**Studio J: A Stained Glass Studio with a 45-Year History**
Welcome to Studio J, a fascinating place where art and craftsmanship come together. This stained glass studio has been in business for an impressive 45 years, founded by Kevin's husband and himself. Their children also work at the studio, but the talented craftsmen who create the stained glass pieces are not their offspring, but rather experienced artisans who have worked with the studio for nearly three decades.
**Designing a Stained Glass Masterpiece**
The design process at Studio J is a collaborative effort between the client and the studio's designers. In this case, Asha, a client, had brought her own design to share with Kevin and his team. The studio's designers were impressed with the design and worked closely with Asha to bring it to life in glass.
"Kevin had to show her how it could really be rendered in glass," explained Judy, "because large pieces like hers can't be done without concern for breakage right." To ensure a successful outcome, Kevin shared his expertise on the type of glass that would best suit Asha's design. The studio offered over 80 different textures of clear glass to choose from, which would replace traditional colors in separating sections or pieces.
**The Studio's Glass Collection**
To showcase their extensive collection of stained glass textures, Studio J has created a unique space for display. As Kevin and Judy walked through the dungeon – aptly named so by Greg, the studio's craftsman – they marveled at the variety of textures on offer. From ripple glass made by the Whimsy Glass Company in West Virginia to water glass, each piece was carefully selected to add depth and interest to Asha's design.
**The Crafting Process**
With the design finalized, it was time for Greg to bring the stained glass piece to life. Using specialized tools and techniques, he began to cut out the intricate shapes from the glass. The cutting process involved aligning the grain of the glass with the desired pattern, carefully scoring the glass before snapping it into place.
As the piece took shape, Judy watched in awe as Greg expertly refined the edges using gring pliers and a grinder. With each step, the design began to take form, and Kevin and Asha were eager to see the finished product. The next stage would involve constructing the lead frame, soldering the joints, and applying cement to secure everything together.
**The Finishing Touches**
While Judy excused herself to allow the studio to work on their masterpiece, Kevin and Asha were shown a rough estimate of how long the entire process would take. "Trying about two weeks," Greg said with confidence. After that, the stained glass piece would be complete, ready for Asha to collect and enjoy.
As the video concluded, Judy thanked Kevin and Greg for sharing their expertise with her. The studio's experience and craftsmanship shone through in every detail of the process, from the initial design consultation to the final, finished product. Whether you're a seasoned stained glass enthusiast or just starting out, Studio J is an excellent resource for anyone looking to bring a unique piece of art into their home.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi hi you must be Judy hi it's nice to meet you yes Kevin welcome to Studio J oh thank you so I hear um that you are the one making the design that Asha Drew correct yep we met with Asha and her mom and she gave me her design very good but before we get into that tell me about Studio J A fascinating place we're a Stained Glass studio we've been in business for 45 years my my husband and I started it um wow our children work here but uh really the people who do our stain glass are not our children but they've been here for almost 30 years and for 22 Yeah practically family yes okay um so what do you think of the design is this typically how it works where someone actually draws it out for you or never that lucky is this your guys rendition of it sort of on the yeah I had to show her how it could really be rendered in glass because large pieces like she shows can't really be done without um concern for breakage right so so a little bit of support along some side like there Goa okay after that then they came and just we we discussed the type of glass you might like right did they decide on the type of glass that we're going to be working absolutely they decided to stay with different textures of clear luckily we have about 80 textures of clear that you can choose from so instead of the colors separating sections or pieces the texture will do that correct yeah very nice yeah well I mean if you've got samples of these but they're closer to the layout downstairs I'd love to see that absolutely we'll take you down and show you way all righty we're going to go this way to the dungeon so this is the dungeon this is where we construct all the stained glass windows we have almost all the glass cut for you over here on the side wow that is spectacular yeah these are all of the different textures that they chose so what is this texture for example what do you call this this is a ripple Ripple uhhuh made by the whism glass company in West Virginia and so obviously there's a just a basic clear next to it or actually no this is actually called water glass if you can look you'll see a slight texture to it yeah and all of the glass will have a different texture I was wondering what it was going to look like with no color but the different textures is definitely distinctive it creates such an amazing pattern MH what meticulous work how does this all get sort of done and this is all done by Greg our Craftsman Greg nice to meet you likewise um you do know that they call it the dungeon right I named it that oh you you did y okay that's good uh Judy says you've been with the outfit for a while 94 wow over 20 years right that's terrific okay uh well can you show us the process we've been promised that you're the cutter designer we're going to take this piece right here first a petal of the lotus flower mhm awesome let's see what you do so do so we're going to line up our grain which where we want it we're going to take this larger piece trim it down you have aligned the grain of the glass to match what you want for the pedal yeah it has a slightly elongated pattern so we want that to go along with the longer way of the shape y so this is just freehand huh yep so now that we've made our scores on here we have to break the glass away to refine the shape okay can use our gring pliers and just GL a little down outwards force and hear a little snap look at that that simple little score that's our piece now we got a little tiny burs around the edge sometimes we're going to clean up on our grinder come over here check for the fit I'm not going to be surprised if this is a perfect fit and it is you like that yep awesome so one more pedal to cut and then everything is laid out and cut yes sir where do you go from here after gray constructs it with the lead and solders all the joints we'll then use a cement to go between the lead in the glass to keep it tight and weatherproof H well I won't get in the way of your guys work anymore I'll excuse myself but how long until sort of the whole process is done and we're able to come back and pick it up between the construction the soldering the cementing and final drawing trying about two weeks awesome well Judy thank you I appreciate the door everything you're doing Greg terrific I'll get out of here cuz it is a dungeon after all thank
