How to become an Advanced Motorist - Is it worth doing !

**The Art of Advanced Motorists: A System of Car Control**

When it comes to driving, most people think that just getting from point A to point B is enough. However, for those who want to take their driving skills to the next level, there's a whole lot more to it than that. In this article, we'll explore the system of car control used by advanced motorists, and how it can improve your own driving skills.

**The Information Phase**

One of the most critical aspects of advanced motorists is the information phase. This involves paying close attention to the surroundings while driving, including the position of other cars on the road, pedestrians, road conditions, and any hazards or obstacles that may be present. It's all about being aware of everything around you, from a safe distance, in order to make informed decisions behind the wheel. "Don't break the speed limit," says our expert driver. "The speed limit is still there, even if you're doing an advanced motion test. If this road is a 60 limit, I should be doing as close to 60 as I can."

**Positioning the Car Correctly**

Another key aspect of advanced motorists is positioning the car correctly. This involves getting into the right gear at the right time, and adjusting speed and braking accordingly. It's all about making good progress down the road, while also being mindful of the car in front and any hazards that may be present. "You have to make sure you're clipping along at a safe speed," says our expert driver. "If I'm driving on a 60 limit, I should be doing as close to 60 as I can."

**The Foot Brake**

One of the most challenging aspects of advanced motorists is mastering the foot brake. This involves using gentle, gradual braking to slow down and come to a stop, rather than relying on the brakes too hard. It's all about feeling the weight of the car and anticipating when it's safe to slow down. "It does take a bit of getting used to," says our expert driver. "But once you get the hang of it, it's a game-changer."

**Heel and Toe**

Many advanced motorists use heel-and-toe gear shifting to improve their acceleration and braking skills. This involves blipping the throttle with the clutch pedal to downshift before braking, and then accelerating smoothly into the next gear. "It's all about feeling the car and anticipating when it's safe to accelerate or brake," says our expert driver.

**Acceleration**

Finally, there's the art of acceleration. Advanced motorists know that acceleration is key to making good progress on the road. However, they also know that too much speed can be a recipe for disaster. So how do you strike the right balance? Our expert driver advises: "When approaching a reasonably tight bend, I just come off the throttle slightly and adjust my speed accordingly." This involves using gentle acceleration to get into the corner, rather than pushing it too hard.

**The Final Phase: Braking**

Once you're in the turn, you need to know how to brake safely and effectively. Advanced motorists use a combination of braking and acceleration to control their speed and make good progress down the road. "You have to adjust your speed accordingly," says our expert driver. "If it's too windy or slippery, you may need to slow down even further."

**The Test**

So how do you become an advanced motorist? The first step is to enroll in a course through the Institute of Advanced Motorists. These courses are designed to teach you the skills and techniques necessary for advanced driving, including the system of car control described above. The course includes observed drives with experienced instructors, as well as video tutorials and briefing sessions.

**Benefits**

Becoming an advanced motorist has numerous benefits, from improved driving skills to reduced insurance premiums. By mastering the system of car control, you'll become a more confident and capable driver, able to handle even the toughest road conditions. And with the ability to reduce your speed limit and make good progress down the road, you'll be driving like a pro in no time.

**Reduced Insurance Premiums**

One of the most significant benefits of becoming an advanced motorist is the potential for reduced insurance premiums. Many insurance companies offer discounts to drivers who complete an advanced driver course or hold membership in the Institute of Advanced Motorists. By completing your training and becoming a member, you may be able to reduce your insurance premiums by as much as half.

