A Critical Look at "Zombie Apocalypse" Game in Early Access
I recently had the opportunity to try out the early access version of the zombie apocalypse game, and I must say that it's a mixed bag. The game has a lot of potential, but it also falls short in several areas. One of the first things that struck me was the graphics. While the game tries to go for a pixelated aesthetic, it ends up feeling like a mishmash of different styles. The tiles and models are reminiscent of early Roller Coaster Tycoon games, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but in this case, it feels like they're trying too hard to achieve that retro look without quite pulling it off.
The game's art style is also somewhat jarring due to the large number of zombies on screen. With over 9,000 zombies running around at any given time, it's difficult to make out much detail in the graphics. The water effects are particularly underwhelming, with a lack of detail and texture that makes them feel more like something you'd find in a low-budget indie game. Overall, I think the game needs a bit more polish and cleanup before it can truly shine.
One feature that I would love to see implemented is procedural generation. Having a map that changes each time you play through the game would add a huge amount of replay value, as well as make the game feel less repetitive. Unfortunately, this isn't something that's currently available in the game. The map remains the same every time you start a new game, which can get old pretty quickly. Even with user-generated maps or a map editor, I think it would still be more fun to have some degree of unpredictability.
Speaking of gameplay, I was pleased to find that the core mechanics are enjoyable and addictive. Setting up turrets and defending against waves of zombies is a lot of fun, although it can feel a bit restricted at times. The game seems to be leaning towards a challenge perspective, with a limited number of turrets available for each level. While this can make the game more difficult and interesting, I also think that having more flexibility in terms of turret placement would be a big plus.
Another feature that I'd like to see implemented is an upgrade system that's a bit more intuitive. The current system seems to be based on a limited number of upgrades with unclear effects, which can lead to confusion when trying to manage resources effectively. Adding more clear labels and explanations for each upgrade would go a long way in making the game feel less overwhelming.
I also noticed that there doesn't seem to be any real consequence for having too many turrets. In other words, having 10 or 20 turrets up doesn't seem to make much of a difference in terms of gameplay, as long as you've got enough metal to support them. Introducing some kind of cost or penalty for having too many turrets would add an extra layer of strategy and challenge to the game.
Finally, I think it's worth mentioning that the game's audio and UI could use some work. The audio effects are often jarring and can be difficult to make out at times, while the UI is sometimes hard to read due to text sizes being too small. However, despite these issues, I did have a lot of fun playing the game, and I'm hoping that these issues will get ironed out in future updates.
In conclusion, "Zombie Apocalypse" has some great potential, but it needs some significant work before it can truly shine. With procedural generation, more intuitive upgrade systems, and some tweaks to the audio and UI, this could be a really enjoyable game. As it stands, I'd recommend checking it out in early access if you're interested in zombie apocalypse games, but be prepared for some rough edges.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhello everyone my name is eposvox and i was given early early access to the game called over 9 000 zombies typically when i'm sent a game where the game title or the developer has a basically a meme in the name i typically don't expect much however over 9000 zombies kind of did impress me i did enjoy my time with it it i was given access to it before it hit early access but it has just hit early access on steam is regularly available for 7.99 at time of recording it is available for 5.99 but of course the game is not fully out yet and i don't fully recommend buying games until they're actually released but the early access program is there so treat it as you wish over 9000 zombies is a top-down arcade twin stick zombie shooter experience basically the the game sends you through day after day after day of surviving against zombie hordes and you just have to kill as many of them as you can and try not to die for as long as you can pretty simple concept it supports gamepad and keyboard and mouse i've seen kind of split like one of the guys i talked to that plays this game sir crest he said he couldn't play it with the gamepad like he he really only wanted to play it with a keyboard and mouse i couldn't play it with the keyboard and mouse i like the mouse i don't know if it was negative acceleration bad acceleration i don't know what was going on but like i felt like i had absolutely no control over the cursor with the mouse it was really laggy and really odd so i played with the gamepad i'm used to playing games like caleb spartan assault with the gamepad anyway so the aiming isn't really all that issue all that much of an issue for me super initial first impression uh this game actually gave me a huge headache now context to that as far as what went into that i'm running it on a 1080p monitor and was wearing a headset at the time the game is very very loud and the gun shots are very repetitive and almost like piercing it's just that combined with the teeny tiny text and user interface so me squinting plus having just piercing gunshots going through my ears led to a headache the game itself was actually really fun though i do have some points i