The New Volkswagen Cooper S Line: A Hot Hatch with a Twist
The new Volkswagen Cooper S Line is one of the first hot hatches to come with hybrid power, featuring the e-Hybrid and e-Motion models. The e-Hybrid model gets a 150 horsepower 1.4 liter petrol engine which is beefed up by a 114 horsepower electric motor, producing a combined 265 horsepower. This allows for an impressive 0-60mph time of just 7 seconds. However, this powertrain also enables the car to drive for up to 37 miles on electric power alone, making it an excellent choice for city driving or running errands.
The interior of the Cooper S Line is sleek and modern, with a large 10-inch entertainment screen, digital driver's display, and minimal button clutter. The new sports steering wheel features flat bottom and copper stitching, while the air vents also boast additional copper detailing. The seats are sporty and designed to provide excellent support and comfort during long drives.
One of the standout features of the Cooper S Line is its unique styling. The car has a distinct load logo, which looks exactly the same as a standard 5-door from the front, but has a larger rear end that's reminiscent of a Kardashian-sized booty. However, the 5-door version will be available with three petrol engines: 245 horsepower, 300 horsepower, or 310 horsepower. The entry-level 245 horsepower model is expected to rival the Ford Focus ST, while the 300 horsepower model will provide a more competitive package.
In terms of performance, the Cooper S Line has an electronically limited slip differential to help prevent the front wheel from spinning away as you accelerate out of a bend. However, if you want the reassurance of four-wheel drive, then there's always the option to choose the 310 horsepower estate model, which comes with all-wheel drive as standard.
A notable feature of the Cooper S Line is its use of hybrid power. The e-Hybrid model is available in both front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive configurations, making it an excellent choice for those who want the benefits of electric power without sacrificing on performance. However, this powertrain also comes with a unique gearbox - a dual-clutch automatic that's designed to provide seamless shifting.
For fans of manual driving, the Cooper S Line offers a 7-speed manual gearbox as an option. However, it's worth noting that if you choose this transmission, you won't be able to get the car with a manual gearbox in certain configurations. On the other hand, the car will also come in a racing version called the competition, which features a 340 horsepower engine, a lightened body, and a full roll cage.
In addition to the standard Cooper S Line models, Volkswagen is also offering an all-electric touring car version of the Cooper S Line called the Cupra II Racer. This model uses a 65 kilowatt hour battery pack and four electric motors to produce a supercar-like performance. With this incredible powertrain, the Cupra II Racer can accelerate from 0-60mph in just under 4 seconds.
Finally, it's worth noting that the new Cooper S Line is likely to be priced higher than its predecessor. The entry-level e-Hybrid model will probably cost between £25,000 and £30,000, while the more powerful models - including the 310 horsepower estate - will be even pricier, with prices potentially exceeding £35,000.
