Today we are on our way to Steamboat Springs to drive the Toyota GR Corolla at the Bridgestone Winter Driving School. Can the GR Corola somehow turned me into a winter driving wizard? Let's find out. Wow, Tyler, that's some really great snow driving super impressive. Yeah, that's not me though. I get a great laugh making you think that one day of instruction can get you here.
The truth is this type of driving is extremely difficult and at times even for our instructor. Oh no, a quick tug from our Forerunner friend and it was my turn to embarrass myself. We spent a great deal of time talking about weight transfer the method let off the accelerator to shift the weight forward and get the car to turn in then allow the back end to swing out wide and power out at least in theory. We used Camry and RAV fors to facilitate our foundational learnings.
One thing became abundantly clear all of our vehicles were riding on Bridgestone Blizzak tires which despite some of the slickest conditions I've ever driven in were able to seek out any available grip to get the car rotated. The RAV fours were also equipped with an ABS kill switch which for our second drill allowed us to see how the car reacted in a four-wheel lockup situation not shockingly it slides a lot. RAV fours are cool and all but it's time to drive what we came here for, the GR.
All right now we're doing a track portion um small limited track portion 70% of the torque is being sent to the back so let's give it a shot. I tried all three of the GR's torque splits which allow you to dial how much power you want sent to each axle 60/40, 50/50 and 30/70. I found 3070 personally to be the most fun allowing the back end of the car to get a bit playful this hot hatch is an absolute riot but don't worry just like our instructor my day wasn't without its embarrassing moments too.
And over the crest break let off the brake to get through the slom and roll and through the cones we got a little overzealous are we dragging a cone to be fair conditions were said to be some of the worst of the season fresh snow mixed with warmer than usual temperatures meant the track glazed into sheet ice throughout the day just getting into the driver's seat was shockingly difficult. Oh my God it's so it's so s my day in the GR Corolla might have been shortlived but in my time with it it proved to be a very capable car on snow and ice.
I'm a huge advocate of instructional driving courses like this most people go from point A to point B comfortably remaining within their vehicle's limits. It's only when someone merges into your lane when that limit is found add snow and ice and the limit is dramatically lowered. Instructional courses give a safe and legal environment to learn car control that could end up saving your life but I can't promise that your class will have a full lineup of GR Corollas on hand so very clearly the GR is great in these kind of conditions.
But just remember the car is just one piece of the puzzle with some decent tires and some practice you two can be prepared to handle any winter condition as well.