want to cover again the ui the ui is just teeny tiny and very hard to read and honestly in its current state it's effectively useless especially since your your character is always in the center so that's where your eyes need to focus since that's where the zombies are that are most important are going to be or in the center of chasing your character it is actually really difficult to keep moving aiming shooting and watching out for zombies and look at the user interface without dying i honestly couldn't tell you what all is on the user interface because i've not been able to spend much time looking at it the text throughout the entire game is teeny tiny so i'm constantly having to squint to look at it and keep in mind again i'm sitting like a foot away from my monitor i'm not and i'm not i have pretty good vision but things are really small an example of how this actually affected my gameplay i essentially spent 10 minutes thinking i was hitting a huge bug where i couldn't spawn any more turrets because i hadn't yet noticed there was a 6 out of 6 turret limit that i had hit i didn't even know the limit was there but i had already reached that limit and it was just not letting me place the turret it didn't tell me that when i chose the turret it just wasn't placing it and that really threw me off i even flipped through the menus check controls i just figured it wasn't accepting my input to place the turret but no there's a six out of six start limit even seeing which weapons i was getting or picking up was actually pretty difficult due to the tiny text um and there were a few instances where a weapon would spawn on the ground and i would not pick it up and i wasn't sure why and i thought maybe it was because it was a weapon already had but it can really tell cause i couldn't really read the text to see what weapon it was effectively i don't mind tiled or pixel graphics or 8-bit wannabe graphics or whatever but the models and tiles of over 9000 zombies kind of reminds me of early roller coaster tycoon games that's not really a good thing they need a bit more polish a bit more cleanup and the water needs a lot more detail something about like it's almost a cross between trying to go straight for pixelated you know pixel graphics and trying to go for not pixel graphics and you're just kind of hitting somewhere in the middle showing a bunch of like low resolution tiles on a high resolution game i i would like to i would honestly like to see the whole graphic scheme overhauled like i think a ha you know two and a half d setup would actually make this game really awesome and immersive i don't know how well that's gonna work and again this game is in early access anything could change at any moment there is no procedural generation to this game whatsoever the map does not change it is the same map every time you start a new game load your game whatever every area you go to it's going to look relatively the same and so while you can expand out and explore new areas if you leave your turrets behind you're not really going to survive all that long out there and so i don't really know how long this game would remain fun for someone sure there's that chase of you know trying to survive as long as possible but after maybe the second or third time of surviving as long as you could it may kind of die out on you that that's what i've already felt like it happened it felt like what's happening to me the map it just gets old when the map doesn't change you're just kind of doing the same thing over and over again and sure you can take different approaches but you're very constrained and i don't know i would love to see either or both procedural generation um just different maps to choose from or even user generated maps throw in a map editor you know throw in a set of tiles let users make the maps and choose from random maps to play there that adds a lot more dynamic aspect to the game lastly back on that six out of six third limit i don't think that should be in the game maybe make if you get past a certain point turrets cost more metal as you scale up or something but as massive as the map is and as as many zombies as you have running at you the game would frankly be a lot more fun if you could have a lot more turrets obviously it's it's probably restricted for a challenge perspective of hey you only have this many turrets good luck have fun but for me setting up a giant base with a bunch of turrets and then you know side bases and turn it almost into a tower defense setup would be really really cool but you're completely restricted on that so that's just me but that's what i would like to see i would like an ability to unlock how many turrets you have god mode does not work at all or if it has an effect i'm not sure what it is i know noticed no effect for it there was something else that wasn't working i don't honestly remember now you have no indication of what upgrades you're getting from the little upgrade barrels for your god mode a rapid fire or no reload and so if you accidentally pick up a second one you may not end up getting a better option so if it just had a bit of a text that says what it is before you pick it up it might be a bit more helpful but of course that text has to be bigger than the rest the text is at the moment because otherwise i wouldn't be able to see it anyway a lot of criticisms but again this game is in early access a lot could change that's why i'm not doing a formal review i just wanted to feature the game and give my thoughts on its current state as it launches into early access and all in all i've had a lot of fun with it i did get a headache initially from the audio and squinting but the gameplay the core gameplay itself is actually really enjoyable and so i hope to see this game get some good development and through early access hope you enjoyed the video guys link to the game will steam steam link to the game will
