The Porsche 718 Cayman is a revolutionary sports car that has pushed the boundaries of engineering and technology. One of its most impressive features is its battery voltage, which stands at 130 volts per se. This high voltage is necessary to power the car's advanced electric motor. However, what happens when there's a power outage? The driver must rely on the car's manual gearbox, a 7-speed PDK that has been heavily reworked to accommodate the car's unique layout and powertrain.
The PDK gearbox is a modified version of the one used in Porsche's Turbo models. To reduce the car's center of gravity, the gearbox was flipped upside down, which required significant modifications. Despite these challenges, the PDK gearbox proved to be an excellent choice for this application. The gearbox can operate seamlessly with either the electric motor or the V8 engine, providing a unique and exciting driving experience.
The electric motor itself is capable of producing 400 Newton meters (or approximately 300 horsepower) of torque. This impressive amount of power is generated by the car's advanced battery pack, which allows the car to accelerate rapidly from a standstill. When the driver floors it, the car can reach incredible speeds in a matter of seconds.
One of the most interesting features of this car is its hybrid system, which combines the electric motor with the V8 engine. This setup provides several advantages over traditional sports cars, including improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. The hybrid system allows the car to operate at extremely low levels of energy consumption, making it an ideal choice for drivers who want to experience the thrill of a high-performance sports car without sacrificing too much on the environment.
When it comes to weight distribution, the 718 Cayman is surprisingly lightweight. With an estimated curb weight of just 2,700 pounds (1,223 kg), the car is significantly lighter than many of its competitors. This reduced weight allows for improved handling and agility, making the car a joy to drive on twisty roads or at high speeds.
The Nurburgring, a notoriously challenging racing circuit, has already played host to several prototypes of this car. In fact, one prototype completed the famous 12-mile (19 km) track in just under 6 minutes and 40 seconds, setting a new benchmark for electric sports cars. While the production version is not yet available for the public to drive on the Nurburgring, it's clear that Porsche has made significant strides in terms of performance and efficiency.
When asked about the car's development process, the engineer revealed that the entire project took just four years to complete. This incredible turnaround was made possible by the team's dedication and expertise, as well as their willingness to push the boundaries of what is possible with electric powertrains.
One of the most fascinating aspects of this car is its ability to seamlessly integrate both electric and combustion-powered engines. In normal driving conditions, the car runs on pure electric power, but when the driver needs a boost, the V8 engine kicks in to provide additional power. This setup allows the car to achieve an impressive 70 miles per gallon (27 km/l) in European testing, compared to just 45 miles per gallon (16 km/l) in US testing.
The car's sound system is also noteworthy, as it has been designed to create a unique and immersive driving experience. With the car running on electric power, the driver can feel the engine purring quietly beneath them, creating an almost silent driving experience. This, combined with the car's incredible acceleration and handling capabilities, makes for a truly unforgettable driving experience.
Finally, the Porsche 718 Cayman is a testament to the company's commitment to innovation and forward thinking. As the automotive industry continues to evolve and adopt new technologies, it will be exciting to see how this car's hybrid system and advanced battery pack shape the future of sports cars.

attention this is the 918 Porsche now you might remember a couple years ago we showed a prototype and we drove it a few feet and but it was a one-off this is the final design this is what the customer car will look like I want you to meet the Frank what is your exact title I'm Dee - I Nadine part of the 980 Frank I think what was it perfect ah there you go and you're the the man behind this beautiful job thank you a nice looking car and it's just the right size you know cars get so big and fat and wide to creep up this is nimble car very nimble car let's go over the technical specs what's the horsepower the horsepower are we in the times of a hybrid you have to talk about the system power in power is 887 horsepower in total all right so we have formed a combustion engine through 608 horsepower it's a normally aspirated v8 and then we have an additional 285 from the electric motors and one is the comedy leader four point six is six point six okay and a brand new v8 it's a brand new only for this car right right right so again that's a nice thing about Porsche everything is bespoke - this car isn't it doesn't really share it we have well some bolts and nuts well I'm yeah and yeah I can show you to carry over the only one the rest is new only only made for this car now you know something a lot of people do not know in America this Ferrari is not the only prancing horse out there you guys had the prancing horse before Ferrari crap so there you go well that's why well it is a beautiful design a beautiful car all carbon fiber yeah complete body shells come 5 also the structure is complete carbon fiber Ryan I love I love these exposed carbon fiber here very nicely done it's part of device off package right and the exhaust coming out the top that's uh that's a unique way yeah that's really that that really says it all the only car in the world was another one this was 263 Batmobile okay yeah I think there's a lot faster than the Batman