great 289 miles of range and um it has so many gizmos in it to kind of help you track where you're going to find charging stations that um I think it's a a good complete package basically a new car for less than $30,000 and uh yeah I think this one and because it's my pick is going to be tough to beat okay well here's my pick and I went extremely boring but smart for someone who wants to spend $330,000 or less on an EV and that's because I went with of course I did um let me pull it up a Tesla a model 3 2022 I know there were a lot of Teslas under $30,000 too which is uh with a wide range of miles I almost went with a performance but that would be a more fun version but that had 40,000 more miles than this one which has just under 15,000 mil so the reason I picked this is because it's kind of a no brainer choice where I don't love Tesla I don't think it's nice inside however it's fine and if you're spending this much money on an EV it means you probably just want it to commute it's hard to beat the range this is over 350 Mi of range it's hard to beat the charge you can't beat the charging infrastructure um and then this since this is you know the the long range version It's kind of The Best of Both Worlds it's it's a one-owner car it's someone the problem is though it's in Hawaii right right now because it's owned by someone in the military who they're selling it because they're moving to Japan um so it's it seems like it's an honest seller who says they priced it at the lower end because they need to get rid of it so it'd be a good one to take off someone's hand and that explains why it has you know low mileage because they live on Hawaii and Hawaii and um I don't listen I'm not happy with this choice I looked at Kia I almost went with an ev6 um but it was like you couldn't get above the wind trim which is a fine trim but you you this was all rear wheel drive versions you couldn't get a GT line definitely couldn't get a GT um there were some NE nice ionic sixes but then the rest were like Mini Coopers and and high mileage maky and yeah your choice is is more interesting I will say that my choice is just better yeah I I mean I saw all the the the proliferation of Teslas and um I kind of thought it felt it felt a little like an obvious choice but then I think good reason why it feels like the obvious choice they're ubiquitous the charging infrastructure is unbe unbeatable I mean so much so that everybody's jumping in on it right right Mercedes like GM like everybody's like can I play in your supercharging party pool please yes so you know plus you get that killer range I mean having the extended battery version of this I think is pretty solid um yeah I I mean I probably I'm gonna have to give this part of this one to you yeah yeah Rel reluctantly because no no I whatever you I didn't want to pick it I didn't I didn't want to pick it yeah but it is a smart choice at that price and that's a really good deal now yes I'm going to move on to my $60,000 one because this is where the the waters opened up and we had we were Pig time swimming for choices I'm GNA pick one I think I'm going to win this one because I'm shocked that I found this uh I'm going to send it over to you it might be then the one that I picked and then I abandoned if you think you're winning it because I had a great one and then I was like that's not practical then okay let me see I sent my pick over oh it's a 2023 Lucid air pure with 2,000 miles on it for 59 995 I didn't look hard enough this is the rear wheel drive this is the the you know the one that's the the baby of the bunch but even at the low end I think it's north of 400 horse it has over 400 mil of range it looks fantastic the interior is great um I'm sorry before I even see yours I think I won erk I think you won twoo before I'm even sharing mine because I almost went with the tyon which is I'm what I'm guessing you probably won with but go send no I'm a loser I'm such a loser because I was like well if you have $60,000 you can probably buy a new whatever you want and so you're like there was an Audi there was an rron GT in there that I was like no I'm not I saw an ev9 but let's see what you get so dumb you're I can't believe I found the Lucid so that's incredible I almost feel like it's a scam but they they do start in the 60s for the pure so this is so stupid let's see I think I'm so stupid at this point okay so my really cool guy expensive pick and there's a reason why I picked so I picked a 2022 Volvo xc40 recharge but when you start digging into it this is like such a steal yes we have low range it's only 223 miles which is kind of a boo like a bummer but this one has extremely low miles on it as far as a new car goes um and The Styling is great you're going to get all of Volvo's like safety features and crap like that but a couple of things that I do love about this car the guy and the ad is hilarious because he's like single driver like literally no one else has sat in any of the other seats of this car like zero people wild yeah so it's a private seller it literally has