Audi TT RS v Mercedes-AMG A45 v Ford Focus RS _ Ultimate all-weather Audi TT RS review _ Autocar

Audi's Ctra 1 has become the market niche that Audi is really trying to dominate with a Quattro written large on the front bumper, what more journey today so we've been at Holland for a few hours now I've already had a chance to do plenty of driving in the Ford and the AMG and to set some lap times and get well used to this rally stage it's so interesting really interesting stretches of circuit it's it's only 0.7 of a mile long but the surface is sort of more like compacted snow than on tarmac you really really have to pick your way around at times and really in these cars you just very seldom get out a third gear anywhere around here you really have to keep the speed down so what they've done well is set a lap time of forty six point seven seconds and the AMG surprise-surprise like a bit quicker it did a forty five point three so there's just over a second between them and that's more or less what you would expect really that the Ford was good fun it was a little bit lacking for grip at the front end I was surprised at that but it really wants to get an understeering more than the AMG and at the focus you have to be patient with the focus and make sure that the front end is settled and then because of that drive frame you can just drive the car into new currency or into oversteer if you want to and obviously we've got a man your handbrake so that brings up the advantages my try - - the AMG to be honest felt at least a second quicker from behind the wheel it was it was rolling a little bit more but ultimately it felt more precise it was developing more grip an AMG is a car you really drive on it knows our sessions I've got the optional slipping from dip and it brings a real benefit to the handling because you can go into college more quickly AMG and then work that front-end balance the car on the brake and ultimately have the car pointing in the direction that you want it to go before you come back on the power where does this lb fit in you may be wondering well it certainly feels like the more natural athlete here it is lower it is more direct on the searing it is developing plenty of grip when it takes attitude as you can see it does it pretty quickly but before with drive system is only really giving me traction and stability it's not giving me an option to adjust the handling much much force does funny though I'm not sure this thing is actually developing an awful lot more grip than the AMG it goes from grip to slip quite suddenly right so we'll come round this last one here try to make this our kite laughs here we go let me tell you through that right come on along we get it look right what are we doing well forty five point five so that it's actually slower to ten slower than the AMG just over a second quicker than the fort and that doesn't surprise me it feels it feels like it belongs in between the two this car cracking power train if the Chevy was on the same level it would certainly be quicker but it's just not giving you as much back there isn't the same information coming through the steering you don't have the confidence and I'm honest on a surface like there's confidence really is everything where it's with the ing you get to a point and it feels like it's working really well you're going to shatter really well getting exactly as much Nathaniel he was exactly where you want it here it's also nine and a half ten and you don't feel like you can make it go any faster with the LD you're sort of guessing you're thinking maybe you should go a bit quicker and then before you know it you're pointing the wrong way so when I spend my fifty one thousand pounds on this car I probably wouldn't on the road it's a really impressive thing this car but the most impressive thing it does is it just makes the business of going fast preposterous ly easy it could afford to be more difficult to draw it I think if it made it a bit more interesting and engaging yeah I think my money would go on the 8:45 tour if it was really my money I probably save another 10 grand and by default and then someone comes home with it you've got to come somewhere on it it's brilliant

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthe Audi TT has proven a bit difficult to take seriously as a proper sports car these last couple of decades for all sorts of reasons because it's only metal because it's predominantly front-wheel drive because it was originally built on a hatchback platform but most of all because it's a car mainly for people who would choose style over sporting substance it's just a bit easy to be dismissive about not so easy though when a TP in question is the one you can hear haul it away behind me it's a new TT RS now this car is made ways in the affordable sports car market because it's come in with an S 400 horsepower five cylinder engine and acceleration claims of nought to sixty two miles an hour in just 3.7 seconds which is faster than most Porsche 911s nevermind 718 claims so just have seriously chosen cases well let's find out we've come along to Oulton Park where the good people here have let us loose on their excellent tarmac rally stage and we've brought along a couple of TT RS is nearest and not so dearest rivals to keep it honest the first is the owner of this year's most tricks four-wheel drive system the Ford Focus RS and the second is the 376 horsepower Mercedes a45 AMG the 1r sports car rivals today well because you wouldn't really expect a rear-wheel drive Porsche 718 or an Alfa 4c to be able to live with a hot four-wheel drive Audi on on this sort of low grip tarmac surface but second to me four-wheel drive all-weather any occasion performance cars have become a market niche in their own right now it's the market niche of the for Focus RS and the Mercedes a45 and to me that's the niche that Audi is really trying to dominate with a ctra I mean it's a car with Quattro written large on the front bumper what more journey today so we've been at Holland for a few hours now I've already had a chance to do plenty of driving in the Ford and the AMG and to set some lap times and get well used to this to this rally stage it's so interesting really interesting stretches of circuit it's it's only 0.7 of a mile long but the surface is sort of more like compacted snow than on tarmac you really really have to pick your way around at times and really in these cars you just very seldom get out a third gear anywhere around here you really have to keep the speed down so what they've done well the fault set a lap time of forty six point seven seconds and the AMG surprise-surprise like a bit quicker it did a forty five point three so there's just over a second between them and that's more or less what you would expect really that the Ford was good fun it was a little bit lacking for grip at the front end I was surprised at that but it really wants to get an understeering more than the AMG ad at the focus you have to be patient with the focus and make sure that the front end is settled and then because of that drive frame you can just drive the car into new currency or into oversteer if you want to and obviously we've got a man your handbrake so that brings up the advantages my try - - the AMG to be honest felt at least a second quicker from behind the wheel it was it was rolling a little bit more but ultimately it felt more precise it was developing more grip an AMG is a car you really drive on it knows our sessions I've got the optional slipping from dip and it brings a real benefit to the handling because you can go into college more quickly AMG and then work that front-end balance the car on the brake and ultimately have the car pointing in the direction that you want it to go before you come back on the power and where does this lb fit in you may be wondering well it certainly feels like the more natural athlete here it is lower it is more direct on the searing it is developing plenty of grip when it takes attitude as you can see it does it pretty quickly but before with drive system is only really giving me traction and stability it's not giving me an option to adjust the handling much much force does funny though I'm not sure this thing is actually developing an awful lot more grip than the AMG it goes from grip to slip quite suddenly right so we'll come round this last one here try to make this our kite laughs here we go let me tell you through that right come on along we get it look right what are we doing well forty five point five so that it's actually slower to ten slower than the AMG just over a second quicker than the fort and that doesn't surprise me it feels it feels like it belongs in between the two this car cracking power train if the Chevy was on the same level it would certainly be quicker but it's just not giving you as much back there isn't the same information coming through the steering you don't have the confidence and I'm honest on a surface like there's confidence really is everything where it's with the ing you get to a point and it feels like it's working really well you're going to shatter really well getting exactly as much Nathaniel he was exactly where you want it here it's also nine and a half ten and you don't feel like you can make it go any faster with the LD you're sort of guessing you're thinking maybe you should go a bit quicker and then before you know it you're pointing the wrong way so when I spend my fifty one thousand pounds on this car I probably wouldn't on the road it's a really impressive thing this car but the most impressive thing it does is is it just makes the business of going fast preposterous ly easy it could afford to be more difficult to draw it I think if it made it a bit more interesting and engaging yeah I think my money would go on the 8:45 tour if it was really my money I probably save another 10 grand and by default and then someone comes home with it you've got
