How to Build a Miniature Golf Course _ This Old House

Building a Miniature Golf Course: A Step-by-Step Guide

Building a miniature golf course is a fun and creative project that can be done with a series of panels, MDF boards, and some basic tools. In this article, we'll follow along with the creators as they build their own miniature golf course from scratch.

Getting Started

The first step in building our miniature golf course is to cover it with green felt to make it look like grass. This will be the foundation of our game, so let's get started! The creators begin by covering the floor with a large sheet of felt, creating a smooth and even surface for their panels.

Preparing the Panels

The next step is to prepare the panels that will make up our course. These panels are made of MDF boards, which are cut to size using a miter box. The creators start with a 36-inch panel, but they need to cut it down to fit the space perfectly. They use a saw to cut the panel to size, taking care to follow the lines carefully.

Adding Stair Balls

To add some visual interest to our course, the creators decide to add stair balls around the perimeter of each panel. These stair balls are made from fur-covered wood and are used to create a fun and challenging obstacle for players. The creators use these stair balls to cover up any gaps or edges on their panels.

Gluing the Stair Balls

Once the stair balls are in place, the creators need to glue them down using a fast-setting adhesive. They apply a small amount of glue to each stair ball and press it firmly onto the panel, making sure it's secure and even.

Marking the Hole

Next, the creators need to mark the hole that will be used for each piece of equipment in their course. This involves carefully marking the center of each panel with a pencil or marker, ensuring that the hole is straight and true.

Drilling the Hole

With the hole marked, it's time to drill it into the panel using a hole saw. The creators use this tool to create a precise hole that will accommodate their equipment. They take care to follow the lines carefully and avoid cutting themselves.

Finishing Touches

Once the hole is drilled, the creators need to add some finishing touches to each piece of equipment. This involves gluing the felt to the MDF board using an adhesive, making sure it's secure and even. The creators also use a fast-setting glue to attach any additional components, such as ramps or obstacles.

Adding Ramps and Obstacles

To make their course more challenging and interesting, the creators decide to add some ramps and obstacles. They cut two five-gallon buckets in half and loop them together using wire, creating a fun and challenging obstacle for players. The ramp is built using PVC elbows, which are attached to the sides of the bucket.

Final Assembly

With all the pieces of equipment complete, it's time to assemble the course. The creators carefully place each piece into its designated hole, making sure everything is secure and even. They use a fast-setting adhesive to attach any additional components, such as ramps or obstacles.

Conclusion

Building a miniature golf course is a fun and creative project that requires some basic tools and materials. By following these steps, you can create your own unique and challenging course that will provide hours of entertainment for you and your friends. Remember to always follow safety guidelines and use caution when handling sharp objects and power tools. Happy building!

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enall right guys this is going to be fun we're actually going to build a miniature golf course you got it in it's a really cool system it's a series of panels you can set up any way you want to to build your own Golf Course inside the house we're covering it with green felt to make it look like grass absolutely and this is one of the panels we're going to build today this is the most important panel I would say because it's what every golfer Shoots for the whole that's right Richard these panels are actually made of MDF now what we want to do is we want to get get these sheets up off the floor slightly so what I'm going to do is I'm going to use these pieces of wood right here that are are stair balls or deck balls and they're made of fur we're going to put them around the perimeter of the MDF just like that to do that we're going to start with a 36 in piece now the panel's 48 so we have to cut a piece to go up the difference all right ju so that you cut the ballister Square we're going to clamp it in this miter box right here and you're going to run the saw right into this slot let me line up the line with the slot and you can cut away beautiful good there's one all right Peter now we're ready to glue the fur to the panel I'm going to show you what I want you to do little strip of glue like that okay I want to create a space and another strip of glue bring it right down space another strip all right that's great now what we're going to use is a fast setting glue this will set up in about two two seconds all right what I'm going to do is I want to put a little dab right here and I want you to put a little dab in between each space that you created now I'm going to spray some accelerant on those dots what's that do that'll speed up the dry time of the glue now I got to flip it over make it even push down and count to five one two three four five okay ready master I'm going to activate it now Kaye did a good job finding the center of the board to Mark the position for our hole and Alberto is going to drill the hole for us all right let's Slide the board down he's got a hole saw hold it up all right hold that can you guys flip the sheet right over we'll finish the cut from this side there you go Alberto go Beauty now what we have to do is glue the felt to the MDF I'm going to spray an adhesive on the MDF and then I'm also going to spray the felt I want to do nice even lines so we cover all of the fabric okay Kaye Masa grab the panel bring it over now what we want to do is we want to flip it over but don't touch the green flip it right over to me that's right okay now now what we have to do is Center it over the felt once we put it down we can't move it because this is contact man ready 1 2 3 let it down okay now I have to cut the corners out we all ready now we got one shot at this so everybody pull it up together all together pull it up and if it touches it's going to stick forever now pull pull and wrap it right on top of the Rails looks pretty good guys but if we're going to golf we need a hole right Tom that's right so we'll cut the middle out cutting like a pizza yep all right let's flip it over see how we did flip it over me doesn't that look like the Fairway no hey look at that pretty nice and the last piece is this Plumbing fitting that pops right in there I think it's time to grab our golf clubs to keep the ball on the green around the perimeter I'm actually using a composite ballister it's heavier than wood ball bounces off it nicely and you won't get any splinters we also built a ramp right here and underneath it you can see there's three PVC elbows depending on which hole you go into determines where your ball comes out now if you want to make a loopd like this you take two five gallon buckets you cut the bottom off of it and you Loop them together all right you guys ready to play some golf yeah all right give it a rideall right guys this is going to be fun we're actually
