The Real Deal: Windows 11 is Here to Stay
There's no need for an intro today as the first story is so big, it's kind of an intro in and of itself. Apparently, Windows 11 is a real thing and not just a fever dream that we all collectively experienced while baking in this crazy heat wave. You know what I mean? - I do. - I feel like a French fry in this weather. - You kinda look like one.
This sentiment seems to be shared by the host, who can't help but poke fun at the current weather conditions. However, it's time to shift gears and talk about the actual news. It turns out that the leaked version of Windows 11 is legit, which means that this new operating system brings a whole new ball game.
Windows 11 boasts a sleek new glassy-looking UI, improvements to touch, multitasking, and separate desktop environments. This is no surprise, as Microsoft has been teasing these features for quite some time now. But it's great to see them finally becoming a reality. Additionally, Teams will be built right into the OS, which should make collaboration easier than ever.
Another exciting feature that gamers can look forward to is Xbox Game Pass integration and support for autoHDR and direct storage. This means that games will be prettier and faster, kind of like a model that just had an energy drink (Linus glugging). You like that one? - It's a dumb joke. But seriously, this is going to make gaming on Windows 11 an even more enjoyable experience.
But wait, there's more! Android apps will be available in the Microsoft Store through an Amazon App Store integration. This might not be as exciting for everyone, but it's still a nice touch. And let's not forget about sideloading, which is going to be a thing. Awesomer!
Now, the bigger thing that needs to be discussed is how the Microsoft Store will allow developers to keep 100% of their revenue if they use third-party commerce engines. However, there's a catch - this only applies to non-games apps. For some reason, games are exempt from this rule. But don't worry, Microsoft also wants Steam and the Epic Games Store to be in the Microsoft Store. Confused? It's okay.
But before we move on, let's talk about Windows 11's TPM module requirement. This is where things get a bit confusing. Microsoft didn't mention it at all in their presentation, which has led to people scalping chips that most people won't need. The TPM (Trusted Platform Module) module is required for Windows 11, but it seems like Microsoft forgot to include this information in their initial announcement.
The good news is that most modern PCs will have no trouble upgrading to Windows 11 for free. However, custom-built desktop users and IT admins might have to enable the TPM setting in the BIOS. It's a bit more complicated than just plugging in a USB drive, but we'll get into that later.
As Linus Tech Tips would say, "what do you think this is?" Indeed, Windows 11 does seem like a whole new ball game. And now that it's finally here, let's dive deeper and explore what this new operating system has to offer.
Let's take a closer look at Western Digital's latest product line.
