My Ultimate RGB Gaming Desk Setup 2017 _ 2018 _ The Tech Chap

My Current Desk Setup: A Bold Experiment with Corsair Peripherals

As I sat down to create this video, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and trepidation. My current desk setup had served me well over the years, but for this video, I wanted to try something new – something that would showcase my love for gaming peripherals in all their colorful glory. And so, I reached out to Corsair, a brand synonymous with high-performance gaming gear, to see if they'd be willing to help me kit out a brand-new desk setup.

The Benefit of Single-Brand Peripherals

When I opted to go all-in on Corsair peripherals, I was drawn to the convenience and customization options that come with using a single brand. With their desktop app, I could seamlessly sync and control all my lighting across various devices, from my keyboard to mousemat, headphones, and even smart lights. This level of integration was both exciting and intimidating, as I knew I'd have to get used to a whole new world of RGB possibilities.

Playing Around with Corsair Utility Engine

I spent hours playing around with the Corsair Utility Engine, experimenting with different effects and settings. I wanted to see what the lighting could do, and how it would look across my entire setup. In the end, I settled on a random color shift pattern that slowly cycled through the RGB spectrum, with all my peripherals syncing up in perfect harmony. The result was nothing short of stunning – every device on my desk seemed to come alive, as if bathed in an otherworldly glow.

My Corsair Peripherals

So, what did I end up with? A whole range of premium gaming peripherals that would make any gamer jealous. At the heart of it all was the Corsair K95 Platinum RGB mechanical keyboard, a behemoth of a device that boasted Cherry MX keys, 6 programmable macro keys, a full-size numpad, and media controls. The price tag? A whopping £160 / $160, which is certainly not cheap, but for a premium product like this, it's hard to argue with the value.

Next up was the Glaive RGB gaming mouse, which I'd paired with the MM800C RGB Polaris Mousemat and ST100RGB headphone stand. The mouse itself was a joy to use, with smooth tracking, 5 different DPI settings, and a satisfying weight that made it feel substantial in hand. However, there were some minor quibbles – namely, the tendency for the cable to get caught on the USB notch/hub at the top of the hub, which is something I've seen others complain about as well.

The Corsair Void Pro RGB Wireless Headphones

But the pièce de résistance was undoubtedly the wireless Corsair Void Pro RGB headphones. Not only did they sound incredibly good, with audio quality that rivaled even the most expensive models, but they were also remarkably comfortable to wear – although I did find the fit of the headphone cups to be a bit loose at the bottom, and they had a tendency to fall off my head when not in use.

The Philips Hue Smart Lights

I'd paired my Corsair peripherals with a couple of Philips Hue smart lights, which added an extra layer of customization to my desk setup. With their infinitely customizable LED bulbs, I could adjust the color, brightness, and even timing using the app or voice commands through Amazon Alexa. It was a subtle touch that added a whole new level of elegance to my setup.

The Downside: Cables

Now, while all this RGB goodness had its fans, there was one major downside – cables. Oh, so many cables! While I knew they were necessary for keeping everything powered and connected, it did make the overall look of my desk a bit cluttered and messy. I'd always been a fan of clean, minimalist setups, but even I couldn't deny the allure of these bright, pulsing lights.

The Verdict: Can You Have Too Much RGB?

As I sat back to admire my handiwork, I couldn't help but wonder – had I gone too far? Had I succumbed to the all-consuming allure of RGB goodness and lost sight of what truly mattered – performance, build quality, and above all else, fun? Only time would tell. But for now, I was happy to bask in the glow of my newfound setup, and invite you to join me on this wild ride into the world of gaming peripherals.