like 8,000 miles on it um you are getting a brand new car yeah like is insane and you would pay so much more money for this if you were buying it um just outright plus I don't know why but the guy put like rally lights on the front of I mean so he's in the seller is in Washington so maybe they're in like a more remote area and they just needed the extra lights but but yeah those giant Pia driving lights are are kind of insane it's I I see no reason why plus he's very clearly just himself if no one else has literally sat there but in any other seat of this car it's a little bit of a heads scratcher um and he's like he's very adamant he's like cash only literally all the cash and if you do this I'm not going to do this and if you do you know no private seller exchange emails please like so he's cash only I know it's it's kind of Hardcore but it's always this guy needs to get out of the country he really like yeah he needs he needs to be liquid super fast yeah so all of that notwithstanding I kind of thought well like this is this is a iCal car but you know what if you had $60,000 to burn you wouldn't buy this one you would more fun you came in at just under $40,000 though cash only is is kind of a it's a tough yeah and I love the color oh here I have some in my pocket I think the driving lights are are an odd but in fun choice I think it looks fantastic the single driver thing is insane so it is a wonderful example of that vehicle however it is not a lucid air not by a long shot even if it's just the Lucid pure um I mean I with 2100 miles on it I mean come on that's I mean you are right at your limit too though like you can't even yeah yeah no like you you can't afford the plane ticket to go I got to look see where it is because I I don't know if I can get to where I need to go get it um it is that's not what the game is the game yeah for sure it's from a dealer though so I'm hoping there's not a bait and switch that's going to happen when I do order it oh it's in Michigan uh still that's you know people there yeah I can have someone go get it um but if if it's 59 yeah I wonder who bought it drove 2,000 miles and then traded but I want to know is which interior did they choose which gorgeous delightful all-encompassing interior it's a white interior so that's also tough but um oh it says white and the listing but then you click into the photos and it's definitely not white so that's weird uh so now I'm already getting second thoughts but if this is a legit having second thoughts too because here's the deal I always thought that the front of the the front of the car was like a darker color but then the back of the car was a lighter color and this one is the same color front and back like that's so interesting okay um and but there is a there is a photo of the odometer that is like only 3 miles away from what the or a few well 30 I can't do math right now 60 miles away from what the uh it says so it's pretty accurate um so I I'm going to assume this is real I'm going to assume this is legit because it's not far from the actual brand new price of a pure um so I I don't want to declare myself the winner but I'm going to in this case because um I I think the Tesla wins even though it's boring and the Lucid wins cuz it's insane cuz it's awesome I will I will corroborate your um your your thinking so I will definitely give you this one even though I'm going to say this both of my picks are very practical and I think very affordable which I'm a very pragmatic person so there you go um I think they suit they suit that just fine I did think about the Audi GT as well as some other nuggets but um but I was just trying to complete the assignment which was more practical I was trying to win it difference thank you for watching on name car buying show all right I guess that's fine so we're now even all right uh for those uh 100 of you watching um let us know which car in the comments you think wins in the 30,000 and $60,000 category and then go find one and post a link to something better because there's a lot of tyon out there and I can be swayed with a tyon over a lucid even though has more a better driving range um and the interior it's a tossup of which one you think is nicer on the inside between the tyon and the Lucid unless you're at like the top spec you know GTP Sapphire range of loose heads even though they're pretty similar on the inside um no I would that that locid handles like a champ yeah it does car it really does the porsa handle great too but the Lucid people are be shocked to find out how well they handle um so there you go thanks for watching this episode Lynn thanks again for two very pragmatic smart choices um and you Sav $20,000 on your Volvo over my that's right you can go on vacation after you get your Volvo people yeah and I can't even afford to charge it uh because I have no money left uh there you go all right thanks for watching this round of the unnamed car buying show nhello and welcome to another episode of the unnamed car buying show I'm once again joined by my friend and colleague Lynn
