Exciting Changes Ahead for Google's Wear OS
Google is about to go through some exciting changes and their changes for the better, which we're looking at a demonstration version of the new version of Wear OS right now. We're going to have a closer look at some of those changes that are coming in to your wrist very soon.
One of the first things we notice about this new version of Wear OS is the notification sensor that pulls down from the top of the screen. It has had a complete redesign, and includes music settings which used to be hidden away under the Play Music app and other swipes, but are now right there with your quick notification and quick settings when you swipe down from the top of the screen. This is a really nice addition because one thing we've often had a problem with on Wear OS is notification strains.
We swipe up from the bottom screen just as before, but now it's been so well redesigned that we get more on the screen and this clever use of color, with the use of spacing in between the text and the lines means it's much easier on the eye. There's going to be a lot less scrolling and flicking through pointless notifications to get what you want to see, which is a huge benefit when you tap a notification. You get quick access to smart replies, and can refine them with just a swipe to dismiss.
One of the design changes that we're really excited about is this new version of Wear OS doesn't stop there. If you may have seen recently that Google Fit was updated, all of those updates now work on Wear OS. We get this activity ring system which is now much more focused on your activity during the day in two key ways: your heart health and your movement health. All of those tracks are directly on the watch, and they obviously link up with the Google Fit app on your phone.
This activity ring system is swiped in from the side rather than going through the menu system to find it. It's right there, and it shows how much Google is concentrating on sports wear for future watches. This is a really interesting feature if you think of it like some of the swiping screens you get on a phone where you'll have a list of the things you're going to do during the day and reminders. This works in a very similar way just on your wrist, increasing functionality and usefulness on a daily basis.
You can see all the usual things that we'd expect Google assistant to give us, like flight details, by simply adding a swipe but the screen which is really nice and paired with all of these additional design features. The other features are still there as usual: you've got assignable buttons for the crown and you've got music and of course your app system which looks very similar to before in the same places that they were before.
This new version of Wear OS is going to be compatible with both iOS and Android, but one thing to note is that iOS notifications will be the big change because they don't work in the same way. Everything else will be there as you see here, Google tells us that it's going to be compatible with all Wear OS watches. If you've got a Wear LS on your watch on your wrist already, you'll be getting this update and it's coming from September onwards. We're expecting to see various different new watches over the coming months with this pre-installed, so we're pretty excited about the new Wear OS.
