Debunking Fire reveal cakes, colour blind glasses & 5 minute crafts

Welcome to How To Cook That: Debunking the Unbelievable

I'm Ann Reardon and in this episode of debunking, we're going to look at some incredible claims that have been circulating online. But before we dive into the world of color blind glasses, fire reveal cakes, and more, let's take a look at a new channel that was sent into me by Wiggy Wam Wam.

This channel only started in 2022 and has already gained an astonishing half a billion views on YouTube and even more on Facebook. That's a lot of content! The videos that caught my attention are the ones that start with "Ex 5 minute Crafters React to..." and, after some research, I can verify that they are indeed ex-5 minute crafters because they seem to know everybody in the videos.

I've seen them around, oh yeah, I know this girl, oh yeah, I know that guy - it's like a big family reunion! And one of them even appears in the videos they're reacting to. Is that you... no way, it's a doppelganger... it's Farchie. Archie's cousin. What are you doing there? What are you doing it's University this is like the Multiverse.

Now, if you're hoping for some behind-the-scenes information and insights, then you're going to be disappointed because the majority of the reactions can be summed up in a few simple phrases: "that's really good," "look at that," "wow, that's cool." It seems like the vast majority of comments are positive, but on rare occasions someone does say something negative. And when that happens, it seems to be quickly covered over with a positive comment.

For example, one commenter said, "It feels really heavy and look at that stitching - it's awful." But then they added, "Good job, good job guys." Good grief! It's like the comments are trying to cancel each other out. And don't even get me started on when they're testing 5-minute craft hacks. Oh here we go, so it's time to test it ready? Yeah, it's looking a bit not that perfect honestly but it definitely works.

I have to say, I'm impressed by the sheer quantity of content this channel is producing, but I'm also concerned about the lack of transparency and accountability in their reactions. It feels like they're more interested in creating a buzz than actually providing genuine insights or feedback. And when they do say something negative, it's quickly swept under the rug with a pat on the back and a "good job."

