Sony Xperia Z5 Premium First Look!

# First Look: Sony Xperia Z5 Premium - A 4K Smartphone Breakthrough

## Introduction

The wait is over! The first smartphone with a 4K display has arrived, and it’s none other than the **Sony Xperia Z5 Premium**. In this article, we’ll give you an in-depth look at this groundbreaking device, covering its design, features, performance, and more. Whether you’re a tech enthusiast or just curious about the latest advancements in mobile technology, this is one phone you won’t want to miss.

## Design: A Familiar Yet Premium Feel

The **Sony Xperia Z5 Premium** carries forward the iconic design language that Sony has been perfecting for years. It features a clean, rectangular slab with a metal frame and glass front and back, giving it a sleek and modern appearance. Like many other Sony devices, it’s completely waterproof, making it a sturdy companion for everyday use.

One of the most noticeable differences with this device is its size. At 5.5 inches, it’s larger than previous Sony models and comparable in dimensions to the **Galaxy Note 5**, though slightly taller and thicker. Despite its size, it feels great in the hand, with the metal and glass construction offering a premium texture. However, like many phones with a glass back, it tends to attract fingerprints—something to keep in mind if you’re particular about keeping your device pristine.

## Display: The Star of the Show

The **Xperia Z5 Premium** boasts a 5.5-inch display with an **86 PPI (pixels per inch)** resolution, making it the first smartphone in the world to feature a 4K screen. This level of pixel density is nothing short of extraordinary, delivering an extremely sharp and crisp viewing experience. The colors are vibrant, the saturation is rich, and the viewing angles are excellent—truly a joy to look at.

While we weren’t able to test it in direct sunlight, one observation we had was that the screen doesn’t get as bright as competing devices like the **Galaxy Note 5** or the **Galaxy S6**, which could make it a bit challenging to view outdoors. That said, the display is still nothing short of impressive, and you’d have to see it in person to fully appreciate its quality.

As for whether you can notice the difference between a 4K screen and a Quad HD screen, that’s debatable. Regardless, there’s no denying that this is an outstanding display—so sharp, so clear, it feels like stepping into a new era of mobile technology.

## Hardware and Features: Under the Hood

Powering the **Xperia Z5 Premium** is the **Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor**, paired with 3GB of RAM. From our brief hands-on experience, the phone felt fast, snappy, and fluid, with no noticeable lag or stutter. For everyday tasks like browsing, gaming, or multitasking, it should have no trouble keeping up with the competition.

In terms of storage, the device comes with **32GB of internal memory**, but if you find that insufficient, there’s a microSD card slot to expand your storage. Another standout feature is the fingerprint scanner embedded in the power button—a clever placement that makes sense since your thumb naturally rests there when powering on the phone. It works exceptionally well and unlocks the device with impressive speed.

The **Z5 Premium** also comes loaded with the usual connectivity features, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and NFC. Given its high-end specs and 4K display, it’s no surprise that many are curious about its battery life. Sony claims the phone can last up to two days on a single charge, but we’ll have to wait for our full review to confirm these claims.

## Camera: High Hopes for Photography

Sony has long been known for its expertise in camera technology, and the **Xperia Z5 Premium** continues that legacy with a **23-megapixel Exmor RS sensor** and a super-fast autofocus system. The phone also features a **23mm wide-angle f/2.0 G lens**, which should deliver excellent results in various lighting conditions.

For selfies, the front-facing camera packs a 5-megapixel shooter, which is adequate but not particularly groundbreaking. While we haven’t had the chance to test it ourselves yet, we’re confident that Sony’s engineering prowess will shine through in both the rear and front cameras.

---

## Software: A Clean and Personalized Experience

The **Xperia Z5 Premium** runs on **Android 5.1.1**, paired with Sony’s signature **Xperia UI**. If you’ve used previous Xperia devices, this interface should feel familiar. It’s a clean, almost stock Android experience with a few Sony-specific customizations thrown in, such as small apps for easier multitasking and built-in PlayStation integration—perfect for gamers.

Overall, the software feels lightweight and unobtrusive, catering to those who appreciate a close-to-stock Android experience while still offering some convenient extras.

---

## Conclusion: Setting the Standard

The **Sony Xperia Z5 Premium** is undeniably a bold move in the smartphone world, setting new standards with its 4K display and premium design. While it’s sure to face tough competition from established players like Samsung and Apple, there’s no doubt that Sony has equipped this phone with all the right tools to give it a fighting chance.

