AMD is Really Back.
**AMD CES 2019: Exciting Announcements and New Technologies**
At this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), AMD made some surprisingly cool announcements that are sure to excite PC enthusiasts. I'm Austin, and I'll be sharing with you the highlights of what they had to showcase.
### **Radeon VII: A High-End GPU to Take on RTX 2080**
First up, we have the Radeon VII, which is AMD's first high-end GPU in quite a while. This new graphics card is aimed directly at the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 and promises to deliver about 30% more performance than the Vega 64. What's even more impressive is that it comes with a whopping 16 gigabytes of HBM2 memory, which is double what you'd find on the RTX 2080.
### **Third Generation Ryzen: A Hybrid Design for Unmatched Performance**
Next, AMD showcased their third generation Ryzen CPUs, which are built on a seven nanometer process and feature a hybrid design. This means that the actual CPU itself is modular, similar to how Threadripper works. The most impressive aspect of this is that it seems to have a similar level of performance to Intel's Core i9, but with significantly lower power consumption.
### **Ryzen 3: A Powerhouse for Gaming and Content Creation**
While we won't see the Ryzen 3 until mid-year, what they've shown so far is incredibly impressive. This new CPU promises to deliver top-notch gaming and content creation performance, making it a serious competitor in the market.
### **Second Generation Ryzen Mobile: Faster and More Powerful Laptops**
AMD also announced their second generation Ryzen mobile CPUs, which are built on a 12 nanometer process and offer even better performance than the first generation. What's exciting is that this new technology will enable more options for gaming laptops, making them a great choice for gamers.
### **Radeon VII Availability and Performance Expectations**
The Radeon VII will go on sale on February 7th, and while it may not quite match the performance of the RTX 2080 in every aspect, I'm still excited to see AMD playing in this space. Even at $700, which is a lot, it's great to see them pushing the boundaries.
### **AMD's Continued Growth and Competition**
What's most impressive about CES for me this year is how AMD is continuing to step up their game. The stronger they become, the harder Intel has to work to keep up. This increased competition will ultimately benefit PC enthusiasts like us, as it drives innovation and better products.
In conclusion, AMD's announcements at CES 2019 are exciting news for anyone interested in PC hardware. With the Radeon VII, third generation Ryzen, and second generation Ryzen mobile CPUs, they're offering some of the best performance on the market today.
WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: en- Hey guys, this is Austin. At CES this year, AMD hassome surprisingly cool stuff. So first of all, we have Radeon VII.Now this is the firsthigh-end GPU from AMDin quite a while, andit is aiming directlyat the RTX 2080.The reason it's called Radeon VIIis it basically bringsthe Vega GPU architecturedown to a seven nanometer process. Now there are a ton of technicalreasons why this is cool, but the main thing is,is that this really gets them much morein the competitive landscape, especially considering theRTX is kind of far and awaythe fastest graphics thatyou can get right now.You should be able to expectabout 30% more performancethan Vega 64, whichdoes put this very muchin the ballpark of RTX 2080.And importantly, it shouldbe able to play gamesin a full 4K 60 in a lot of cases. It's also backed up by a pretty impressive16 gigabytes of HBM2 memory, double what you'refinding on the RTX 2080.On top of that, because thisis the very first graphics cardthat's built on seven nanometer, they're really able to push the clocks. It goes on sale on February seventh, and I gotta say, even ifit's not quite as goodas the RTX 2080, I am so excited to seeAMD really playing in this spaceand bringing some propergraphics performance.Even though seven hundreddollars is still a lot. What's even more exciting this yearis third generation Ryzen. Now Ryzen's been really impressive to mebecause they iteratingand keep making it betterat such a quick rate, and Ryzen third-genmight just be the biggest jump yet.Like Radeon VII, this is thefirst seven nanometer AMD CPU,and what's cool about it is thatit's actually a hybrid design. So the actual CPU itself is modular, kind of like howThreadripper is, for example. So in theory, even though eight coresis the limit right now,we could see it go even higher. What's most impressive about thisis that it seems to have a similar levelof performance to the Core i9,though you have to take thatwith a massive grain of salt. But if it's able to do that, and what they're showing is thatit's significantly lower level of power.Ryzen 3 could be super super impressive. Now it will not be out untilthe middle of this year, but from what they've shown so far,it is incredibly impressive. If that's not enough Ryzen for you, there's also the secondgeneration Ryzen Mobile. Now this is a very similarlevel of performanceto what we're seeing tothe first generation,it does come down to a12 nanometer process, and it is a little bit faster. What's cool is there's now alot more options available. What we're seeing is Ryzen cominginto proper gaming laptops. So there's the ASUS TUF FX505 behind me,which is a fully AMD setup. It has a FreeSync displaythat goes up to 120 hertz,it does have the new secondgeneration Ryzen Mobile, and it even has a Radeon 560x GPU.Okay, so I'm just gonnaget close to the camerabecause I can't step backward. What's cool about Ryzensecond-gen on the mobile side,is that you do havethat 35 watt TDP option. So essentially normal Ryzen Mobileis mostly meant for Ultrabooks, but if you want to putit in a thicker chassiswhich has better cooling, you can get much higher boost clocks, which is especially important for gaming.Going way down thestack, there are also nowAMD powered Chromebooks withtheir A6 and A4 processors. Now these aren't exactly super high tech,it's actually from thepre-Ryzen actual architecture,so it means that it's notgoing to be blazing fast, but considering that usually Chromebooksare in the two-threehundred dollar category, this should give you more performanceand importantly better graphicsthan what you will find in ARM or Intel. But that, I'm very curious to see later, because a lot of these Chromebooksare actually shipping very very soon.Look, what's impressiveabout CES for me this yearis how AMD is continuingto step it up, right? The stronger AMD is, it meansthe harder Intel has to workto make better chips, topush it like more cores, higher clock speeds, just to push thingsand push the envelope.Same thing on the graphics side right?Nvidia obviously has had their stumbleswith the RTX side of things, and while yes, Radeonis maybe not quite upto that same level ofperformance in a lot of aspects, but the fact that AMD isstill trying with stufflike the Radeon VII is areally really good sign. The more that there'scompetition in the PC space, the better everyone is, Ican't stress that enough. It's so easy to think that,"Oh cool, there's this new GPU,"it's 5% faster, there's this new CPU,"it's 7% faster."Oh, it's two hundred dollars more? What?"That's just not good right? That's not good for anybody. So the fact that AMD is out hereand doing such a good jobspecifically with Ryzenand even with Radeon, isgood for absolutely everyone.
