Introducing Data Frame: A Weekly Podcast Exploring the Modern Data Science Landscape

I am super excited to be announcing data frame, a weekly podcast that explores the modern data science landscape. Data science is one of the fastest growing industries and has been called the sexiest job of the 21st century. But what exactly is data science? I'm Hugo van Anderson, a data scientist at Data Camp, and in this podcast, we'll approach this question by exploring what problems data science addresses and what it looks like in practice.

From Automated Medical Diagnosis and Self-Driving Cars to Recommendation Systems and Climate Change: A Journey with Experts

We'll come on a journey with experts from industry and academia to explore the profession that will change the course of the 21st century. Each episode of Data Frame will feature an in-depth interview with a working data scientist, providing insights into the current state of data science and its future prospects. We're starting 2018 with a bang by launching six episodes at once.

My First Guest: Hilary Mason, VP of Research at Cloudera Fast Forward Labs

My first guest will be Hilary Mason, VP of research at Cloudera fast forward labs, a machine intelligence research company. I'll take a deep dive into the past, present, and future of data science with Hilary. We'll discuss whether data science will even exist in its current form in ten years or if it will go the way of the webmaster, as Hillary puts it. Along the way, we'll delve into the ethics of machine learning, the challenges of AI automation, and the role of humanity and empathy in data science.

The Challenges Facing the Data Science Community

Hillary also makes clear that the challenges facing the community are large and include imprecise ethics, no standards of practice, and a lack of consistent vocabulary. These are all running themes in our conversations, highlighting the need for ongoing discussion and exploration within the data science community.

Next Episode: Chris Velinski, Assistant Vice President for Big Data Research at AT&T Labs

I'll then have Chris Velinski on the show. Chris is assistant vice president for big data research at AT&T Labs and a member of the seven-person team that won the $1 million Netflix prize, an open competition for improving Netflix's online recommendation system. We'll discuss the role data science plays in the modern telecommunications network landscape, how it helps a company that services over 140 million customers on mobile, and what statistical and data scientific techniques his team uses to work with such large amounts of data.

The Role of Data Science in Online Advertising

Following Chris's episode, I'll speak with Claudia Polish, chief scientist at Distillery. We'll discuss the role of data science in the online advertising world, including the predictability of humans and online bots. Our conversation will explore how data science can help companies better understand their audience and create more effective ad campaigns.

Future Episodes: Ben's Cranker, Data Scientist at Convoy; Morelle Salmon, Data Scientist at [Company]; Dave Robinson, Citizen Data Science

The following episodes will include interviews with Ben's Cranker, data scientist at convoy, dedicated to revolutionizing the North American trucking industry with data science. We'll also speak with Morelle Salmon about the role of data science in epidemiology and public health. Then, I'll join forces with Dave Robinson to discuss citizen data science and a future in which data literacy is a skill possessed by everybody.

Will Data Science Be a Practice for Everyone?

Dave specifically tackles the question of whether data science is a practice we can all take part in or a skill reserved for the few. This conversation will explore the potential for democratizing access to data science and making it more accessible to everyone, not just those with technical expertise.

Brief Segments: Tales from Open Source, Data Science Blog Post of the Week, and Stack Overflow Diaries

The mission of these segments is to explain and discuss in brief topics essential to any working data scientist's toolbox. We'll share stories from open-source projects, highlight recent blog posts on data science trends, and provide insights into common challenges faced by data scientists through our Q&A section.
