### **1. "Anna Dressed in Blood" by Kendare Blake**
The first two books in my haul are by the talented Kendare Blake, an author whose work I absolutely adore—especially her *Three Dark Crowns* series. These two books are the starting points of her other series, and I couldn’t resist picking them up for just $3 each.
The first book is *Anna Dressed in Blood*. I’ve had my eye on this one for a while, but I was hesitant because it has horror elements—I’m not exactly great with scary things. However, Kendare Blake’s writing is so dark and delicious that I knew I had to give it a try.
The story follows Cass, a ghost hunter who tracks and kills ghosts, just like his father before him. He travels the country with his spirit-sniffing cat, intrigued by the supernatural. One day, he stumbles upon a ghost in a Victorian mansion. This ghost, named Anna, has killed every single person who entered her home since 1958, and she’s still wearing the dress from her brutal murder. Cass is drawn to this mysterious and layered ghost, and the synopsis hints at a *boy-meets-girl* story. Will they fall in love, or will Anna try to kill him? I’m hooked and can’t wait to find out.

### **2. "The Goddess War" by Kendare Blake**
The second Kendare Blake book I picked up is *The Goddess War*. This one has an intriguing premise: gods are never supposed to die, but now they’re succumbing to a mysterious illness that causes them to sprout feathers and die horrific deaths. Athena, the goddess of war and strategy, realizes she must act quickly to save herself and the other gods.
Athena stumbles upon our main character, Cassandra, who has no knowledge of the divine world. However, it turns out Cassandra holds a key role in this unfolding god war. Two groups of gods are at odds—one trying to find a cure for their sickness, and the other killing others to prolong their own lives. The synopsis ends with the line, “The goddess war has begun,” leaving me intrigued by the idea of warring gods and humans caught in the middle.

### **3. "The Unexpected Everything" by Morgan Matson**
Next up is *The Unexpected Everything* by Morgan Matson. I love her writing—her book *Since You’ve Been Gone* was a lot of fun, and this one sounds equally delightful. The cover alone with its adorable pug made me do a double-take, but it’s not just the cover that caught my attention.
Andy is a girl who has everything planned out: an important internship, amazing friends, and a summer full of adventures. But when her dad’s political scandal unravels her life, she ends up walking dogs for a living—and it looks like there might be some cute romance involved. Morgan Matson is exceptional at writing charming, summer-based romances, and I’m desperate for some sunshine in my life, even if it’s fictional.

### **4. "Boundless" by Kenneth Oppel**
The next two books are by Kenneth Oppel, an author whose work I’ve been eager to explore. His recent book covers have such a retro, illustrated style that I love, and these paperbacks coordinate beautifully.
The first one is *Boundless*, a middle-grade story about Will, who has always wanted adventure. When he steps onto the train called the Boundless, his life takes a dark and mysterious turn. A murder occurs on board, and Will finds himself holding the key to solving it. As the train hurtles across the country, he’s surrounded by dark creatures inside and out, forced to contend with wild characters along the way. This sounds like a whimsical murder mystery with a retro feel—it’s giving me *middle-grade Agatha Christie* vibes, which is so exciting!

### **5. "Sky Breaker" by Kenneth Oppel**
The second Kenneth Oppel book I picked up is *Sky Breaker*, the sequel to his famous novel *Airborne*. I was drawn to these covers because they’re so retro and unique. The first book in the series, *Airborne*, is set in an alternate history where airplanes were never invented, and airships dominate transportation.
The story follows a cabin boy on a luxurious airship filled with mechanical wonders and fictional creatures that live in the sky. It’s reminiscent of my favorite book growing up, *Leviathan* by Scott Westerfeld, which was another alternate history involving airships. The first novel in this series sounds incredible, and I plan to get it soon.

### **6. "Rose Under Fire" by Elizabeth Wein**
The last book I picked up is *Rose Under Fire* by Elizabeth Wein, the sequel to her critically acclaimed *Code Name Verity*. I already own *Code Name Verity*, one of my favorite historical fiction novels about women involved in World War II. The first book follows a spy who is captured and tortured, while *Rose Under Fire* tells the story of Rose, a fighter pilot who is also captured and sent to a concentration camp.
In the camp, Rose meets incredible women involved in the war in various ways. Elizabeth Wein’s writing is both beautiful and tragic as she captures the strength of women during one of history’s darkest times. I’ve been meaning to read this book for ages, and now that I have it in a matching paperback set with *Code Name Verity*, I can’t wait to dive into it.