A Big Thank You to Corsair

I'd like to extend a massive thank you to Corsair for sending over all these incredible peripherals, allowing me to showcase them to such a wide audience. It's been an absolute pleasure working with their team, and I'm excited to see what other innovative products they have in store for us.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enThis is my current desk setup - and i'mpretty happy with it. But for this videoI wanted to try something a bit different -With tastefulnessand subtly well and truly thrown out the window -I've replaced my desk setupwith a whole range of colourful peripherals. So I got in touch with Corsair and asked if they wantedto help me kit out a cool new desk setup - andthe benefit of going for a single brand whetherit's Corsair or CoolerMaster or Logitechor whoever you like - is you can use their desktop appsto customise and sync all the lighting together. So I played around with Corsair Utility Engine, trying out a bunch of the effects. But I settledon a random colour shift pattern WITH thelighting link option enabled so basicallyit slowly goes through the whole RGB spectrum, but all the products are synced up - fromthe headphone stand to the mousemat so itactually looks really good.So in this setup I've got the Corsair K95Platinum RGB mechanical keyboard, the GlaiveRGB gaming mouse.. Glaive... Glaive. It makes me think of this...the MM800C RGB Polaris Mousemat, the ST100RGB headphone stand and finally the wirelessCorsair Void Pro RGB gaming headphones. On top of the ST100 RGB headphone stand! All in - you're looking at about £400or $500 - which is a lot of money - but theseare premium gaming peripherals in their ownright - But to be fair yes you could probablysave a hundred quid and give the rgb mousematand headphone stand a miss - they're definitelyluxuries rather than necessities.I've also paired my corsair peripheralswith a couple of Philips Hue smart lights,This is the Philips Hue Go Builb (£60) - which I keep on my desk, replacing an old Aukey lamp. This is infinitly customisable - and I can adjust using the app or with my voice using the amazon echo or google home.If that wasn't enough - the Ultrawide monitor I'm using - the ASUS PG348Q also projects a republic of gamerslogo onto my desk, you can turn it off butit's extra lighting option if you want it.So I may have gone a bit RGB Mad - but i'm happy with this setup and I've been using it for a couple of days now. There are couple of things I've noticed while using these I'd like to share with you.The mousemat - which I do really like - the soft-touch material is really comfortable. But the problem is - when I then use the Glaive mouseYou can see the mouse's cable gets caught on the USB notch/hub at the topwhich is not ideal - and I thinkLogitech have a slightly better solution withthe wireless G903 mouse which actually chargeson their powerplay mouse mats - so you don'tget any of this cable bungie-ing.The Glaive mouse is really comfortable touse, with smooth tracking and 5 differentDPI settings and The 3-zone RGB lighting looksgood - and generally it's a really nice mouse to use.although there isn't any weight adjustmentand with only two buttons on the left side,it's got limited customisability so it'snot for pro gamers. I have to say though I think my favourite peripheral is the Corsair K95 keyboard. The Cherry MX mechanical keys arereally responsive - and as you would expect it's really loud! It's also got 6 programmable Macro keysFull size numpad and media controls.Lighting strip at the top. Fully backlit keys.Really, really impressive keyboard. The biggest issue though is the price at around £160 / $160Which is a lot of money - but this is a premium mechanical gaming keyboard. But what about the headphones - well these Corsair Void Pro Wireless RGB headphones sound great.Audio quality is very impressive - and in the corsair utility software you can customise EQ's and even enable virtualdolby 7.1 surround sound which is good forgaming. They're also really comfortableto wear, but I find the headphone cups havequite a loose fit, especially at the bottom. They're still comfortable to wear though - but a tighter fit on the cups would be good.and... they fall of quite easily too heh! The best bit though is the price...At around £80 / $100, they're good valuefor money. And they do sound great.but when I'm finished gaming - what am I going to do with these??I don't know how we survived without headphone standsThis is the Corsair ST100 RGB headphone stand.Which will cost you around £50.Quite a lot of money - but actually it's a really well made product.Full metal body - RGB lighting strip - and USB port for charging the headphones. Now obviously all this RGB lighting doesn'thave any effect on your gaming performanceit's for aesthetics - for looks. it'sessentially the equivalent of go-faster stripeson a car. But while I personally prefer acleaner, more minimalist setup with as fewcables as possible - I also really get theappeal - especially when it's dark and you'rein gaming mode - it looks really awesome.and all these lights mean you can have a consistentlighting theme across your entire setup. The downside for me is cables - I'm surewith a few cable ties and a bit better managementwould make it look a lot better - but I prefer the clean look.and when you've got cables for the mouse, mousemat, headphone stand and the headphonesfor charging - it can get a bit messy. But that's really my only issue. So I've gone RGB mad as you can see! A big thanks to Corsair for sending all this out and I'm looking forward toPlaying with the setup some more, tweaking it, changing a few things up. I might bring back some of my old peripherals as well. But the big question is: Can you have too much RGB?