it is and what does a car way do you know in kilograms it's 1630 okay so 30 to 300 pounds yes certainly sir what is the battery capacity it's 6.8 kilowatt hours it gives you a mileage of approximately 10 to 16 miles okay great very good and of course this is what the future is gonna be you know so many European cities are talking about not allowing the cars in that put out too much emissions and consequently your choice is either you ban those cars altogether or you have some of those when you drive right up to the city limit you switch to electric or you drive in I mean it's a brilliant solution it gives you the best of the best of both worlds interestingly it tremendously improves also the performance of the car right because we are using the electric motors for pushing really the limits on the performance and we get the energy back by braking now the electric motors power the front wheels yes what we have one in the front right 95 kilowatts and one in the back okay hundred fifteen kilowatts right so both front and back are powered by electric as well okay so we have an electric four-wheel drive incorrect exactly okay and it's not that far from the prototype we looked at a couple years ago definitely you know I'm so glad they kept the exhaust because that's that's really they don't really unique yeah and a nice solution now a dumb question but rain or when washing the car I mean it's hand wash but you see it's it's to to tubes right and if the rain comes down it's the EDA the bigger tube with the diameter so there's no water goes down and goes in the engine bay and and out of the car so no problem and this is your is it the electric polaric on this side and cause fuel on the other just open it oh I see and it's a standard 240 plug yeah you can you will have this is the European specification for the u.s. you get us specific right right then you can charge it 120 110 240 although it doesn't look like any other Porsche I've ever seen it looks like a Porsche so that's really for DNA's yeah even with some some new details edges and still a Porsche does the regen work on deceleration does it working yet brakes on the brakes okay and also with the engine so it depends on the driving strategy we have for general driving strategies and then we do the region depending on braking we have some extra power from the engine did it take a lot of engineering expertise to overcome the the regen and still have the brake feel yes that was a tricky one this is definitely the biggest task in a high performance hybrid yeah who has a proper feeling of the brake pedal right that you cannot feel the difference between electric braking hydraulic braking but it's solution in disguise also it's really good very very good yeah because people have never driven the car are complaining about it but no yes so they don't know what they don't know and then electric power steering electric power steering everything is electric ray a conditioned power steering everything so we have we have no belt on the on the engine anymore right ok don't need it is there a separate battery that runs the engines separate from the lithium ion or is it all the same two batteries we have okay more 12-volt route a standard Network right 12-volt and then we have the big battery voltage so 130 per se there's a power outage and you have no electricity available and you've used up the electricity you just started and drive it as a normal car exactly right okay very good very good tell me about the transmission the transmission is a 7-speed PDK okay basic coming from the PDK gearbox is from porsche we took the one of the turbo but we flipped it upside down to have a lower center of gravity and for that we have to rework the gearbox heavily and also especially for this car but the gearbox is only running through the v8 motor or does it it's a great loss including like the layout of a Panamera it's the electric motor entente v8 so we can we can bring both engines together this makes it sorry electric motors actually shifts as well that's interesting okay shift in de Becque does not shift me front ok gadgets so front is direct though it's not like this one chief okay and how much torque from the electric alone and 400 Newton meters okay Newton meter foot powder it's a lot it's all its yeah definitely enough and definitely enough like rolls-royce adequate yeah this is what I like about portion when I bought my courage et in 2005 that was the epitome of engineering and high tech and with especially with the manual gearbox and then to completely change direction and come out with a totally new package is ISM and that short of time what was the development time since car about four years no less three years Wow okay it's really a positive development it's a race but it fits to a race car there's anything open yeah for sure we keep we can open the hood let's say yeah when your wife says we're taking a trip you go honey no not you have to put the room yeah honey you send your stuff ahead okay is it take to move this is again lighter than Karachi Wow seven pounds Wow not gonna get much of a workout using these seven pounds and obviously looking and my boy feel how Mike Mannix yeah what is this whole hood weigh about 35 pounds 22 22 22 okay we're gonna take this for a ride have they done the Nurburgring in this yet 714 with the prototypes there's a prototype a year ago so we are in pure electric right now up until you get what maybe one-third throttle half throttle something light a little bit one search I think 40% 40% this is all electric still electric the combustion poles are working European specification it's about seventy miles per gallon u.s. is 45 but it is extremely low for a 800 horsepower well in America you've got to get 54 miles per gallon by 25 and 25 is not that far away you know it's so funny like Mike Carrera is the last of the old school that's the very best just close the book and you move on you know if you go to race now