Pricing and availability details are still pending, but one thing is for certain: you’ll have to pay a premium for this cutting-edge device. Whether you’re a tech-savvy enthusiast or someone who just loves great design and top-tier performance, the **Xperia Z5 Premium** is definitely worth keeping an eye on.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwhat's up guys lawn here from Android authority and it was bound to happen eventually but we finally have our first 4K smartphone this is your first look and handson of the Sony Xperia Z5 premium so starting with the design the Sony Xperia Z5 premium looks and feels a lot like many other Sony devices in the past it has the same iconic design uh with a clean rectangular slab and it's mostly made of metal and glass so you have a metal frame around the sides and then you have glass on the front and back uh like many other Sony phones as well it's also completely waterproof so the biggest difference with this device is that you'll notice that it's a lot larger than usual at least for uh Sony standards it's a 5.5 in smartphone and it's actually similar in size to the Galaxy Note 5 but it's a little bit taller and just a little bit thicker but it does feel really good in the hand the metal and glass does feel really nice but like many other phones that have a glass back it does tend to be a little bit of a fingerprint magnet now the star of the show is obviously the display so it's a 5.5 in screen with 4K resolution uh making the Xperia Z5 premium the first phone in the world with a 4K display and that puts out a whopping 86 PPI which is totally insane and with this pixel density and with this resolution it's it's an extremely sharp and crisp looking display uh it's also very vibrant very saturated has great viewing angles uh the only thing I noticed was that it doesn't get all that bright especially com in comparison to something like the Note 5 or the Galaxy S6 uh it doesn't get quite as bright so it's a little bit difficult to see Outdoors uh but otherwise it's a fantastic looking screen and it's something you really have to see for yourself in order to really appreciate uh but to be honest uh I'm not really entirely sure if I can really see the difference between a 4K screen and a Quad HD screen uh but regardless it is a fantastic looking display no matter how you look at it the remaining parts of the Z5 premium are pretty similar to the regular Z5 so inside you're looking at a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor paired with 3 GB of RAM uh so performance shouldn't really be an issue at all uh and in my little short time with the Z5 premium it seemed very fast and snappy and fluid I didn't notice any sort of lag or stutters or anything like that so it should be fast enough to keep up with the rest of the competition for storage on the Z5 premium you're looking at 32 GB of internal storage but if that is not enough for you there is a Micro SD card slot uh to give you extra storage and there's also a fingerprint scanner that is embedded in the power button that is basically another differentiator with the Z5 here and this is very different from all the other fingerprint scanners that we've seen which normally have them mounted in the home button or on the backside but having it on the side where the power button is definitely makes a lot of sense because that's where your thumb normally rests to power on the phone so it makes a lot of sense to have it here and it's actually really convenient and it works extremely well uh it's actually very fast at unlocking the device and setting it up is pretty simple as well you basically just sort of uh keep on tapping on the button until it registers your fingerprint very similar to other implementations that we've seen on other devices of course with the rest of the hardware it comes with the usual stuff that you might expect like Wi-Fi bluo GPS and just in case you are wondering it does ship with NFC on board now with these power hungry specs and the insane 4K screen a lot of people are expecting that the Z5 premium is probably going to take a pretty big hit in the battery life Department uh but obviously we can't really say too much about it right now but the handset does have a 3430 mAh battery inside and that should hopefully do the trick and Sony actually swears that the phone will provide 2 days worth of battery life on a single charge uh but we're definitely going to have to wait and see if those claims are actually true now although we haven't had a chance to test out the camera on the Z5 premium we do have pretty high hopes for it just due to the fact that Sony has a pretty good track record when it comes to cameras and of course this one happens to be a 23 megapixel xmore RS sensor with a super fast autofocus uh some say glass is more important and this camera is well equipped with a 23 mm wide angle f2.0 G lens and if you like selfies that 5 megapix front-facing shooter should be good enough likely not amazing but honestly what front-facing camera is as far as the software goes you're looking at Android 5.1.1 with Sony's Xperia UI on top and the Xperia UI will feel very familiar to you if you've used it before in the past and it's a very close to stock Android experience uh with just a few Sony customizations put on top like the small apps for easier multitasking and the built-in PlayStation integration which is great if you are a gamer but otherwise it's a very clean experience and you'll definitely enjoy it if you enjoy that close to stock experience with a few extra bells and whistles so there you have it guys the Sony xeria Z5 premium is posed to go against the big guys literally and it does seem to have all the right weapons for a good battle exact us pricing and availability is still up in the air but do expect to pay a premium price as always thank you
