Nokia 7.1 - Hands On Review

The Nokia 7.1: A Mid-Range Powerhouse with a Touch of Luxury

HMD is inching its way to the US market with yet another unlocked phone, and this time it's the Nokia 7.1. As a mid-range device, it's not as powerful as some of the other high-end phones on the market, but it's currently the most powerful phone from HMD available in the US. The design of the Nokia 7.1 is strictly Nokia-like, with a focus on clean lines and minimalism. One notable feature is the use of actual glass on the back, which adds a premium feel to the device.

The glass surface covers an impressive 85% of the phone's body, and it's made even more durable with toughened glass in the back and Gorilla Glass 3 on the front. The 5.8-inch full HD+ screen is also noteworthy, featuring a 19:9 aspect ratio that makes it easy to reach all corners without straining your eyes. The phone feels lightweight and compact, making it perfect for those who want a device that's both powerful and portable.

The metal build quality of the Nokia 7.1 is superb, with chamfered edges that add a touch of luxury to the design. The gloss steel color is particularly striking, and the copper accents add a nice pop of color to the device. Whether you choose the midnight blue or another color option, there's no denying that this phone looks and feels like a high-end device.

One feature that sets the Nokia 7.1 apart from other mid-range devices is its support for native HDR 10 content. This means that if you watch HDR content from apps like YouTube or Netflix, you'll get to enjoy the full range of colors and contrast that these shows have to offer. And because the phone can automatically convert standard definition videos to HDR, you don't need to worry about the technical specifications of your device.

Under the hood, the Nokia 7.1 is powered by the Snapdragon 636 processor, which provides plenty of power for most tasks. The phone comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, making it perfect for those who want a device that can handle their daily needs without breaking the bank. And because HMD has seen fit to include a microSD card slot, you can expand your storage capacity as needed.

The Android One interface is clean and simple to use, with no bloatware or unnecessary features getting in the way of your experience. The phone comes with three years of monthly security updates and two-year version updates, which means that you'll have access to the latest security patches and feature updates for a long time after you purchase the device.

Software-wise, there's not much new under the hood compared to other Android devices on the market. However, HMD has seen fit to include adaptive display, which adjusts the screen's color tones, brightness, and luminosity based on your environment and activities. This feature was introduced in Android Pi, but it's now available on the Nokia 7.1 as well.

The camera setup on the Nokia 7.1 is also noteworthy, with two cameras on the back that use Zeiss optics. The main camera features a 12-megapixel sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, while the secondary camera has a 5-megapixel depth sensor for added depth and detail. While we didn't get to test the camera extensively, it seems like it's capable of taking some great photos.

One feature that sets the Nokia 7.1 apart from other devices is its Bothie mode, which allows you to take photos with both front and rear cameras at the same time. This can be a fun way to capture moments from multiple angles, and the phone's dual-lens design makes it easy to switch between cameras on the fly. You can also use the camera first, then compose the second camera in post-processing, which adds an extra layer of creative control to your photos.

Finally, let's talk about battery life. The Nokia 7.1 has a 3060mAh battery inside, which should provide a full day's worth of use for most users. However, we didn't get to test the battery extensively, so it's hard to say exactly how long it'll last. But with USB-C fast charging on board, you can quickly top up your battery when you're on the go.

The Nokia 7.1 is available now in the US, priced at $349. Pre-orders start on October 5th, and the phone will begin shipping on October 28th. If you want to see it before you buy, you'll be able to pick one up starting November 4th at numerous Best Buy stores around the country.