**Conclusion**

In conclusion, the system of car control used by advanced motorists is all about paying attention to the surroundings, positioning the car correctly, and mastering the foot brake, heel-and-toe gear shifting, acceleration, and braking. By following these techniques and completing an advanced driver course, you'll become a more confident and capable driver, able to handle even the toughest road conditions.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enI can't keep you out of videos at the moment can I go and play you just ruined the take you ruined the take hey guys and welcome to petrol ped now for the observant amongst you you may have seen in videos that feature Ruby roadster this badge on the windscreen now that badge is my Institute of Advanced motorists membership badge and a couple of weeks ago in one of my midweek 180s I asked the question whether any of you were also members of the Institute of Advanced motorists or other advanced motoring organizations and if not were you interested in doing your advanced test or understanding more about advanced motoring and there was quite a lot of people came back said actually we'd like to know more and that's what this video is all about I thought we'd have a bit of a chat about advanced motoring and the kind of approach to the I am take and other advanced motoring organizations so before we get going then let's put some context around this I mean I like many of you I suspect have been obsessed with cars and driving since about this high I used to sit in the passenger seat when my dad was driving and he'd let me change gear and I look at where his feet were on the pedals and I just could not wait to get behind the wheel of a car I had a driving lesson on the day of my 17th birthday I might pass my test first time about three months later and really you know you think oh I can drive now but the day you pass your driving test is the day you begin to learn to drive in my view and it is amazing and this is a UK specific video I appreciate but here in the UK you pass your driving test at 17 you don't have to do anything or pass any kind of other formal qualification I think until you get to about 70 then you have to write off and ask for your driving license to be extended and I don't even think I think you need a medical at 75 it's it's ridiculous really there's no extra training at all unless you do it yourself under your own under your own steam as it were now I then once I'd learned to drive the when I went to university I can remember taking a test to be able to drive the minibus I had a horse for a while so we had a trailer so I learned how to drive with a trailer and then onto a seven and a half tonne lorry and I've always loved that challenge of driving different vehicles so I eventually got to the point where I really wanted to challenge myself and take my driving to the next level a maxi that was quite a long time after I passed my test some sort of 20 years after I passed my test and I decided to do the advanced driving test now and I'm gonna talk specifically about the Institute the Institute of Advanced motorists who in the UK there are other organizations in the UK I think Ross Purdue an advanced motoring program and I'm sure in your various countries for my foreign subscribers I'm sure there are similar organizations where you guys live - and I'm sure they all follow a very similar principle so this is a UK specific ones that so apologies for that but the thing that surprised me and and actually put me off for a while I assumed it would be quite expensive like getting your first licensed driving lessons and so on are very expensive and actually it's not nearly as expensive as you think so let's have a bit of a chat around the process you're gonna get involved as well mate I can't keep you out of videos at the moment can I go and play you just ruined the take you ruined the take oh my goodness me anyway let's have a chat about the Institute of Advanced motorists and how just to think about their the approach that they take the process you need to go through and maybe most importantly the benefits of having your I am membership so the I am Ashley follow the system of car control that is set out in the police Road craft manual and that's another reason why I was really intrigued to do the test because basically you follow very similar driving guidelines and principles to the advanced police motorists who in my opinion are some of the best drivers on the road and and and that system of car control is best explained when we're out and about driving and I just happen to pick the hottest day of the year so far to do this film it's beautiful beautiful weather so roof down let's take the car up the road and talk through the system of car control and an acronym that as an advanced motorist you go to bed and dream about and that is its go information position speed gear acceleration that's basically the acronym you live by okay so out on the road now the first thing I need to add to this video is this is not a complete guide to how to pass your advanced motoring test and I am sure that there will be advance notice out there that will pick Fault in the things I'm allowed to say the idea for me is to give you a flavor of the kind of things the rationale approach behind advanced motoring the very first thing now remember when you did your driving test now for some of you by that that might be quite recently some of you might be a few years ago remember the little book you had to remember called the highway code well with advanced motoring the first thing you need to do is gather out and read it again because everything that you have an Iowa code and everything that you do in your first test is relevant for advanced motoring and that includes things like feed in the steering wheel through your hands which is the bad habit most people get into straightaway when they start crossing their hands over and stuff so it's always tempted to position on the steering wheel feed the wheel three and all the things that probably annoyed you when you did your first driving test become really important but a really good thing for me is that when I did my advanced motoring test and all the learning before it is I understood why those things were important and that means that I now basically do that all the time so let's talk more about this system of car control and we will start off with the first phase but actually it's a face that runs through all the others and that is information and for me maybe the most important thing the thing I learn and remember the most about doing all of my observe drives and so on is information being observant and that's not just looking at what's in front of you or looking in your mirrors every now and again it's everything it's looking at the road ahead it's seeing if you can spot coming hazards it's looking at the white lines on the road now for example the white lines on the road tell us a lot more the moment I've got double white lines