The Art of Transforming a T-Shirt into a Skunk Hoodie: A Step-by-Step Guide
Once your hood has been finished, it's time to put it on. Yes, you read that right! It's time to pin it onto your shirt. I like to start with the center back in the very back of the shirt. Pin it so that the edge of the hood and the edge of the shirt overlap. This will help you get a better idea of how the finished product will look.
Pinning the Hood
-----------------
Start by pinning the white head stripe on the hood. It's useful to have a head to borrow, so you can see exactly how this is going to turn out. Place the pointy part of the stripe almost exactly at the front of your hood and pin it down, trying to line up the white stripe with the seam in the hood. Continue pinning, making sure not to pin your own head in the process! Once you've got your head stripe pinned, it's time to move on to the back stripes.
Pinning the Back Stripes
-----------------------
One side of the stripe should be slightly narrower than the other. This is going to go at the top, and you'll pin it so that the top of your stripe is slightly hidden by the top of the hood. The hood stripe should be a little bit longer, so that when you sew it, it blends more easily with the rest of the hoodie. The stripes should barely meet at the bottom of your hood or at the bottom of your sweatshirt.
Moving on to the Tail
--------------------
Now that you've got your back stripes pinned and your hood stripes pinned, it's time to move on to the tail. Line up the top of the white piece with the top of the black tail. When everything is all pinned, it's time to get sewing again! I'll be using the T-shirt Stitch for this part.
Sewing the Tail
-----------------
Sew down the sides to sew the white stripe to the black tail. Once the white stripe has been sewn onto your black tail, you can either hem the edges or use an overlocker/serger to surge along the edges. Now that your tail has been finished, it's time to start sewing on the stripes to the rest of your hoodie.
Sewing the Stripes
------------------
Start sewing at the hood, starting where the hood meets the rest of the T-shirt. Once you've sewn the stripe onto your hood, it's time to work on the back stripes. The next bit is a little bit tricky – pin the Stripe from the hood so that a little bit of it overlaps and crosses with the Stripe from this side. This will form a line with the Stripe from the other side.
Sewing the Back Stripes
----------------------
Start where you left off and sew, making sure to sew a little bit of the Stripe from the hood onto the Stripe from the side or on the back. You should now have your hood striped attached and your back stripes attached – there should be a little flap here that we'll deal with later.
Attaching the Tail Fold
----------------------
It's time to attach your tail fold. Fold it over here, and stitch simple as that! Now that you've got your ears attached, let's move on to making them.
Making the Skunk Ears
---------------------
You're going to want to draw a triangle with this triangle – cut two white fabric and two black fabric for the black fabric. You can use any of the leftover second T-shirt or one of the sleeves from the first T-shirt. Cut out two note card triangles, two black triangles, and two white triangles. Pin the black triangle to the white triangle and sew down two sides.
Adding a Little Flap
-------------------
Once you finish that, stick one of your note card triangles inside your ear triangles to make it stay up! Now you have two little ears – time to attach them to your hood!
Attaching the Skunk Ears
-------------------------
Decide where on the hood you want your ears to go. I found that the best place is right next to the white stripe and about 4 inches from the edge. Take a pin and pin down the white side, forwards and on the back side, so that you have reinforcement on both sides.
Sewing the Ears
-----------------
Once your ears have been pinned, sew down both the front and the back with a zigzag Stitch. And that's almost done! For the final touch, you'll need to sew down any stray threads or flappy bits.
Finishing Touches
-----------------
You're officially done now – you've got your skunk hoodie stripes and everything! You can wear it out and show off your new creation – thank you for watching my tutorial, I hope you enjoyed it, and see you again soon!
