DIY Spoon Painting - Easy Home Decorating with Mr. Kate

The Art of Unconventional Painting: A Conversation with Mr. Kate

As we begin our conversation with Mr. Kate, it becomes clear that she is an artist with a unique approach to her craft. "Oh my God, there's a bug!" she exclaims, holding up a small insect that has somehow found its way into her workspace. She laughs and continues, "I painted it mustard. Follow the gem." It seems that Mr. Kate has a playful and spontaneous personality, one that is reflected in her artistic process.

As we move on to discuss her latest project, a custom art piece for a client's beige-colored room, Mr. Kate becomes excited about the opportunity to bring color and texture into the space. "It's basically beige on beige on brown," she notes, "but we can definitely do something different." She explains that she will be using acrylic paint, which she finds to be easy to work with and quick-drying. This choice allows her to create a unique and dynamic piece of art without needing specialized training or equipment.

One of the most striking aspects of Mr. Kate's artistic approach is her use of unconventional tools. Instead of a traditional paintbrush, she uses a spoon to apply paint to her canvas. "You don't need a paintbrush," she says, "you just need a spoon, some water, and paper towels." This unorthodox method allows her to create interesting textures and patterns that add depth and visual interest to her art.

As Mr. Kate begins to work on her piece, it becomes clear that she is thinking carefully about the color palette and composition of her artwork. She explains that she wants to "bring in some other colors" to add contrast and interest to the space. Her approach is intuitive and spontaneous, but also thoughtful and deliberate. "You need to plan the order that you want the paint," she advises, emphasizing the importance of creating a cohesive and visually appealing piece.

As Mr. Kate works on her art, she shares with us her process and techniques. She explains that she is using a 36-inch by 36-inch heavy-duty canvas, which provides a large surface area for her to work on. With big tubes of paint, she is able to create the artistic texture she desires using the back of the spoon. "I'm just using the back of the spoon to kind of create this rippling almost snake skin like texture," she says, demonstrating her technique.

As Mr. Kate finishes her piece and steps back to admire it, we can see that she has created something truly unique and beautiful. The stripes are vibrant and dynamic, with a textured quality that adds depth and interest to the artwork. She explains that once the paint is dry, she can add additional colors or patterns to enhance the piece further.

Finally, Mr. Kate reveals her finished art piece and shares her thoughts on how it will be displayed in the client's room. "This is Off the Wall," she says with a smile, admiring her handiwork. She explains that she wants to create a space that is both playful and elegant, using color and texture to bring energy and excitement into the room. With her unorthodox methods and artistic vision, Mr. Kate has created a truly one-of-a-kind piece of art that will undoubtedly be a focal point in the client's home.