which I know most of us should know go cross a white line I remember my police instructor when I did my test gave me a lovely mantra to remember the more white the more shite and that's a really good one but even the length of the white lines on the road can indicate whether there are hazards approaching or not so does he come along this road single carriageway I've got long white lines that's just a warning to Said's I know although I could go into the opposite carriageway if I wanted to I should just be a bit more cautious of that as we come around this corner again the visibility ahead isn't great I've got a I've got a bend there but notice as we come around this corner the road opens up I've got good visibility ahead look at the size of the white lines in the middle of the road now they're much much shorter and that's an indicator to me to say that the hazard of going into the opposite carriageway is a little bit reduced as we come up to this crest look look at the white lines now they've got longer that means it's a little bit more caution needed again a little bit more observation I come over the crest and they're gonna stay long because I've got a right hand Bend coming up and I just need to be aware that that's a little bit of danger so when you are in that kind of information face taking in everything around you and just something as simple as the lines on the road can really help your your safety and your awareness of what's happening just to give you an example by the way of how information is your I remember when I did my test and my examiner used to say what was the last roadside we wrote we drove past or tell me about this road and we were going down a small B Road and he said tell me about this road and the hazards that you might come across I was really struggling miss it right let me help you out we've just driven past a bus shelter Mami's this road is on a bus route and you may will come round a corner and find a bus coming the other way taking up some of the road and also about five hundred yards back we went past some fresh horse poo on the road which means that there are potentially horses around and just to take of hit more caution that's the kind of observation that that information face and there you should be thinking about all the time so what's the next part of our acronym obscure was information the notorious position so P stands for position to position on the road of your car now you might argue on a single character I wrote like this it's obvious where your car needs to be but actually as you're going into a left-hand Bend you could just maybe bring your car out slightly to the middle of the road so you could have a look round and see if you can get a better view round the corner likewise if you're going round a right hand then maybe you could bring your car to the left of the road certainly when you're coming up to things like roundabouts and multi-lane roads which later you in are you in the right lane for where you want to go and just make sure that the car is positioned correctly so information position that leads us on to speed and gear and that's the conversation are most interested in having because that's actually what triggered me to do this video in the first place slightly different camera angle I appreciate the speed well the obvious thing to state speed is about having the right speed to go into an obstacle and then advanced boating an obstacle can be anything from a corner around about another car another road user a pedestrian a biker horse anything that you have to negotiate or drive around and this is the Challenger half because when are you know there's a fast driver and a motor circuit driver I like going on track days and so on for me in the braking phase I use my engine to help me with my braking I do a lot of engine braking and I actually do a lot of heel and towing but in the system of car control elem towing isn't banned but it's it's frowned upon the brake is to slow the car down so for example I am currently in fourth gear I have a corner coming up I'm looking at that corner think you are need to take a bit of speed off I do my braking phase with the foot brake then I come off the brake I engage the gear I need which will be third in this case and then I accelerate around the corner so you basically do all of your braking first and then change gear and try and avoid this brake gear overlap and there's lots of arguments for that the main argument I was given is the brake pads are a lot cheaper than an engine so if your engine braking then you're putting access it where in your car my talent do that is I actually enjoy the process of engine braking and the really difficult thing is if I'm coming up to this t-junction here I'm on the brake now I'm adjusting my speed I'm not going to change gear at all I'm going to turn a right here I'm not gonna change my but I'm gonna have to now go into a lower gear because I'm just about to stall but I'm basically gonna drive all the way to the end and then drop the clutch very slowly I'm still in 3rd gear and I'm now going to move to the gear I need which is first to pull away and I'm now gonna pull away because it's safe and that's the bit that most people when they do their advanced driving really struggle with is this completely different style of braking is another one that I've got a right hand been coming or that I've been coming up I'm gonna do my braking braking I'm in fifth year this is the third year I'm actually gonna block change into third into the correct gear and then accelerate out of the corner and that takes some getting used to believe me there's no ng braking in that at all so we take an example of coming up to a junction with this driving system put a t-junction coming up currently in fourth gear information phase of cachoeira I mean nothing behind me I'm going to be turning right here we do my braking on the foot brake I'm not going to touch the gear I'm currently in fourth gear breaking breaking breaking and as I come up to the line I'm just going to depress the clutch just before the car stalls come to a stop and then I can put my car in first gear and that's the gear I need to pull in and that me took ages to get hold of the information phase happens all the time positioning the car correctly we then adjust the speed using the foot brake we put it into the right gear for the hazard then the final phase to look at is acceleration so we approaching a reasonably tight bend in the moment I'm just going to come off the throttle adjust my speed slightly and then accelerate out at the corner coming up to this Bend it's going to come off the throttle slightly onto the brakes adjust my speed third gear corner into third and then accelerate out through the corner and then I accelerate up and make good progress is the turn that you will hear now as an advanced motorist when you do your test first golden rule is don't break the speed limit speed limit is still there two figures you're doing in advanced motion test