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enWelcome to How To Cook That I'm Ann Reardon and in this episode of debunking we're going to look at  color blind glasses, fire reveal cakes and more! But first let's start with a new channel that was  sent into me by Wiggy Wam Wam. This channel only started in 2022 and already has nearly  half a billion views on YouTube and even more on Facebook! It uploads on average 33 videos a  week that is a lot of content. Now the videos that caught my attention are the ones that called ex 5  minute Crafters React to ... and I can verify that they are ex 5 minute Crafters because they seem to  know everybody in the videos. I know this guy I've seen them around oh I know this girl oh yeah yeah  I know that guy I know yeah I know all of these people and one of them even appears in the videos  they're reacting to. Is that you ... no way, it's a doppleganger ... it's Farchie. Archie's cousin.  What are you doing there what are you doing it's University this is like the Multiverse. Now if  you hoping for some behind the scenes information and insights then you're going to be disappointed  because the majority of the reactions can be summed up like this: that's really good look at  that awesome all right get the fan get my plastic bag wait what are they doing and now she feel.  Oh refreshing oh yeah that that looks amazing that is so cool. That's cool. Woah that's cool  that's nice. nice. That's so good and I bet the water around it is cooling the pool as yeah it's  genius. You get the picture the vast majority of the comments are good and positive but on the rare  occasion someone does say something negative it seems to be quickly covered over with a positive.  It feels really heavy and look at that stitching it's awful. But good job, good job guys. Good job  good job. Oh to Sharp I don't know if that works I don't know I think it is really yeah it works. And  the same thing is true if they're testing the 5 minute craft hacks ... oh here we go so it's time  to test it ready yeah it's looking a bit not that perfect honestly but it definitely works. That  hole in their container was so much smaller than the one that was shown in the original hack and  it still didn't work very well but just yelling \"it works\" over the top is a great way to cover  that up ... sort of? Given that they're ex five minute crafters I was hoping for them to expose  fake hacks and have a bit more of a \"why I left BuzzFeed type of vibe\" but that's not the case.  Now Dave did a bit more digging and he found this article on Facebook ... Archie 5 grows with Reels.  The soul publishing launched their Channel Archie 5 both on Facebook and Instagram in January 2022.  Just in case you are not familiar with the soul publishing they are the Russian company based  in Cyprus that runs the channel 5 minute crafts 🧐 So they have a reaction channel reacting to their  own videos so while technically yes they are ex 5 Minute Crafters they still work for the company  that produces 5 minute crafts which explains why it is very overly positive in all of their  reviews. I did happen to find a couple of comments that snuck through the editor's check. The shoe is  it, I don't know there we go see wow okay cool. Looks fake though. It's going to make the color  change again I don't think that works we need to try it. I think JoJo tried this one but I I don't  think it worked that well. Yeah oh that's smart that's nice device good straining it's going on  yeah on her hand though always have a trouble with it so as long as it doesn't fall out it's  fine if it gives you third degree burns. What what no no no no false false information false  advertising. Ah there we go that's cool dangerous very dangerous yeah it's dangerous processed  cheese cuz there's no other cheese that's best to process cheese. After all agreeing the hack was  dangerous just randomly yell processed cheese as a segue to get out of an awkward situation.  So they don't just have this channel they've also launched another reaction channel with an animated  character down the bottom of their 123Go videos so now by launching these reaction channels they can  upload all of their wonderful content all over again. Next Nurma sent in this video wanting to  know if the new fire cake trend is safe or not. Basically you have two images and you burn away  the top one to reveal what's underneath there are two ways of achieving this effect and the first  is using wafer paper wafer paper is edible but it burns really slowly so any videos you've seen  using wafer paper have no doubt been sped up to make it look more impressive. Wafer paper this is  going to be the image that burns away the wafer paper is what's going to make it burn just like  that. I like the way Sharon from Sparkle Cakery showed this in real time. Burnaway cakes actually  take a few seconds to burn so I have some example videos to show you how long it actually takes and  the speeds I have them at I hope this video was helpful for you cuz I think this is a really fun  trend you can get amazingly creative with this technique see you next time. The other problem  with wafer paper is as it burns you're going to be left with little bits of black that fall onto the  cake which is especially noticeable if the image underneath is pale in color. The other thing to  be wary of if you don't make the gap between the two images big enough with icing then it  burns so slowly that it's also going to set the bottom image on fire. Now you can get around that  problem by making the bottom image out of fondant instead of out of wafer paper so it doesn't set  alight quite so so easily but the next issue is that all of that icing around the top edge has a  distinctly burnt flavor and you need to scrape it off so then the whole cake doesn't look very nice.  So in other words this is really good for Tik Tok in fast forward not so good in real life to give  to people. Now because of that some people have started using flash paper that magicians use it  burns fast and then just disappears into nothing but as you know from science nothing actually  disappears into nothing, something else has to be formed in this case it forms a little bit of  steam and three odorless, colorless gases carbon dioxide carbon monoxide and nitrogen which in such  small amounts would be fine on a cake. Now if I burn flash paper next to some of the wafer paper  you can see the difference in the speed that they burn the flash paper gives the showmanship the wow  the big reveal but the wafer paper is so slow that it's only useful if you fast forward if I make a  cake that has the top image out of flash paper and then I set that alight you'll see it burns quickly  it burns impressively and it burns clean there's no little bits on the cake that you can see at  all which is great but then when I go to cut the cake now you can see all the way around there is  a ring of flash paper left anywhere where it was damp from the icing it just won't burn so then you  have to take all of that icing off and yes it all still has a weird burnt flavor so just like the  wafer paper you have to remove it from the cake. So I think I prefer what this cake decorator is  doing and using flash paper off the actual cake and now that just leaves us with the question of  fire safety. Most birthday cakes do already have candles on them which in themselves can be a risk.Okay let's run some tests with flash paper and see if it's any more dangerous than a candle.  