Fallout 4 - Automatron - Gameplay & Review

The First DLC to Fallout 4: A Review of Automatron

The first DLC to Fallout 4, Automatron, was released last week under Bethesda's newly raised season pass pricing, but it is also available individually for $10. As with most games, it can be considered a glorified professionally crafted mod that expands the game's play modestly but doesn't go too crazy. This expansion kit adds an evil villain, known only as the Mechanist, to the Commonwealth and sets up a few new dungeon environments littered with abandoned buildings, robots, Raiders, and other familiar elements.

The storyline accompanying Automatron is reasonably compelling if short, serving as a vessel for the introduction of new robot building mechanics for the post-DLC game world. After saving a caravan from robot onslaught and overthrowing the Mechanist, players are granted access to robot schematics for all of their favorite robots using appropriate perks and supplies. With these resources, they can craft robots that function as settlers or companions with varying abilities, deadliness, and weapons, including face lasers.

As with any Bethesda game, bugs are present throughout Automatron, particularly with regards to pathfinding issues with robot companions and problems where robots would blow their own arms off by using weapons too close to solid objects. However, these issues do not detract significantly from the overall experience. It is likely that modders will recreate this functionality in the future and make it available through free mods, which may offer alternative solutions or improvements.

Despite its familiarity, Automatron does add some variety to the game and offers an enjoyable, albeit brief, playthrough for a new type of dungeon. The larger edition of the DLC includes robot crafting, which provides a lot of options and further specialization for character development since companions are now also customizable. Overall, Automatron is a solid addition to the Fallout 4 game, making it worth getting for fans of Die Hard who want to see extra elements and possibly the accompanying side quest.

For casual players or those who prefer waiting until sales before purchasing DLCs, it would be suggested considering waiting until a sale. For now, there's a mod available on Nexus mods called "Robot Home Defense" that can help replicate some of Automatron's functionality without the need for the full DLC experience. The review was written by staffer Michael Kars and is published on the website; you can check out his work by following the link in the description below.