doesn't mean you can suddenly go and start breaking the speed limit but if this road is a 60 limit then I should be doing as close to 60 as I can I should make good progress that speed limit shouldn't be a target to try and hate that but it's a safe speed to do so I should be or should be clipping along here at about 60 miles per hour which I am it's probably a bit windy up here but with a view like that I had to come up here anyway so that is the system of car control or at least just as flavor of its some of the things that I take away in and so on so what happens next how do you get involved well through the Institute of Advanced motorists it's really straightforward I will put the links in the description below they do an advanced driver course is a hundred and forty nine pounds that includes all of your training and your tests and your first year's membership of the I am which I think's an absolute bargain it's all run by volunteers so basically when you when you apply all or book you're your course you'll be lined up with your local group and mine used to meet on the first Sunday of every month and you'll go along there and you'll you'll be given a briefing and watch some videos and some tutor egde and then you'll go out on observe drives my first observed drive was with an advanced driver driving and I was just watching and they were demonstrating the system of car control and then then you go out with you driving and an observer and you slowly but surely learn the techniques and it does take a bit of getting used to especially that that braking and gear and it's just so counterintuitive to how many of us drive and also you'll find you have a lot of habits as well and then eventually you get put in for your test your test is with a police class one advanced driver it mine was two hours long it was one of the most fascinating and enjoyable things I've ever done behind the wheel of a car it really was insightful but you need to make sure that you do all your training first and then that's it you're an advanced motorist benefits well if you search around you are likely to get a reduction on your car insurance one of the triggers for me was I'd bought an s2000 and my insurance renewal was just ridiculous and through doing my advanced motoring I pretty much half my insurance premium in the first year the I am have their own insurance broker that you can go through but if you go to many of the others and say you're in the I am member sometimes you'll get a reduction and that's it it's a really straightforward thing to do I'd love to know what you think of this video I would say but the quirky that I adhere to many of the things I learned when I did my Advanced motorists certainly the information phase is critical you learn so much about the surroundings when you're driving the car and you know I don't do so much of the braking and and speed reduction thing and I like to heel and toe I take what I've learned on the track when I did my national bee race license and I use that on the on the road a lot but but the information the position of the car making good progress all of those are things that I I do on a daily basis and it certainly improved my driving and it improved my observation of other people's driving so anyway I hope you've enjoyed that if you have done so give me a thumbs up comments below were always welcome if you haven't done so already please subscribe to pet repent for plenty more content to come I know this was a little bit different but you know it came triggered out the back of a midweek 180 I hope you've enjoyed it but then I'll see you guys on the next video anyway drive safeI can't keep you out of videos at the moment can I go and play you just ruined the take you ruined the take hey guys and welcome to petrol ped now for the observant amongst you you may have seen in videos that feature Ruby roadster this badge on the windscreen now that badge is my Institute of Advanced motorists membership badge and a couple of weeks ago in one motorists it's really straightforward I will put the links in the description below they do an advanced driver course is a hundred and forty nine pounds that includes all of your training and your tests and your first year's membership of the I am which I think's an absolute bargain it's all run by volunteers so basically when you when you apply all or book you're your course you'll be lined up with your local group and mine used to meet on the first Sunday of every month and you'll go along there and you'll you'll be given a briefing and watch some videos and some tutor egde and then you'll go out on observe drives my first observed drive was with an advanced driver driving and I was just watching and they were demonstrating the system of car control and then then you go out with you driving and an observer and you slowly but surely learn the techniques and it does take a bit of getting used to especially that that braking and gear and it's just so counterintuitive to how many of us drive and also you'll find you have a lot of habits as well and then eventually you get put in for your test your test is with a police class one advanced driver it mine was two hours long it was one of the most fascinating and enjoyable things I've ever done behind the wheel of a car it really was insightful but you need to make sure that you do all your training first and then that's it you're an advanced motorist benefits well if you search around you are likely to get a reduction on your car insurance one of the triggers for me was I'd bought an s2000 and my insurance renewal was just ridiculous and through doing my advanced motoring I pretty much half my insurance premium in the first year the I am have their own insurance broker that you can go through but if you go to many of the others and say you're in the I am member sometimes you'll get a reduction and that's it it's a really straightforward thing to do I'd love to know what you think of this video I would say but the quirky that I adhere to many of the things I learned when I did my Advanced motorists certainly the information phase is critical you learn so much about the surroundings when you're driving the car and you know I don't do so much of the braking and and speed reduction thing and I like to heel and toe I take what I've learned on the track when I did my national bee race license and I use that on the on the road a lot but but the information the position of the car making good progress all of those are things that I I do on a daily basis and it certainly improved my driving and it improved my observation of other people's driving so anyway I hope you've enjoyed that if you have done so give me a thumbs up comments below were always welcome if you haven't done so already please subscribe to pet repent for plenty more content to come I know this was a little bit different but you know it came triggered out the back of a midweek 180 I hope you've enjoyed it but then I'll see you guys on the next video anyway drive safe\n"