If I dangle some paper over the burning flash paper it does get slightly singed but it was so  quick that it didn't get set alight now let's try another one where we hold the paper the  other way again it's singed but it's not on fire. But if the paper does get too close to  the flames it will set alight just the same as if you put paper right above a candle. I  guess my caution here would be that most people are used to candles and they know how close you  can get to it before it's going to be an issue whereas flash paper can be quite unpredictable.  The drier it is the faster it burns if it's slightly damp it'll burn more slowly and the  more of it that you have the hotter and bigger that flame is going to be. If I fold some up  so I can show you that and then set that Al light the flame goes much higher and hotter  and it easily sets set that paper on fire even though it only touched it for a second. So cake  decorators do not get overly confident in your use of flash paper if you use too much you would want  to make sure that your bride and your groom and anything flammable are nowhere near that cake. I  imagine most wedding venues would not allow you to have something that was going to set on fire  like that for obvious reasons. Now moving on to Color Blind glasses are they a scam or do  they actually work you've no doubt seen many vide of people trying them on and seeing color for the  first time. It is the amazing technology that is allowing the color blind to see what they've never  been able to see before we finally got the right glasses to help him see color for the first time.I can't believe I've went through my whole life without seeing this beautiful. It works? I can't I can't believe I've been missing all these colors. This is unbelievable. This is unbelievable.Recently there have been some videos saying that  the color blind glasses are a scam and that they do not work at all and that all of the reaction  videos are fake. Now certainly some of the videos definitely do seem to be fake take a look at this  one ... green okay yellow yep yellow wait no that one's red that one's yellow that one's  blue that one's orange that one's purple yeah okay now put your glasses on and tell me the  colors again that's purple blue red purple green orange and yellow. First time through he got some  of the colors wrong and then with the glasses on he got them all right but if you zoom in you  can see the colors written on the balloons and then there was this interview with Logan Paul:  I've never said this this was like four years ago I say I'll say it now I put on the glasses  for the first time and by the way was really expecting something to happen like cuz I am  red green color blind I put on these glasses bro no change. I didn't know that I didn't know  that. The guy was zero like maybe the sky was a little little like lighter shade of blue and  I had a moment in my mind I was like we're at the Getty museum. What do I just I have to fake this.  I put my acting chops to work. So what about the before and after footage they showed of the sunset  that he was seeing? I did zero science research I just I just decreased the saturation in one shot  I get the footage I have to make a video and I have to make it dramatic and so I edit it and  don't care about the truth. Don't care about the truth! That video has had 30 million views and  it's total lies and total misinformation about color blindness. So are all the reactions fake  was everybody lying? Well certainly some stand by their response. When I wear these glasses colors  pop out like the normally that I can't usually see that's why it was kind of quite shocking for  me and how can you say my experience what I saw is a lie and I'm a scammer. So what's the truth? What  do color blind people actually see if they look through these glasses? Well to understand that you  need to know what color blind people see when they are not wearing the glasses. Normal color vision  requires three different receptors or three cones in the eyes one of them detects short wavelengths  or bluish tones the next one detects wavelengths in the middle or the greeny colors and the other  one detects longer wavelengths which pick up the Reds. There are not receptors for each of the  millions of different colors that we can see there are only the three receptors and then depending on  the signal strength you get on each one of those receptors your brain then works out what color you  are currently seeing. Now if instead of having all three of those cones working properly one of them  is not working very well or it's not working at all then now instead of getting a signal that's  clear for each color this signal could be the same for green as it would be for orange. So now what  are you seeing? Well if you kind of muddle those two colors together you get this muddy looking  color. There are of course different types of color blindness depending on which of those  cones is affected and to what level it is still working. Now I want you to imagine that you have  spent your whole life even as a little kid with people telling you that this is green red blue  yellow but instead of it looking like this it looks like this. Now if you're not color blind  you'd probably have a very hard time being able to identify those different colors for me but people  who are color blind have been doing this for their whole life and they are amazingly good at  it. They notice just the tiniest of differences in colors that to me look identical and can tell them  apart. A good way of telling colors apart from me is that even if two colors might look the same if  they're like flat you know just two paint strokes next to each other if you then got a glob of the  paint and just did like a thick thing so that you can see the shadows move over it and the light  move over it different colors especially purples and blues it's sort of the only way I can tell  them apart is that they'll get darker purples get darker much quicker in different lights,  whereas the blue will sort of maintain a bit lighter even under low light conditions. I've  put some pictures through a color blind filter so I can put the normal one and the color blind  one side by side and ask James to describe the differences for us so that you can get an idea of  what it is that he is seeing. First glance they look the same second glance they look the same.Um this little inner section is lighter.Like I'm trying to compare things and like  these raspberries look the exact same these look like the same color the mint looks the same color. When I look closer this this raspberry here could be like not red might be green  or brown whereas