The Reliability and Maintenance of Luxury Cars: A Personal Experience with the Phantom
As I sat in the passenger seat of my friend's car, a Rolls-Royce Phantom, I couldn't help but notice the attention to detail that had gone into its design and maintenance. The owner, who I'll refer to as "Dad," had been the previous owner of this particular Phantom, and he had shared with me his experiences with the car over the years.
One of the most significant issues Dad had faced was with the fuel pumps, which had failed at one point. However, thanks to a good agreement with the dealer, they were able to replace them without much hassle. Dad had also replaced the tires, which had cost around $12,000. Despite these expenses, Dad had decided to keep the car's originality as much intact as possible, and he had chosen not to upgrade the wheels.
Dad mentioned that one of the unique features of this Phantom was its similarity to the Lamborghini Veyron in terms of tire replacement. Unlike most cars, which require new tires every 10 years, the Veyron uses a similar system to remove and replace them, but only because it's no longer in production. Dad had joked that if you see a Phantom with cheap-looking rims on it, it might be because the owner couldn't afford to get the correct wheels or has a questionable taste.
As we exited the car, I was struck by its size and elegance. Despite being one of the largest cars on the road, it still managed to exude a sense of symmetry and simplicity that is characteristic of Rolls-Royce designs. Dad mentioned that this aspect of Rolls-Royce's design philosophy was one of his favorite things about the brand. He also noted that this attention to detail meant that even an older model like this Phantom would remain relevant, with modern features and technology being added over time.
One of the most interesting aspects of owning a Rolls-Royce is the cost of insurance. Dad mentioned that it could be quite expensive once the car is used again, but he believed that the benefits of owning such a luxury vehicle outweighed the costs. He also joked about how his realtor friends might try to convince him to sell the car for a profit, only to ignore the tire bills that come with owning such an exclusive vehicle.
As we parted ways and I got into my own car, I couldn't help but feel a sense of envy towards Dad's luxurious ride. The Phantom was truly a one-of-a-kind experience, and I knew that I would never forget the time I spent in it. As I drove away, I caught a glimpse of the Phantom in the rearview mirror, its sleek design and elegant lines a testament to the craftsmanship and attention to detail that Rolls-Royce is known for.
The next day, Dad invited me back over to take a look at his collection, which included another rare and exotic car. As we walked through the driveway, I couldn't help but feel like I was stepping into a different world, one where luxury and exclusivity were the only currencies that mattered. And as we settled in for a day of browsing and admiring the cars, I knew that this was what it meant to truly live "Luxury Lives On."
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enmorning kids this is going to be a fun one I can't believe it's been 13 years since this car came out and I've never done a video with a phantom and this is Dylan yeah Dylan is a youtuber actually it's channels amongst many in the description luxury lives on so the 2004 rolls-royce phantom first year of the Phantom I believe yeah actually I think it was might have been Oh three or oh four and I'm not quite sure so for C olds I can remember it's the BMW v12 did they ever actually quote a power figure I thought they just said like sufficient maybe I have I've done my research 531 pound-feet of torque and 453 horsepower that sounds right and I like that there's no tach there's only a power reserve gauge yeah to show you how much of that horsepower you're not using at any given - exactly these cars are great because the Phantom is not changed very much from oh four until even now it's really just the MMI system yeah I think yeah and I think the great part about getting you know any of these cars now like even the Bentley's is they all look the same and you're kind of getting the same kind or get incredibly same thing what's let's have a drive and see if it feels new more wafting so let's go for a sale I think the rolls-royce phantom is more like a yacht than it is like a car and by the way we do have to do a launch and I know that's a little you know you know all that low gear right okay we'll do that in the back so I'll start up front then you can drive me and we'll do a rear seat okay some of the things I loved by the Phantom ride quality it is the best that there is period 102 seating position and the fact that so you know those sports steering wheels have those little thumb grips at the nine and three position the Phantom has them at four and eight you just must be lazy or action eventually you're supposed to drive it underhand which is gangster as can be the view out of the bonnet is the best that there is and this car suffered some of the most comical depreciation from new to now 100% no feds still initiation percent do you know this you can buy an early phantom 4 it's still not cheap mind you but Chris Harris just bought at no for phantom with 70,000 miles on it for like 70 grand that's insane and and you know what I think a big part of it is and I think this is it's kind of carried on onto this newer car but obviously when you have the older Rolls Royces they were just nightmares to maintain and that is what scared the market I think this car is hasn't been really terrible to maintain obviously part you're gonna be expensive it's expensive but it's not like a horror show like you shouldn't you should be afraid every time you drive it I think it's the greatest car I actually kind of agree with you I really do every time I Drive one it's magnificent it's not like oh I need to like go fast in this corner it's more just that like the experience of sailing one of these things down the road is so nice and it's so solid and it's like it's heavy but heavy is good it never it's never trying you don't have high expectations for its coronary in the first place no but it does it does better than you think now 100% like if I just burn it off it's got a pretty good we're going pretty good through there I'll being a phantom you know I thought it was pretty funny because I asked you earlier Mike has anyone ever brought a phantom on before night I think my hypothesis is either they don't want to or either the owners haven't heard of YouTube yet that's fraud that's my hypothesis is dry you're the only crossover between phantom and UTM and I want to just state that I'm not cleaning this to be my car at all this is my dad's car but if you if your dad and a phantom you would steal it you steal it - I'm with you your car's the other one right yeah yeah I got it we brought he brought two but we'll stick to this we'll talk about that in a minute so this thing is purple it's purple fan this is a straight purple phantom and was this paid to sample purple so yeah we we normally we forgot our pimp costume today know what what it was the story behind it is it's the hundredth anniversary edition so in 2004 we had hundred