**Unboxing and First Impressions: Sony Xperia XE Premium**
As I held the phone in my hands, I couldn't help but notice its sleek design. On the right side, we have a dedicated camera shutter button, fingerprint sensor (although it's disabled for the US market), and volume rocker. The phone has a bit of a nick on it, but I think this adds character to the device. I'm assuming that this type of damage makes the phone pretty sturdy.
Looking at the top, we get a better view of the chamfer and brushed aluminum finish. There's also a microphone and a headphone jack on the left hand side. We have a nano SIM card slot and a microSD card slot below. On the bottom, we find another microphone and a USBC charging port that supports Quick Charge 3.0.
I got a good look at the display, which is a 5.5-inch 4K IPS triluminous screen. The first thing I noticed was how bright and vivid it looked, especially compared to the Sony Z5 Premium's screen. The HDR video on this phone looks amazing, with better contrast and a more immersive experience.
The XE Premium comes with Android Nougat, IP68 rating, Gorilla Glass 5 protection, and a 64GB of internal storage with 4GB of RAM. It also has stereo speakers, but I'm not sure how well they'll perform in real-world usage. One thing that's concerning me is the small 3,230mAh hour battery. If we're going to run the UI and apps in 4K mode, I don't see how this battery will be able to last.
Sony has been advertising its "Smart Stamina" mode, which studies your usage and tells when to turn on the stamina mode to prevent the battery from draining out before the end of the day. They also have Adaptive Charging, which focuses on battery health. However, I'm not convinced by these power-saving features, especially with the small battery size.
**Camera Capabilities**
The camera on this phone is a 19-megapixel sensor with larger pixels for better low-light performance. Sony claims that both the XE Premium and the Xperia ZS have similar camera features, so we'll be using the Xperia ZS for comparison purposes. The camera has a super slow-motion mode that can capture small bursts of 960 frames per second.
I was able to see some pre-animated demos and then get to try it myself. The slow-motion mode works by recording video and allowing you to press the slow-motion button after every burst, which takes a few seconds before you can do it again. This means you can take as many slow-motion shots in the same video as you want.
However, I noticed that executing the super slow-motion mode crops the image, and in less than perfect lighting, it can look incredibly noisy very quickly. Having your subject well-lit is absolutely necessary for the best result. Overall, this phone looks fantastic, and its camera capabilities seem exciting if Sony follows through with them.
**Release Date and Availability**
I'm hearing different bits of information from various Sony reps, but it seems that the XE Premium will be released later in the spring, probably around June. I'm disappointed that the fingerprint sensor is going to be disabled again, but there are options like purchasing an international version or flashing a different region ROM to the phone.
I want to emphasize that announcing things early can lead to people forgetting about them and having already bought something else. This review will be my last for now, so I hope you found this article informative and entertaining. found myself at the Sony Booth taking a look at the Sony Xperia xzs and the Xperia XZ premium interesting names the star of the show here is definitely the premium which I'm calling the successor to the Xperia Z5 premium it comes in two different extremely reflective colors luminous Chrome and deep sea black nearly the entire body is reflect with large bezels at the top and at the bottom and I actually like the reflective body as it feels like I'm holding on to a precious gem of some kind but yes they are both extremely finger printy and serve as a perfect vanity mirror particularly the Chrome one now the software isn't final so I will revert to the xzs for features that are the same such as the motion Eye camera the only thing that I was allowed to show on camera from the premium was the home screen but I can tell you that what I did see on it was very half-baked and didn't work for demonstration purposes so I would rather just show you a shiny macroshot Montage so that you can at least get up close and personal with the phone so on the front is a 5.5 in 4k IPS Tri luminous display we've got a 13 megapixel front-facing camera ambient light sensor SL proximity sensor and receiver and speaker and also a bottom speaker which pairs with the receiver speaker to create a set of stereo speakers we've gotten an incredible shiny back with a 19 megapixel motion Eye camera laser autofocus and LED flash the build of this thing is absolutely gorgeous the way the metal chamfers is very eye-catching the glass elegantly sets itself between the seams of the body it's a very nice looking phone on the right we have a dedicated camera shutter button fingerprint sensor which is disabled for the US market again and volume rocker here we have a bit of a Nick but I I think this 5.5 in 4k IPS triluminous display try saying that quickly the first to support HDR content and from the demo that I saw it looked absolutely awesome when shown side by side with the Z5 premium you can definitely tell a difference in the image the HDR video here looks brighter and more Vivid with much better contrast I have always thought that the Z5 premium screen looked quite dim so this is a big step up Sony is pairing with Amazon to be able to provide 4K HDR stream content so that you can take advantage of that 4K screen now I am hearing different bits of information from different Sony reps but it seems that unlike the Z5 premium the XZ premium will give users the control to change the device between 4K 2K and 1080p resolutions as well as being able to turn on and off the HDR setting now I did not see any of these options on the demonstration phone but my assumption is that this is their intention and dream for the product and probably also why they did not want us turning on the phone and showing it spec wise the XE premium is quite dreamy it is a Snapdragon 835 device has Android nougat ip68 it's covered in Gorilla Glass 5 it's got a 4K HDR display 64 GB of internal storage 4 GB of RAM with stereo speakers but it has all these things with a worryingly small 3,23 Mah hour battery my thought is if we will really be allowed to run the UI and apps in 4k mode I don't see how the battery will be able to last Sony is heavily advertising its smart stamina mode which studies your usage and tells when to turn on the stamina mode so that the battery doesn't run out before the end of the day and the kovo Adaptive charging which focuses on battery health but even with the smart stamina mode that has these three power saving levels no one wants to stunt their performance with the stamina mode when they could have a bigger battery sorry Sony I'm not convinced by that taking a look at the motion Eye camera it is a 19 megapixel camera with larger pixels for better lowlight performance Sony claims the XE premium and the xzs have the same featur so we will use the xzs because the premium was largely inoperable there is the super slow motion mode that can capture small bursts of 960 frames per second predictive picture which detects motion and holds onto four frames before you actually hit the capture button to make sure that you get the perfect shot and steady shot with intelligent active mode for Super stable video it looks amazing the coolest feature of course is that 960 frame slow motion mode I got to see a live demo saw some prean demos and then got to try it myself the 960 frames per second mode works by recording video and whenever you feel like it you press the slow motion button after every slow motion burst it needs a few seconds before you can do it again but you can do as many slow motion shots in the same video as you want which is pretty cool and as for spec it records in 720p the one thing I noticed when trying it for myself is that executing the super slow motion mode crops the image and in less than perfect lighting it can look incredibly noisy very quickly having your subject well lit is absolutely necessary for the best