that one's definitely red.First glance first again the same like they're  all the same at first glance like I've got to start isolating sections of it and then  directly comparing back and forth to notice any difference. Um which is even hard in this one.First glance? Uh at first glance they look the same um looking more closely this a bit darker  but they're still the same color it's just darker and this is lighter than that one but  again still the same color like got red yellow green but a brighter red and a darker green. The wood color is what stands out the most as being different this is quite orangey warm  wood like and this is just not as warm more like regular wood brown I don't know nothing are super  standing out all right and can you tell me what colors they are um like orange or red blue yellow  yellow orange a dark green like a forest green um pink I'm guessing that one I'm not I think it's  pink yeah um lighter green purple a either a very light it's either an orange or very light green  blue a red yellow or orange and purple or blue. I think color blind people are amazing towards the  end of World War II they actually noticed that people who are color blind were much better at  spotting the enemy in camouflage than people with normal color vision. If you spend your whole life  looking and everything is always camouflaged like if all trees and the ground look the same they're  all just different shades of brown then you've got to differentiate not by the color but by the  actual object and the size of it and the shape of it and the way that it's moving and uh the  way it plays with the light and so when you see you know more brown moving along your brain's not  automatically going green green its part of the tree like you're not grouping it automatically  you're sorting through it by what it actually looks like. So hopefully you can see from that  that if someone who is color blind says something is red they're not necessarily seeing the color  red that you see if you're not color blind they're seeing what they have learned is red and they are  amazing so amazing at spotting those little differences. If I ask James to sort these dots  of different color into groups of colors he can do that relatively well with the exception of a  few dots that look identical to him and they're the ones that get used in the Ishihara tests or  the color blind do tests. According to Enchrome's website James's color blindness is strong Deutan and  they have eyewear to help him see Life In Bright vibrant color. I also did the color blind test on  their website and came up as having normal color vision but apparently their outdoor Deutan lenses  can boost my color perception even more now that's a strange claim how can you possibly  boost my color perception when I can already see all of the colors normally. Hmm. According  to Enchroma their glasses work by removing small slices of light from in the visible light Spectra  this then corrects the ratios entering the eye and the correct colors can then be seen  and perceived filters that take out specific wavelengths otherwise known as Optical Notch  filters have been around for a long time and used in all sorts of other applications but  I've got some of Enchroma's glasses the ones they said were right for James and have asked  him to tell us what difference he can see between the two pictures with the glasseson. Mmm not really the main thing that's standing out to me is still this one. Maybe the source  looks like more brown like a little less red like I can tell the difference between them a bit more.  It's made that red of the sauce specifically more saturated but it was already red before red and  green and gray and all of it they're all sort of the same tone just at different ends of the the  Spectrum like both red and green to me they're just different shades of brown. Um I can I can  see some warmness like warm is something that I can pick up and that's like a warm shade of  brown becomes a red Green's really hard like it's like it could be green it could be something else  but it's just shifting the tones of the color that's there it's making some stuff that did  look similar not similar but nothing that I see is something that I couldn't have seen before  yeah so it actually is clearer for some of them and I don't know if that's because it's taking  out it's filtering out some of the the whiteness that's in it or if anybody can explain how these  work in the comments or anywhere online to me I would be very grateful um probably the best  way for us to actually picture exactly what the glass is doing which I haven't seen anyone else  do is to get a prism and take this out in the sunlight so that we can separate out all the  colors in the visible spectrum. Now we can see a full rainbow and if I add the glasses they are  dark so I'm going to need to increase the exposure now to my eyes this looked like it decreased the  range of colors it looked more like just bands of color instead of the slow merging between  them but let me take a photo of both of them and so we can actually look at them in detail side  by side wow it's really blowing out the Red Band so there's a lot more red orange and yellow are  still there but green is expanded to cover the light blue what's the most surprising color for  you to like experience for the first time The sky. And there's no indigo it's just gone straight  to violet so it's effectively just blocking out certain wavelengths all together and making more  things look red so what does that look like to someone who is color blind. James tells me that  Rainbows are very unimpressive why do people keep pointing them out they're just a band of  yellow and dark blue in the sky so let's put this rainbow that the glasses see through the color  blind filter and sadly it's the same and this is consistent with an independent study that was done  in 2018 with 48 people who are colorblind and they found and I quote a colorblind person using the enchroma  glasses will not perceive new colors but we rather see the same colors in a different way  this makes it possible for some individuals using these glasses to distinguish some colors but to  the detriment of others which will now be confused. Think that's a red yeah that's a red mhm is that  red? Yep. Is that one red yeah those two aren't no that's like purple those two aren't red uh  that's green that's green that's green I think that's green the bottom row are all Browns.  Now the glasses company say they never claimed that it would cure color blindness or that it would allow  you to see new color but certainly the imagery on their website seems to imply that you will be able  to see colors that you haven't seen before. Well I hope that that clears things up with thanks to my  amazing patrons for your support that allows me to do videos like this if you enjoyed this video make  sure you like comment share subscribe and also let me know other things you would like to see  investigated or debunked make it a great week by being kind to others and I'll see you on Friday 😊\n"
