How to Clean Behind the iMac's Glass Screen: A Step-by-Step Guide
As we all know, the glass screen on our iMacs can become foggy over time due to the air moving through the computer bringing in contaminants that deposit behind the glass and eventually become visible. However, fortunately, this is a very simple process to take care of, and it's generally only necessary to do once a year.
To start, you'll need three essential items: a clean lint-free cloth, a streak-free glass cleaner (I prefer a foaming cleaner like Sprayway), and a suction cup which can be picked up from Amazon for less than $10. The suction cup is the key tool in this process as it allows us to remove the glass panel without damaging the computer.
First, attach the suction cup to one of the upper corners of the glass panel, making sure you have a secure fit. Take note that the glass panel is hinged at the bottom, so you want to pull back at a slight angle. Don't worry about the glass sliding off, as it's held on by strong magnets. You'll need to apply some force, but be careful and make sure you have a good grip on the computer.
Once you've attached the suction cup, lift up to remove the glass panel. As you lift, you can see those metal hinges that will come in handy later for aligning the panel. Take a look at the bezel, which is holding the glass onto the computer with numerous magnets. You can also see some of the cushioning material to reduce vibration, as well as the FaceTime camera LED light and ambient light sensor behind the glass panel.
Behind the glass panel, you'll find the metal frame for the magnetic fastening system, as well as metal rivets that help to align the panel for installation. Now that we've removed the glass panel, let's take it over to a flat fabric-covered surface to work on. In my case, I'm using an ironing board. Remember, we only want to clean the inside of the glass panel, but be careful not to snag the metal rivets around the bezel as they're glued on and will pop off.
We need to wipe the surface clean and make sure no lint is left behind. Now that we've confirmed our dust-free area, it's time to clean the LCD panel. I'm using a slightly damp cloth to avoid spraying directly onto the computer. Once you've confirmed your dust-free status, it's time to reattach the glass panel. Simply realign the hinges at the bottom and let the glass fall back into place.
The magnets will take care of the rest, ensuring that the glass panel is securely attached to the computer. And that's all there is to it! With these simple steps, you'll be able to keep your iMac's glass screen clean and fog-free for years to come. Thanks for watching, and I'll see you again in the next video!
