HTC One E8 First Impressions & Hands On!

Introduction to the HTC E8 by Kevin, the Tech Ninja

The HTC E8 is a smartphone that has recently been released, and I'm excited to take you through my first impressions of this device. The first thing you notice when you get your hands on the HTC E8 is the material it's made of. It doesn't feel like normal plastic or soft touch plastic as seen on other devices like the Nexus 7. Instead, it uses a polycarbonate material that gives it a soft and smooth surface.

Comparison to Other Devices

I'm not going to do a full comparison between the E8 and its predecessor, the M8, here since I'll be doing a full video review of both devices later on. However, when compared to the M8, the E8 feels just as solid. The soft touch material allows you to seamlessly slide your finger from the back of the device to the screen without any type of change in surface, giving it an honest feel like one big smooth material. The device is two-tone, with the accent color on the back, and I have a model with gold accents that go around the lens, flash power button, and even the HTC logo.

Differences from Previous Devices

One notable difference between the E8 and other HTC devices is the location of the power button. It's located in the middle on the top of the device, whereas it was typically found at the bottom or on the right side. Additionally, the IR Blaster is quietly missing from this device. I'll be inclined to think that this was an attempt to keep the device at a lower price point. The headphone jack and charging port are also located on the bottom of the device.

Design and Build Quality

The front of the device looks similar to other HTC devices from recent years, with dual speakers and a front-facing camera on top. The SD card slot is located on the left side, while the volume rocker and dual SIM slots are found on the right side. Overall, the design and build quality of the E8 feel solid and premium.

Camera Capabilities

When it comes to cameras, HTC has moved away from its traditional ultra pixel dual cameras and opted for a more traditional 13 megapixel shooter on the back. While I'm not entirely convinced that this change improves picture quality, it's a nice start nonetheless. The rest of the specs remain the same as the M8, including 16 GB internal memory, 2 GB of RAM, the Snapdragon 801, and the Androidrino 330 GPU.

Display and Performance

The 5-inch screen has a 1080p resolution with a 441 PPI pixel density. As expected, the colors are very saturated, while the text is extremely crisp and detailed. The viewing angles allow you to see all the fine details. Software-wise, the device is running Android 4.4.2, and I'm using Blink Feed as my news and social aggregator. If you're not familiar with Blink Feed, it's a Flipboard-style app that brings in your latest news based on your interests and allows you to post to Facebook and Go+.

Performance and Gaming

In terms of performance, the E8 feels just like any other flagship device. There's minimal shutter lag between applications and games, and I was able to play Dead Trigger 2 with the highest graphic setting at maximum speed with minimal lag, thanks to the Androidrino 330 GPU. Overall, this phone should be able to go toe-to-toe with any other Android smartphone on the market.

Conclusion

The HTC E8 has finally arrived, offering a more affordable alternative to previous flagship devices like the M8. While some features have been tweaked or changed for the better, overall, I'm excited to dive deeper into this device and share my full review with you soon.