years of rolls-royce and 435 cars they used this purple color I think the Spirit of Ecstasy was silver like sterling silver for the first time but uh the center caps were finally painted and then you have the red badges which are indicative of like green I think 1920s Rolls Royces that had red badges okay what the client said in like the 1920s is I think they said the red was too crude so they put black on and so for to avoid that crudest they paid at the anniversary cars purple exactly yes precisely okay so as your dad had this thing since snoop no he hasn't okay took advantage of depreciation not as well as as Chris did but it was yeah I was it was pretty pretty pretty good deal and we thought it would be a good you know buy just because it's obviously a special fan of dude these are I think the Oh for 206 Phantom just really like the sweet spot I mean you want to get a good way you don't want to beat one but like so this one is 47,000 miles on it it seems to be an overall very nice condition the paint looks great the leather looks good shape its there's certainly no squeaks or rattles to be to be found we got it with 5,000 miles oh really oh and a daily drove it oh cool yeah that's big a great daily so you know we use our cars so oh wait no you were gonna drive me I know you were gonna drive I'm your chauffeur for the game stop here for a second and I'm hopping in back but I need to see your wallet so you can tip me well yeah so you're gonna be calling me James for the doors all right so you said that there is a launch mode and I would like to feel it's from back here yes there is you go in so basically what I was telling Matt is it starts in second gear if you hit low it puts it in first gear and it basically it starts in second so it's a lot quieter and I guess more polite well it's not so much torquing extra shift would be uncouth oh one percent so we can do it you know good back here I love it yeah just do it on tarmac burn it we're on dirt right now I love being in the back of this car all right do it okay you guys ready I'm ready build the revs hey not bad the problem is I let the tire spend too much to the traction came back out it's probably that that's very very wrong like I'm just gonna lounge back here though this is good Rolls Royce it's about these squishy carpets my feet are relaxed right now we've got wood and tray tables back here which some say are for getting work done but they are smooth to the level that you might want to run credit cards against I'm just saying the funny thing is you can feel there's still a little bit stiff to take out you know when we've got never been taken out exactly so the owner of this car he got it like obviously new and put no miles on it he said he was scared to drive it so when we got the car nothing could work like the come out everything was stuck and it's not a you know brand new cars yeah yeah yeah oh it's terrible so wait so in the however many years and 42,000 miles that you and your dad and put on this car yeah has it been a reliable good quality car or has it been a pain in the ass you know it has been um I I think the fuel pumps did go at one point and those are expensive stream lis but we we had some agreement with the dealer and they helped us out with it so when terrible and other than that I've tried the tires are about like 12 grand but yeah nothing you know no so you brought this up earlier that the it's similar to a Veyron is you don't have to send the wheels back to England and the Veyron they have to send the wheels back to France again do you just mean that they don't they're not in regular production okay is how you mean so the similarity between this and the Veyron in terms of the tires is these are the only two cars I believe that use the same system to remove them okay yeah that's that seems extremely annoying it is extremely annoying but you know what we you know we had to decide you know should we put new wheels on it what do we do and we just want to keep the cars original as impossible you know as possible and considering how cost-effective it's been and obviously they're going to as you said start circulating tires probably because they just stopped these riders at a certain point they just they have to serve this existing customer by making rounds of tires it's a similar thing where you have the Lamborghini Countach Pirelli will stamp tires about every 10 years and you got to buy up whether you need them or not this will probably be like that you know we're crossing our fingers yeah well if you see a phantom with some cheap looking rims on it and like you know twenty fours you know you may want to consider the fact that the person who owned that car could not actually afford to get the correct tires put on the correct wheels or they have a really bad taste yeah it's very possible I would say those are perfectly possible things con this car from the back is so good and this isn't even the extended wheelbase this is the regular wheelbase one and I'm six-three and I am just lounge and as can be back here and you know what I like about the the rear there cuz you see a lot of phantoms that rock yes it was a bit scary we're going off-road but you know a lot of phantoms you give them a BA you have like the TV screens you've all the crap you know I'm going with that is it dates and rolls royces are all about symmetry and simplicity you know all the buttons are aligned you said symmetry but I really for a second thought you said cemetery and I was like wow that's really mean well yours are quite old but no you haven't you have a completely valid point the fact that rolls-royce didn't fill this thing with screens and titles one I guess guys do have the Genki old I Drive screen like the fact that they haven't covered the dash and things that will quickly date the car means that you can buy whether you buy an O four and O eight or even 11 or 12 or even like a 14 or 15 what you get is fundamentally the same but yeah it's comments still relevant which is really cool and that's why I suggest buying the older ones because you just you can save a lot of money and you can have a car that like it's just like when you rolled up this is the dopest thing ever even even as a no for this is the dopest thing ever it has presents regardless there's no timeless so good the wood is all super nice and I wonder is this it are these things crazy expensive to insure once they're used again this is daddy's car I'm really sure see I get all the benefits I get this realtor I want to bring it to people like me and then you get to ignore the tire bills you know I think it is quite quite expensive I'm sure but it's been an overall great car and you know considering obviously we didn't have space 600,000 I think we will cut our losses yeah no no this is beautiful Wow all right phantom we finally did one forgot my chauffeur oh no thanks no this was super cool man I appreciate that is the first time I've ever actually got in the back more days do you very much much driving you know that well so now we're gonna hop out of Daddy's car and hop into your car this is very interesting as well and we're gonna see you tomorrow for that on this one time all right check out the video description for his YouTube channel it's there I promise luxury lives on luxury
