As part of my holiday season product and discussion roundups, I'm going to round up a few things that aren't products but rather more people who talk about products. This is going to be my top five favorite underrated tech channels on YouTube.
First up, we have Craft Computing's Jeff, who has been told he looks very much like me, which I find kind of amusing because I don't think so. However, he does a great job and actually just started his channel back in 2017. He hit the ground running making good content and covers it from a kind of IT professional perspective. He started out doing knockoff budget motherboards and Chinese ripoffs of products, and there's a lot of good PC hardware coverage overall. As a whole, what I'm drinking today is kind of an adult beverage spin that is lost on me because I don't drink, but his overall channel is really good. I hope to see him in 2019 hit some major milestones because his content is pretty awesome and he's improved a lot along the way over a very short amount of time.
Coming in at number two, we have Phil's Computer Lab, who is a retro tech enthusiast going much more hardcore into those things than most of us that even touch retro tech. He covers all of the different motherboards and chipsets and RAM compatibility and GPU performance as if they're new hardware that you need to benchmark and really cover deeply. What he provides is kind of like an archive of stuff that you can't really find a lot of information for these days, and it really helps a lot of us retro enthusiasts and old computer hardware enthusiasts figure out what exactly we should be looking for and things like that. This is pretty cool.
At number three, we have Bad Seed Tech's Brian, who makes some really cool product reviews. His channel is still very much growing, but he seems to have a lot more context than I do, given his size of around 25k subs at the moment. He needs a lot more and I want to see a lot of people go to him, but he's doing really good work. He does some really awesome product shots, and he puts in the time to make sure that his b-roll is just kind of killer. The videos are entertaining, and he covers the products from a kind of real user perspective, not just giving you five hundred things this week and saying "here's what I think about it." This approach has been praised for being more relatable.
Number four on my list is Armando Ferreira, who does some really good work. He even has a Tested Tuesday series where he covers production gear from a kind of technical standpoint with regards to how useful it is for your own workflow or different ways that you could use it. He covers cameras and sensor differences, things like that, but also covers other kinds of gear like motorized sliders and little things that can be added to your camera. One example he found was one of the first dual-SI fast-to-SSD adapters for a C200. What's great about Armando is that he covers a lot of technical aspects of production gear that a lot of production channels don't cover, and this is something I appreciate a lot.
Finally, at number five on my list is Gerald Unruh, who goes even deeper into the technical side of things than most people do. He covers the differences in debayering methods, true color science of raw images from camera sensors, and different aspects of camera lenses and lighting. This is really deep stuff that a lot of people don't think about but should. Gerald is actually working on a video soon on 30fps versus 24fps for YouTube, which has been something I've kind of shared some unappreciated hot takes about on Twitter.
